Seton Hall (UBS), Sun., Feb. 18, 5p, FS-1

Honestly the more I sit on it these comments by Rick are so baffling

If he’s so aware of his roster’s deficiencies why does he continue to insist on us trying to pressure the ball and pick up full court?

You call out your players for being non athletic and slow but then continue to put them in a position where they need to scramble up and down the court defensively? That doesn’t make any sense.

He thinks his play style should win out when his personnel clearly doesn’t match… but then it’s all his players fault? Weak.

Worst part is that he’s the coach and he’s apparently immune to any of the criticism he so easily heaps on the guys he recruited. At least in the things he says after these games.

You are right about one thing and that thing has affected the other things you mentioned. His carelessness with ball has been his major flaw. Should he choose to play a more cerebral game, he has the athletic ability to play at this level.
He's got length and some athletic ability, I will give him that, but he's far from a natural athlete and he's not nearly as talented a basketball player as he thinks he is. And that's the real shame, since it's preventing him from being the best basketball player that he's capable of being.

He contradicts himself frequently

I don't understand the fact that Jenkins gets a pass from Pitino and everyone else gets criticized.
Although today he couldn't turn things around at the end of the game with forced shots, he's been the most consistent player while every single other player has regularly underperformed. Soriano and Dingle being on top of the list.

What SJU “needed” was a great coach who was motivated and ready to compete in the modern age of college basketball

Sad thing is I’m not sure we hired that anymore

But yea he definitely won the press conference, said the right things, but so did mullin. You gotta follow through
Definite frustrations this year but I'm not close to giving up on him yet. He may not be head and shoulders above everybody else X's and O's wise anymore but I think his statements about having to put together an entire roster in a matter of weeks is a legitimate gripe. Now he's had a full year to determine what/who to target in the portal and NIL shouldn't be an issue so there won't be any excuses if we're seeing similar results this time next season.

And he still got 5 points to (very briefly) give us the lead back.

Some things better left unsaid, seems self serving to me and wonder what recruits and their coaches, advisors and families think;

These posts coming from people defending what he said are even more baffling to me. This day and age, take that for what it’s worth, these kids (young adults) generally don’t respond well to this kind of stuff. It’s counterintuitive at best, insane at worst.

My first rant of the season:

I am not in favor of Rick trashing the players, but......

This team is painfully soft. I drove out to Long Island (from Jersey) to see a team completely quit in the 2nd half. The Seton Hall kids wanted that game and bullied our team into submission.

Joel, Taylor Jr., and Dingle are soft with very little heart. Joel can keep is monster dunks against DePaul if he's going to shrink in the big spot. And, Dingle barely has a pulse -nevermind any fight. Yeah....Luis Jr. is talented, but he looks like he's playing his own personal offense. Yeah....Dunlap is a good shooter, but he is so far in his own head that he can't even hit the side of a barn.

A least Jenkins, Ledlum and Zuby show some fight. Time to turn this roster over and bring in some alpha dogs. And....hey Rick.....Storr, Stanley, King and Jones all could have started on your "fresh start" roster.

While I am at it.....let me take a shot at St. John's fans. Absolute church mice! We outnumbered SH fans by a significant margin, yet we still sit there listening to "Let's go Pirates" chants drowning out the men's lacrosse team (who, aside from the cheerleaders, are the only group making any noise).

Finally......two hamburgers, fries, a popcorn and two waters cost me $71. I got screwed twice tonight and that's not "what she said".
You left out the cost of parking? 🤪

I’m not giving up on him yet either because I think he recruits a lot differently this offseason. But goddamn man if every loss there’s gonna be him complaining about either NIL or his own players then I start to question if he even really wants to do this.

And St. John’s has had a tough 25 years on the basketball court no denying that, but this program deserves a coach who’s going to give his all to this. It’ll be interesting to see if Rick intends to do that the more this job frustrates him

Should have kept Lavin
Well, I'm not sure how much he really wanted to stay, but I'm on record as not liking when we fired him. Should have been done either a year earlier, or he should have been given a 2 year extension, where the next coach would have, at the very least, had some foundation to build on.

I wonder if a reporter asked him about the facilities, in which case what he said is no big deal IMO. OTOH, if he chose to just blurt that out it sounds like he's making yet another excuse, even if he said it was no excuse(for the poor play).

Did we actually fire him? Because I thought it was a health thing.
Mullin thing
Again it is bigger than any one coach.

Hardest working basketball player comes here. And becomes lazy.

Guy makes tournament with like 4 different school's comes here and becomes blithering idiot.

Hall of fame coach comes here and becomes Brian Mahoney crossed with George Steinbrenner.

I have to believe Wilcher is either deep in Pitino's doghouse or already revealed that he's leaving. It make no sense that he can't get a single minute.
I’d love to know what the deal is too because Pitino himself said Wilcher is the best teammate and he’s clearly very engaged on the bench and seems to care a ton. With the way our guard play has been… just play him
