Seton Hall (UBS), Sun., Feb. 18, 5p, FS-1

Some things better left unsaid, seems self serving to me and wonder what recruits and their coaches, advisors and families think;

Relax Paultzman,
There are only two high school recruits on this team, both of whom had committed to different schools originally.....UNC and ND. Their role would have been as minimal as at SJ.

The team is composed of free agents looking for bigger pay days and bigger roles. Dingle, Luis, Taylor, Soriano, Alleyne and to an extent Ledlum, have wilted under those brighter lights. Parents and advisors were part of the negotiation $ process. If anyone is getting the short end of the stick, it is Pitino.
We are not used to a clinical approach to evaluating our performance. Anderson rarely said anything insightful. Rewind Bobby Knight's pressers or Jim Boeheim. Our old coach is from that school.

As for the NJ report on the game, we know we have shitty facilities, especially Carnesecca Arena. He also said....."but we are changing that".
He praised the Seton Hall players and coach. He also pointed to his staff's failures.

As for those envious of AJ and Jones increased productivity, both their teams have trended downward lately to become mere mortals.

Again, UCLA is 14-12 in a watered-down PAC with an expensive coach. If I were a UCLA fan, I would be very worried about competing in the BIG.
We are no UCLA and yet we should feel more confident about competing in our Big East conference next season if our NIL is truly replenished.

It would be nice if all the players try to prove Pitino wrong and go undefeated into the Big East tournament. Let's see what these 21-23 year old men are really made of and see if they can overcome their own shortcomings as pointed out by their coach.

These posts coming from people defending what he said are even more baffling to me. This day and age, take that for what it’s worth, these kids (young adults) generally don’t respond well to this kind of stuff. It’s counterintuitive at best, insane at worst.
In this day and age?
We need stop all the coddling going on in this day and age.
Some rather set these players up for failure with fake assessments, especially the advisors.
For most, this is their last chance to show if they can compete at the next level.
Traditional college basketball is DEAD. Everyone is now into immediate gratification.
The NCAA has sanctioned the new money talks scenario and coaches need to evaluate their talent accordingly.
We have basketball players playing D1 at West Point and Navy who at 22 will be asked to risk their lives for their free rides at the academies. They are not coddled from day ONE and we wouldn't want them to as citizens.
Some of you have even wondered if Pitino's workouts are taking a "toll" on some players.
Trust me, not one of these men, including the Ivies, go through what our military cadets go through daily, including their athletes.

It’s an apathetic group.

I don’t really get the point of this post. You’re comparing St. John’s players to young men who go into the armed forces? I just want to get this straight.

I’m 47 before you respond to me. Even though I have kids, one teenager, I can’t identify with anyone on this team. Anyone in college basketball for that matter. I grew up in a different era, so I mostly agree with you. But, just because we “know” what’s tough and what isn’t, doesn’t mean anyone under the age of 25 is gonna agree with us. In fact, I don’t think very highly of the toughness of anyone that age, whether I’m generalizing or not.

Point being, the tact Pitino is taking is not the right one. Regardless of whether you or I think today’s college athlete is “coddled” or is being coddled.

Rick Pitino
@RealPitino

Just an incredible job by our staff in recruiting 11 quality athletes with great potential. A culture is formed with selfless people that have a strong thirst for winning. So excited to work with these 13 talented men.
Pitino said with great "potential".
Four of these recruited players still have great potential.
The Big $$ recruits seem to have a slightly less "thirst for winning" than they alluded to in the job interview.

Would be nice if, tomorrow morning, Fr. Shanley tells Pitino over a cup of coffee in Marillac Hall to tone down the direct finger pointing at players deficiencies.

The more I think about it, the more it just doesn't sit right.

Doesn't matter how bad or how much $ they make. Do it in closed doors and be a leader and take responsibility in public.
I will definitely agree that a coach who doesn't take any responsibility (even in recruiting he said "we" failed) is a bad look.
