Seton Hall (UBS), Sun., Feb. 18, 5p, FS-1

I wonder if a reporter asked him about the facilities, in which case what he said is no big deal IMO. OTOH, if he chose to just blurt that out it sounds like he's making yet another excuse, even if he said it was no excuse(for the poor play).
Headline is very misleading. Pitino says sh*tty facilities are no excuse.

Would be nice if, tomorrow morning, Fr. Shanley tells Pitino over a cup of coffee in Marillac Hall to tone down the direct finger pointing at players deficiencies.

The more I think about it, the more it just doesn't sit right.

Doesn't matter how bad or how much $ they make. Do it in closed doors and be a leader and take responsibility in public.

I’d love to know what the deal is too because Pitino himself said Wilcher is the best teammate and he’s clearly very engaged on the bench and seems to care a ton. With the way our guard play has been… just play him

It really is hard to understand.

I’m not giving up on him yet either because I think he recruits a lot differently this offseason. But goddamn man if every loss there’s gonna be him complaining about either NIL or his own players then I start to question if he even really wants to do this.

And St. John’s has had a tough 25 years on the basketball court no denying that, but this program deserves a coach who’s going to give his all to this. It’ll be interesting to see if Rick intends to do that the more this job frustrates him
I don't think there's any doubt that Rick is going to give his all to this. Nobody cares or wants to win more than him and the press conferences are evidence of that whether people agree with that approach or not

Watch it on redstormsports. com, and draw your own conclusions.

He was asked if the challenges at St. John's were more difficult than he anticipated, and he said that as part of his general "no" answer.

I have to believe Wilcher is either deep in Pitino's doghouse or already revealed that he's leaving. It make no sense that he can't get a single minute.
As recently as this past Red Storm Report episode Pitino was talking Sim up and referring to him as if he'll be here going forward but we'll see

This situation reminds me of Larry Brown’s year with the Knicks. HOF coach comes here with handpicked roster and big expectations. Doesn’t work out and spent the back half of the year trying to get fired.

Definite frustrations this year but I'm not close to giving up on him yet. He may not be head and shoulders above everybody else X's and O's wise anymore but I think his statements about having to put together an entire roster in a matter of weeks is a legitimate gripe. Now he's had a full year to determine what/who to target in the portal and NIL shouldn't be an issue so there won't be any excuses if we're seeing similar results this time next season.
Agree on not giving up on Rick, but he really should just coach as best he can w/o swallowing mic regularly and finish the season. None of his post game stuff is motivating.

As you noted, he hopefully should be able to play the portal game better this cycle in terms of finding talent & who will fit with his system. If he lays an egg with the new additions, he should be held fully accountable.

Wow. Did not realize there was a correlation between Lavin and Mullin. That…sucks. And, we could have had Hurley which makes that even worse.
Lavin basically knew he wasn’t coming back/wasn’t getting his contract renewed (because they wanted Mullin) so he found it practically impossible to recruit which is why the recruiting fell off a cliff that last year.

Can't imagine how Pitino doesn't go into next practice without a sincere,, private apology to his players (& staff)or they'll loose any remaining respect for him as coach.

I have had the same thoughts about where Rick’s head is at this point. He got a great opportunity here and assume he will give it his best. He must realize he would be heading to dreary Atlantic City soon with Iona for MAAC Tourney in front of ten fans v being back in the esteemed Big East.

Sadly, I can't dispute that at present, although Brown did not pick that roster. If he had, Marbury never would have been on it, and they never would have traded for Steve Francis.

I was thinking more like Don Nelson's year with the Knicks, where he refused to change his style to suit his personnel, and then blamed the players for it. At least in that case, the old coach left after having success (although I think Riley lost some players his last year, even though they won 55 games), and Nelson was not their first choice. Chuck Daly was, but he opted to stay retired (of course, he came out of retirement one year later to coach the Magic, but I believe he was living in the Orlando area at that time).

Regardless of whether you think Brady developed, belongs at this level etc., if you’re Brady’s dad and you read Rick’s post game comments would you be leaning to encouraging Brady to return next year? I think that the damage that these post game comments can reflect on retaining players and future recruiting may be significant unless the only thing potential recruits care about is a lucrative NIL deal.

Phil Jackson’s knick tenure, while never coaching, also comes to mind. Bad mouthing Melo the press, picking different coaches and only wanting triangle offense
