Seton Hall (UBS), Sun., Feb. 18, 5p, FS-1

Do we think next year's going to be any better? Are we going to do another reset?

Even if we don't, half the team will be new next year, and it will be those new guys who will be pressured to turn this around.

Not good.
I think they have a 7 footer and a Greek hot shooter committed. Correct me if I'm wrong

The more I digest these comments from Pitino, and the comments he's made all season negatively about his players, I wonder why any of them would want to give any effort for him.
The problem is he had zero faith in the players we had. He just let them all go except for two. He should have held onto Posh and Wusu( the guy whose full name I can't recall but plays for the hall now) . Maybe one other too. I always felt the team wasn't that bad but CMA just couldn't coach and a coach like Pitino would have picked up 5 more wins with that team

Because the game isn't decided in the first half. When good teams (which is almost the entire Big East) buckle down, we buckle. Seton Hall, almost to a man, is more athletic, more physical, and more tough minded than our guys. They shot poorly from the field and the line, but found another way to win.

Talking about building a culture? First Willard and now Holloway have done that at Seton Hall. They are not bursting with talent, but they always play hard and very physical, and if you beat them, they usually make you earn it. You can see the difference in effort and tenacity between their players and ours. They didn't even celebrate their important road win like it was some kind of upset (they were slight underdogs). Seems like they knew what the outcome would be once they started playing tough defense and attacking the rim on offense.
We should be getting blown out by 40 each game if we are so unathletic and etc etc. Not build huge leads. I don’t care if a game is 40 minutes. It’s not a one time thing we had a big lead. It’s been several now.

Maybe I’m reading too much into it but does Pitino saying “we” when talking about recruiting players imply he trusted other staff members to be lead evaluators?

But he (a) recruited them and (b) is coaching them. So if he is going to say they stink, then he really needs to state explictly that he’s the reason why. Which of course he will never do.
actually, I thought he did and that is the problem doing it publicly. you win and lose together, Rick separated himself from his team yesterday.

he tried to build them up probably too much earlier in the year, realizing what he had as a team. Didn't work, so here we are, unfortunately.

I don’t really put much stock in it IMO. Even DePaul may keep it close with better teams early. Doesn’t mean they’re good.

This team would be a lot better with Storr, David Jones and even Posh and Wusu still here they are far better then most of the transfers we got I think those 4 guys with Soriano , Jenkins , Zuby and I guess RJ and then still take Dunlap and Wilcher still think they will develop if they stay. He let too much of the existing team go so you got what you have a bunch of mid major pieces that don’t fit together. I hold out hope next year with more time he will get better players that fit his style I just still don’t like him ripping the team publicly especially singling guys out and ripping their faults just not a good look.

I'm not saying that this is THE problem with this team but I have found, in general and in my humble opinion, that the younger generation has been corrupted by "participation trophy syndrome". They don't have the work ethic that I was taught by my parents. They have the general attitude that "I showed up, now give me my trophy!" has perpetuated.

I remember going to my grandsons games and I was told that they don't keep scores! Why keep score? They showed up! This perpetuates mediocrity, lack of effort and a lax attitude.

Again, before some of you pile on me for my thoughts, this is not true of ALL of this generation, but this was the "modus operandi" for their generation. This is what they were taught in school and a good portion of them took to this psychology because it was the easiest path for them and kept them from having to make that "extra effort" to succeed.

I have no problem with publicly criticizing the team & even the players to some extent. I’m okay with Pitino saying, “I now realize I recruited a flawed roster, this season is dissapointing, we’re not fast, we’re not tough, etc…” I’m a believer that coaches who address the issues in a truthful way (once they become apparent to everyone) are going to find success quicker than coaches who try to make things seem better than they are or coddle underperforming players.

However I think if you’re going to name players specifically you need to be more careful and I think you can only do that a limited number of times before it losses its effectiveness on the players or you begin to come off as a jerk. I think Pitino has now crossed that line. Just my opinion. We got his message. The team is bad and he recruited them. We get it. Listing players by name who are slow felt like unnecessarily twisting the dagger. You’re Rick Pitino. Your ego should be able to take the hit for a bad season. You’re not getting fired. You’ll be able to recruit. I’m even okay with throwing the team under the bus to an extent (because although I find plenty to blame Pitino for I’m also extremely disappointed in these players) but now it feels like he’s throwing them under the bus and then backing it up over them. Say less Rick.

Maybe this year just needs to be chalked up to a learning year. Rick came in and, for whatever reason, cleaned house. He got rid of guys that while having great success individually on other teams could not succeed together as a team at SJU. This years' team seems to have been built like an office fantasy sports team; just get the guys with the best stats and don't worry about anything else. Unfortunately, this group of guys never found a way to mesh and play together.

Have to trust in the fact that Rick has been able to succeed everywhere he has been and just realize this team was simply just patched together in hopes of getting something coming from nothing. I mentioned earlier that I do worry about next year because there is the potential for a bunch of roster spots being taken up by guys that arguably don't belong in high major basketball, but in this day and age maybe those guys move on and open up roster spots. I feel like we'll be looking at probably five or six new transfers next season and hopefully those five or six guys are brought in with more thought and care.

The big question on my mind is if our hall of fame coach will learn from his mistakes building this year's team and not replicate them when building a team for next year? And will the failure of this season just create that extra motivation to drive him even harder next year? There has to be an appeal to playing in NYC under the big lights for one of the greatest coaches of all time. Or possibly there isn't and this whole thing is cursed, and this is just the hellish reality we live in.

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying in general. But the Seton Hall players yesterday, down 19 points, showed grit and determination. Adults need to lead the way and their coach did.

Why did Soriano start yesterday? He got benched for being ineffective, continued to be ineffective, then got his starting job back.

He never earned his starting job back.

Rick has been all over the place this year. I really dont understand anything he has done.
