Season Tickets

Yes, but you need a dial-up modem and an AOL account.

Then you can chat about it on the old AOL boards that pre-date Redmen.com

If I wanted to do something silly like get season tickets for the San Francisco Dons, I could do it with a few clicks. An interactive map tells me in real time how many seats are available in each section, and then you can narrow it down from there.

In the Big East in 2019, there really shouldn't be any need to speak to a real person -- especially when those people seem to take three-hour lunches and schedule all of their medical appointments during work hours.

I was able to renew my ''gold" tickets online using the ten payment plan. No offers to upgrade my seats at MSG. I will wait a while and then call to see what is "available".

The Gold Plan includes a free game day photo op with the 114 crew on msg game days :) I tried to get the school to throw in a free bronx pale ale voucher but they told me to F Off

Maybe they can throw in a 114 crew t shirt...

That can't be true because in your story you spoke to someone. And we all know that doesn't happen.

Wonderful people though. If you donate a ton.

For the record, I have had a difficult time getting through. IT took a couple of weeks and a few emails but I did hear from Melissa. I would suggest to you that it's likely a whole lot less about donations, but the mere fact that when you have just one revenue producing sport, you are staffed a certain way that keeps you overwhelemd during renewal period for that sport. It's kind of like my pastor once said when I was on parish council and parishioners complained that the parking lot was too small on Easter Sunday and Christmas. "We don't build parking lots for those days", he replied irritably.

I will tell you what has always worked for me, and that's building relationships. When my kids were away at college, I got far more attention from administration than my donations warranted, simply because I took the time to build relationships, to thank them for the things they were doing well, to greet them on holidays, etc. With SJU I'm not even looking for more attention, and my relationships go beyond even their employment at the school. Just ask Moose about our common friend who doesn't work at SJU any longer who I am still friends with.

This is a risky move, especially when you consider that the donations to the Red White Club are basically no longer tax deductible. The big money donors will still shell out, but the guys (and gals) who are required to make $2,500 or $4,000 donations to the Red White Club before they can buy season tickets? Hmmmmm....

If this wasn't yet another rebuilding year, with yet another new coach, and yet another season of "just wait until next year" this wouldn't be a big deal. But it is and SJU is playing with fire here IMO.

The donations required for Gold level seats are $250 per ticket donation I believe. Nowhere near what you are expressing,

Beast I hear what you’re saying, but to not be staffed properly during the one time of year that can make or break how much revenue your one revenue producing sport generates, is just really really bad business. Stores like Macy’s and Bloomingdales hire extra staff during the holidays, as do UPS and Fedex. The ticket office ought to have more staff during this time of year. That’s just smart business, especially at a time when they’re asking the fan base to cough up a lot more money for season tickets.

I wasn't talking about the Gold tickets. There are 2 levels above that that require donations of $2,500 and $4,000:

I believe those are for the seats literally on the court and in the lower bowl at msg. Yhe gold seats are great imo, and I think you see a better game a little bit off the floor
That’s not the point. The people who make a contribution of $2500 per seat for the right to buy season tickets in the lower bowl are not interested in the Gold seats.

The point is that the school is risking turning off these season ticket holders in the lower bowl at MSG who can no longer get a tax deduction. How many seats is that? I would guess 1,000 or so. Not a good group to piss off with repeated coaching changes.

Being out of state and not having the ability to justify season tickets, as I look at the packages, it seems the Gold package of $1,180 ($250 donation + $990 seat price) is reasonable for 18 or so games. Basically $65 game (+ tax?)

Where I think it really starts to hurt is for those needing 4,5+ tickets for a full family or entertain friends etc.

Those Diamond and Platinum packages are exactly as their name implies... The best seats and limited to the few who might be able to afford that. As a fan, I'm grateful for those who have the financial ability to donate at that kind of level to support the program.

Most except diehards, cannot, or will not get to 18 games, and for that, small packages or individual game tickets make sense either direct or secondary market. I'm waiting for availability of the BE opener against Butler on NY eve.

As far staffing, this has been an issue since as far back as I can remember, being a student in the AD dept. There should be no reason they can't get more students in the Sport Management program to be interns to help handle call volume. If it's really challenging, bubble those up to the full time staff (Melissa).

I will say that I emailed Melissa about a week after the price increases were announced with a unique type of request and she was 100% responsive and accommodating to my request. My request was actually to downgrade my package and remove tickets from my package so she could’ve easily brushed it off but it was resolved exactly how I wanted it in a timely manner.

Actually, not true. I know some people who were located lower and moved up to what they believed are better seats by being up a little off the floor, and they can easily afford the donations and have given SJU much much more than that. The tax law is a little murky because it is aimed at the benefits provided by a donation.. SJU advices donors to consult their tax advisors.

Understand any complaints that there should at least be student workers available to answer phones, provide basic answers and take messages. In my company we've had an electronic phone system for 25 years yet always have had people to answer the phones during normal business hours because i've felt it important for callers to hear a human voice right away. So, agree with Monte, even if we can't be geared up in a perfect way.

One other thought beast: I have been a season ticket holder on and off since the early 90's. The ticket office should have a few people dedicated to reaching out to any season ticket holder who has not renewed. I am sure that there are certain people who are on the fence(I was for a while, I no longer am), and I believe that many of those people may decide to renew after having a nice conversation with someone from the ticket office. The personal touch-as you mentioned with your company-is always good for business.
