Season Tickets

Support your program people. Make this thing sustainable. If I were living in NYC area still, I’d do it in a heartbeat. SJU needs cash flow into the program and you’re getting plenty of games out of it as well.

Do you how many major conference programs don't require a donation in order to purchase season tickets?

I guess the good news is that donations are tax deductible, and if you were already donating the increase isn't as great.
I'll have to read this from a desktop, but I also will ask the AD to weigh in on the I'mpact of this ruling. It appears to penalize donors simply for purchasing tickets.
I did meet with the athletic department and was told that there are possibly ways to still make a deduction on your income tax for this but was advised to consult an accountant.

Spoke at length about some of the characterizations of athletic department personnel that have been posted here, and although it's always impossible to defend someone in a he said she said scenario was given a very different story, including spending 45 minutes on the phone with a person, where the complainant asked for a refund of 15 years of season tickets, complained that athletic development wasn't recruiting a big man (they raise funds, not recruit).

Admittedly, they are aware that the requirement for donations comes at a time where it appears we may have a down year. But on the other hand, the new structure is consistent with other conference schools. In the past, donations were only required for the best seats.

My take is that we all rail for a big time program, and even for very good seats, the required donations are somewhat small. They are at a level where any passionate fan who can afford to should already be donating at that level or above if they want a high quality program. Donations are discretionary, but if we ever want to compete at the highest levels with a Villanova, Georgetown, or any other Big East schools either academically or athletically, donations are a huge part - quality costs money.

Not going to respond to this subject again, but will stand by my opinions of the athletic department personnel over relationships and interactions with them over the past 25 years. They are first and foremost mostly alumni themselves, are great fans, and more than that, great people.
Thanks for clearing that up. Good to know. I would thank them myself, except it's been two weeks since I was told I would get a call and my phone still hasn't rung. But now that I know they were busy walking you through your 2019 taxes I'm fine.
Melissa Manno - byrnem@stjohns.edu Ticket Manager
Paul Sclafana - sclafanp@stjohns.edu - for questions about you donation
Nick Vendikos - vendikon@stjohns.edu - same as above

If you do not get a response from any of these folks by the end of the week, let me know, and I will try to help.

I appreciate that, other than Nick those are the same people who have been ghosting me for close to a month now. And I mean this in the best possible way, not snarky, that if I really had to get to one of these people I know folks who can make it happen. I'm just pointing out that although these folks might be responsive to a certain level fan, they are not bothering at all at other levels.

It is what it is. Thanks again for the offer, and I will leave this thread be now.

It is the AD from Duke he thinks he is still there. Btw he is planning to leave st John's as soon as the AD job opens at Duke. It is a total joke and the only way to get back at them is to cancel the season tickets. I'm not going to say anything about Anderson who is 64 yrs old but we still dont have a big man on the horizon. So they are putting a poor product on the floor and raising prices.

I heard part of the reason he left was because he wasn't next in line for the Duke AD job.

Now that he's suddenly five years younger, Dee will attack MA too.

Cragg can make a greater change to the culture here than he could at Duke which runs itself at this point. SJU fans, man-up and support your University and team. A common thread with all the very successful programs is great fan and alumni support.

There will always be wackjob fans. But for some reason this school has a high ratio considering its a 'small' private university and not a massive state school.

I heard he was told he would have to be an AD at another school to be considered

Ok maybe I was wrong about Doherty but not about passing on Pitino

Doherty or Kevin Stallings told you that ?

After nearly 2 decades of nothing better then mediocrity(I'm being kind) under 4 failed coaches, the school decided to jack up ticket prices considerably in the hopes that the large majority of the season ticket holders would forget the past and buy in to the hype of the new coach. I'm not knocking anyone who decided to renew, nor do I think those of us who chose not to renew are any lesser fans or that we need to "man-up" as you say, to prove our loyalty. Every single person should do what they feel is best for them. I will still support the team by purchasing tickets to select games and watching most games on TV. The fact that I will not renew my season tickets this year will not make me root any less for the team or make me any less of a fan.

Very well said.....for the record, I have never been a season ticket holder, probably will never be; my “life responsibilities” never made it feasible. I have only been on the SJU campus for about the 20-25 games I have attended there through the 50 years or so I have been a fan. Probably have attended about four times that at the Garden. Doesn’t make me less an irrational fan, rooting for a sports team knows no rationality.

Not calling people out individually or anything of the sort. It’s just that there are a ton of complainers about the program and yet when we don’t have the money to compete with the bigger sports schools, they lament it. Lots of those schools have fans that consistently attend, good or bad, because of love for said school and program. I think SJU needs more of those, and building that base starts with existing students and building a following.

Someone put up before about having a met 20 game package and all the add on benefits. The school needs to get creative. Maybe aside from the season tix you get add ons like watching a practice maybe a St. John’s picture day where you could bring your kids and get pictures with the staff and players ( especially good to get younger kids as fans early ) maybe a 20% discount on campus concessions during game or during certain games maybe a 30 minute shoot around at carnesseca anytime during the year etc. time to think outside the box and most of this stuff wouldn’t even cost the school money. Heck they’d probably sell more concessions more than offsetting the discount

Great ideas...all things that don’t cost them a dime and foster loyalty.

It's a ridiculous notion that you have to be a season ticket holder to be a great fan. Some of the our most ardent posters here are greats fans, and they live far and near to campus. They follow every game, transaction and bit of news.

I liken them as fans to myself as a Mets fan. I had 30 game pkgs for 4 seasons but gave them up when I was relocated and coincidentally the team went in the dumper. I still follow the team, go to 2-6 games every season, but only become a more frequent ticket purchaser when they are good. I'm a fan of the Mets, not a supporter.

With st. John's, I choose to be a supporter. I believe in the mission of the university, and am active with time and effort and financially. Gradually and in small increments I began to do both. There was a period when I had neither the time or resources to do either. When it comes to athletics, I believe that successful sports teams are rocket fuel for nearly everything a university Hope's to achieve - better students, more visibility, more donations, and funds to support all academic, athletic, social, and charitable endeavors.

I don't pretend that my donations control policy, mission or any decisions whatsoever. With a university as broad as sju, I won't agree with everything. I do know however, that at a school with a single one revenue producing sport, that revenue must support all sport teams the university offers. The athletic department raises less than $3 million per year in donations. It helps to pay a high priced coach like Mike Anderson and his staff, but even that is insufficient to cover the entire staff.

The way I see it, while we need as many great fans as we possibly can have, ticket holders or not, we need many more supporters to advance the cause of the university. As fans we look at success on the court as an end, but as supporters we know that all good things come from winning college teams. To me that's the goal, although whipping Villanova, Georgetown and the rest of the conference, and success in the dance feels much more satisfying then raising the profile of the university.

Again and finally, you don't need to buy tickets to be a fan, but a successful program needs both ticket sales and supporters to become great.
