Rysheed Jordan

Jordan is more of an off guard & does not seem ready to orchestrate things. Making a flashy pass, as he does often, does not constitute being an efficient PG. Ironically there are two wing guards who are hot right now. That said, at the end of the day he needs to get plenty of PT for us to really succeed. Hopefully he practices hard, stays positive & gets back in the starting lineup soon.

Rysheed strikes me as the type of kid who could really profit from time with John Lucas in the off season. The positive effect on Chris & Dee has been amazing.

I did not see last nights game but I don't think Jordan has played nearly well enough to be a lock to start or play X amount of minutes. He has ability for sure, but for whatever reasons his play at SJU has been uneven to say the least. Does our best team potentially have Jordan getting major minutes? Yes but let's not forget one could make an argument that our season lsat year was sabotaged / at least negatively impacted by Sampson playing for a contract, maybe Lavin is trying to prevent that from happening again.

Sampson averaged 13 points and 6 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the floor. We could use some more of that sort of sabotage.

In 43 minutes over two games Branch has scored four points and has one assist and three turnovers. If nothing else that should keep Jordan on the floor.

Just floating something out there, but I'm sure Rysheed is a bit down about not starting. Think about it, he's been the man and a star most of his life in basketball, and now he's facing adversity possibly for the first time. I think it will work out for the best.

Does anyone on this board who is close to the program think that Lavin is playing games with this kid and his playing time in order to keep him from leaving after this year?

That it's crossing minds and not just mine is damning enough. Ask yourself: if you're a highly rated recruit, would you rather go to Kentucky and be treated like a king or go to Saint John's and play behind walk-ons for a coach who fat shames his players in the press. Three years later and Harrison, who is having one of the great careers in Saint John's history, is invariably described as having emotional problems.

This could all be much ado about nothing. The first five games Rysheed was putting up awesome numbers on good shooting and filling the stat line to boot.

Now he's had a few less impressive games, isn't starting, and sent out a few retweets. Not ideal but hopefully not a big deal either.

Players go up and down, especially 19 year old kids. Hopefully we are building towards more consistent high level production from him like we've seen many times already in his one year and change here.

This isn't something be too alarmed about. We'll keep an eye on this as the season progresses but I'm hoping it is Lavin sending a message that the turnovers need to stop.

Sheed was much more under control last night. Hopefully Lavins message is working like it seemed to last night and rysheed continues to play well. He will find his way in the starting lineup soon enough if he does.

Playing games can also speed up his departure.

Both Lavin's and Jordan. Jordan's problem is he as already made his bed and is leaving imo. Lavin's current method may be to calm him down by seeing the flow of the game from the bench but one of the assistant coaches need to be in his ear for that to work. I have not noticed that to be the case so it could be that Rysheed is a tough nut to crack. I know some here like Jamal Branch but the kid has shown me nothing while here at SJ. His passes are soft and he has a fraction of Rysheed's talent but obviously Lavin sees him as more coachable. It is a dilemma that I hope gets resolved by the Long Beach game.

The first 5 games, he had 22 Turnovers which included a 9-turnover game.
If this was Branch or Phil Greene, would we be so forgiving if either of them were benched?

Cut his minutes until he gets it. I don't think this is a grandstanding move like what coach pulled against GTown last year.

I think this is necessary until Sheed understands his role.

Are we winning? Until that changes this is a non-issue for me. If a disappointing loss does occur, expect this to cause a shi* storm

We should be concerned how Rysheed interprets it.
The effect on the court is negligble, because he's still getting more or less the same amount of minutes as a starter. But if Rysheed is retweeting the complaints, and he is, that's a sign somebody isn't happy.

Yes but some think it might've been a friend of sheed using his account. And also as SJU15 pointed out Rysheed has still be very active and lively whether on bench, in timeouts, or on the floor in the games where he hasn't started.

So let's just let it play out. I agree maybe Rysheed did retweet those complaints but for now we aren't sure so we have to see this situation progress,

I think most of us are gun shy about "shoes dropping" because we have been disappointed by events off the court too often. I am operating on the assumption that things with Jordan are ok. On to Fordham game!

Has the no social media rule during the season been lifted?

It appears they can not tweet, but are allowed to go on and retweet tweets. After games DLo and phil usually go on a spree of retweeting fans that compliment them or are hyped about the win.

He should be annoyed about losing minutes. That's what any coach expects when they bench a player who is not performing up to their level.

It is now up to the player to respond the right way by working hard and improving his play. This is normal stuff for any program in any sport.

exactly. .. but the Lavin haters need to find something to bitch about aside from what he wears, since the team is playing well.

St Johns fan boards. Where losing brings paranoia and winning brings even more paranoia

Jordan has physical talent. He's long, he's strong, he sees the floor fairly well, and he is good at getting to the rim.

On the downside, he has no jump shot worth talking about, he hasn't quite figured out how to protect the ball well enough getting to the rim against D1 big men, he is prone to dumb/lazy/flashy passes, he doesn't move his feet well enough on D, and he has a tendency to play D with his hands flailing out in front of him (which contributes to his lack of good lateral movement on D).

In short he's still playing like a freshman with a lot to learn, but his attitude projects that he's an All-American.

Something has to give, one way or another. Either he has to be broken down some so that he can be built up correctly, or they can let him just go be Rysheed and think he is all that even though he isn't. He has the tools to be all that, but he's light years away from converting them into actually being all that.

If Lavin is actually trying to teach/coach him, then I have no problem with the decision not to start him.

It's comical when people complain about what he wears.
