Rysheed Jordan

If Rysheed Jordan continues to play the way he has played, and he continues to improve he will be the best point guard to play at SJU since Mark Jackson. And this is coming from one of the biggest Erick Barkley fans ever....

Sacrilege of sacrilege - Rysheed Jordan's ceiling is so much damned higher than Jackson's it's sick. No doubt they are two different types of players, but on Jackson's best days he couldn't take over a game or electrify a crowd like Jordan. Don't get me wrong, Jackson made the most of a limited body, and is one of the best assists guys in NBA history - but Jordan has the potential to do it all - rebound, score inside out, make the hard pass look simple and the simple look methodical. I can't possibly cry about what our roster will look like in two years if he is a part of it.

I bet all those Temple fans that were "happy" to not have gotten Jordan earlier in the season have to be sick to their stomachs after seeing some of Jordan's recent highlights. I still cannot believe his dunk and his bounce pass against Seton Hall, forget about last night.

And, I agree with Beast. His ceiling is sick. He is 6-4, and a great passer and finisher. He's gonna be a top 10 PG in the NBA within 5 years.

You mean like when Mark scored 34 of STJ's 67 points against No. 10 Gtown in '87?

Jordan is superb and could well be an all-time great, but let's not start rewriting our own history.

Or the Mark Jackson who got torched for 4 years by Pearl Washington? Jackson was NOT a great scorer for us, but was a great point guard. Jordan can be much, much more, and anyone watching him knows that. Jackson was not projected as a can't miss player, and if you look at the number of times he was traded, you realize that even NBA teams couldn't reconcile his deficiencies against 10 assists per game.

Barkley was one of my favorite players. He came in more polished than Jordan and was a better defender and exceptional smarts. Still he was an understated player. He almost came across as lackadaisical while having lightning quick hands and feet and was a passing prodigy. I'll never forget how there was so much talk about how John Linehan was the ultimate defender and Barkley made him look like a child even shaking him out of his boots onto the floor on a couple of occasions. Similarly Mark Jackson was understated and I think you really have to have a decent understanding of the game to have fully appreciated Jackson. I remember "fans" saying they hated Jackson. Unbelievable. Same ones crying about how the game had passed by LC. This when we were kicking butt and winning the Big East. (Still remember my awesome Beast of the East sweatshirt.)

Jordan has more potential upside than both of them though. But right now it is potential and we've heard the "ifs" before. He is becoming a great college player. Jackson played 4 years but even if you account for the old school under/upperclassmen mentality he went into the NBA as a really mature player and earned NBA Rookie of the Year honors and had a good/long career over much more heralded draft picks. Barkley could have had a better NBA career with another year or two of seasoning at St Johns.

btw what I'm really loving to see is the chemistry developing between Jordan and Obekpa. That is a killer combination as Obekpa's offensive game develops and Jordan is the perfect type of point guard to facilitate that.

We seriously need to ease up on the hyperboles around here.

Agree. Also, Jordan is very adept at getting Sampson ball at the right spots. He clearly makes folks around him better.

I don't think what I am saying is farfetched. He is young, he is tall, he can pass, he can take it to the bucket.

I'm not saying he is even remotely there yet, but the Wall and Irving comparisons are gonna be made at some point. He has a great handle for a 1 his size.

Do you think he's physically able to eventually get to play 30 to 35 minutes a game?

The only thing that's going to prevent that from happening is if he continues to pick up silly fouls. Once he gets beyond that there's ne reason he can't be on the court for 80%+ of the game.

I don't see why not. My biggest reason to say what I originally said is his height. He will fill out, he will raise his b-ball IQ....I think we're seeing the best NBA prospect we've had in decades right now, although, that, unfortunately, isn't saying a whole lot.

Just to add, I guess you could argue Moe Harkless, but Jordan, IMO, plays a position more unique to the NBA than Moe. No offense to Moe, there's a lot of guys who can do what he does, who have the size he has and the game he has. I'm not saying Moe has hit his ceiling yet, because he hasn't, but Jordan's skill-set is already pretty advanced for his position, but his size is what sets him apart. As evidenced by making a 20-foot bounce pass with 5 seconds left in a tied game, blowing by his opponent and emphatically dunking in the lane or repeatedly driving to the basket last night, he's got that "it" factor, too. Just my .02. Take it for what it's worth, .02.

I said it in the game thread...it is absolutely no coincidence that we've "gelled" since Lavin handed the keys to Jordan.

Jordan is finally turning it on. He has for sure has the best NBA potential of any player on our team. He's got NBA size, NBA athleticism, a solid shooting foundation, can make nice passes, blow past his defender, plays good man defense and has very quick hands - creating turnovers.

Things he needs to improve on:
1) Needs to be a little greedy and just blow by his defender to get to the rim. He needs to get fouled more. Perhaps Lavin & Co have not given him free reign yet for him just to do what he wants. So it's hard to say if this is on Jordan or the coaches not letting him.
2) Improve his shooting. He's got a solid foundation (over 40% from three for a good 7 games stretch at one point, and he was 3 for 6 from three last night. He's got very good form - just keep working on it.
3) He has to work on his pick n' roll skills...
4) He's got NBA athleticism - but he needs to put on a little muscle - without losing quickness.

In an ideal world, he'll get there after the end of next season - meaning he's had a great individual year and the team was successful as well.

^^^Nicely summed up. His shooting definitely needs to be worked on, and his strength will come with age. His aggressiveness is obvious and his rebounding is already pretty damn good for a 1.

Paul - very good analysis. Obviously if Jordan has the NBA career that Jackson had, he will have done very well for himself. Jackson got the most out of his ability, was a terrific passer, and also would post up smaller guards. So, no disrespect on my part at all. Just saying that Jordan has an tremendous upside, possibly more than any point guard we've ever had here. Before it's over he will take over this team, and something incredibly special may emerge.

Agree with you wholeheartedly on the Barkley comments as well.
