I just don't want to count on Heron getting green light until it happens. Expectations will only lead to disappointment if it doesn't materialize.

I hear you loud and clear RSNC and while I don't disagree our history would indicate caution/skepticism, in this case I am for some reason optimistic.

It very well might happen, NCJ. And that'll be, because we're on a roll.
To be greedier, we may even get the trifecta prize of Mike Rice joining us around July.
The stars may indeed be realigning.
Hoping Paultz is wrong for a change, and the world won't end.

I have known Mike Rice for years, good man. Virtually everyone who really knows him would agree and that includes virtually every Rutgers player who played for him, PC nonsense notwithstanding. And that comes from talking directly to many of them. Anyway, having said that, the “cult” status he has attained on this board is funny to me. Would I object to him being hired? Not at all. Do I think he would be a program changer? No. Would he open up a pipeline to NJ’s top players? No. If he had that kind of influence wouldn’t it be logical to think other programs would be around looking to hire him?

A few key posters think he'll be an asset to the program.
Do your disagree?
Just asking.

No, I don’t disagree he would be an asset. He would be, hence the statement I would have no problem were he hired. But you and others act like he would be some kind of savior driving the never ending innuendo criticism of this staff, who I personally think have done a good job getting us to mediocrity so quickly. They need to take the next step of course but I see no reason the staff has to change. And no one has presented any real reasons to change except that we haven’t progressed fast enough for their fancy. Oh, yes, table sitting, and letting assistants sometimes run huddles, which can be a relatively common occurrence if one bothered to observe other teams huddles. So my comment was directed more at posters who seem obsessed with Rice, the (I think) over the top criticism of this staff, and the almost complete lack of recognition of what this staff has accomplished, yes accomplished, in what I consider, two years. Yes, Rice is a fine coach and should we decide to hire him, he would be an asset. But I know how quickly you will all start criticizing him when he doesn’t bring the Jersey stars with him because that’s really what it is about for you and others. Maybe if you did some digging yourself and didn’t trust the “key posters” so much.

I think Mike R would be an asset, not an instant game changer, but am certainly open to other experienced guys as well.

I assume your dig is directed at me. Btw, Rice had an college opportunity not so long ago that would have necessitated moving from East Coast. He however wants to avoid uprooting family. This comes from a buddy who knows him personally.

Lastly, Mullin has had many conversations with Rice over the past year on campus and otherwise as I understand. My educated impression is Rice would love to come here for obvious reasons.

Ultimately it is Chris’ choice to make staff change or not & make a any decision on who to hire. I will support his decision and won’t get crazy if he stands pat.

What or who is a “key poster” ?

For all the insane chat on this forum, to call out that 'key poster' is just crazy.

Thank you , Logen for your Post . It one of the best ones on the entire Rice for St John’s campaign that leaves many of us puzzled . You nailed it ! I am sure you have noticed the emphasis has always been the same mantra ,i. e. Rice would come cheap , Rice will
Bring NJ Recruits, Rice brings added experience to a inexperienced SJU Coaching Staff , Rice and Mullin would be a good combo, Rice could be a Candidate to replace Mullin , when and if , Chris leaves the job. All this has surfaced from the Rice Campaign staffers . Like you , I agree Rice has credentials , experience , knowledge , etc . But, he brings immense baggage as well . And , if a Coaching spot opened , I would trust Mullin to select from among many candidates . Not just Rice . In the last 72 or so hours, Ponds has recommitted , Heron has transferred , and , suddenly the Pundits like Zach, Rothstein, Imus, have all commented on how strong the SJU Roster is becoming and how the upcoming season looks most promising . Despite all the good news this week , we have the same old song being played . I mentioned Imus , since Deidre being a Nova Grad , knows B.B.! An Insider , she is .., Great work, Logen !

Can we take a deep breath, and restart. We are needling each other over the extent of what Mike Rice would contribute to the program.

We may be (finally!) at a positive tipping point for the program. Let us just enjoy a bit of happiness.

My thoughts exactly.

So what I would hope to get from a Rice hire is also a second recruiter who is out all the time in gyms etc using all the connections he has built over the years helping do the legwork

I only see benefits from having someone with a lot of connections like Panther had mentioned plus someone who has a lot of experience in coaching in general. I'd be open to other people as well but I definitely dont see a lot of negatives with Rice as an assistant coach

I don't disagree with anything you said, Mike, but I am wondering why, if Rice is such a valued commodity as a coach with significant recruiting ties, hasn't he landed a D-1 coaching gig yet?

I dont know him personally so I have no clue. Certainly right after the rutgers thing he would have been a toxic hire. Paultz alluded to him having had an offer but would have had to uproot his family from east coast which he didnt want to do

Maybe it's a combination of things and him waiting for the right opportunity on the east coast. That's just speculation on my part

Not at all, I recognize and appreciate all you do for this site. I also notice and agree with the fact that you almost always caveat what you hear and share. Very few times have you shared anything as an absolute and again, I perfectly well understand why you do that, it is the intelligent and prudent approach to take. Nothing is something until the ink is drying. My dig, as it were, is to those posters who take everything you post as gospel and try to find blame, usually directed at Mullin, if it doesn’t happen. It is also in my contrary nature to naturally bristle at terms like “key posters”. I sincerely apologize if you thought I was digging you, this site is not much without you, and if I had a gun to my head to name a “key poster” it would certainly be you.

ALL I said was that Rice is not the savior as many here seem to think. I also agreed that he would be an ASSET were he hired. I never offered a single negative to his hiring other than the overblown expectations (IMO) of the players he would bring with him. Sorry if that was not understood but that is CLEARLY what I wrote. Maybe you can ask Panther if he thinks Lewis and Antoine would come to SJU if Rice comes.
