Roster Turnover

I don't know about the rest of you, but I love having a guy named "guinness" and a guy named "draft" going back and forth on the same thread.

It really brings things to a head when you're talking about how stout our fan base is.  They have definitely tapped into something.

I'll show myself out - you don't have to pint me in the right direction.

For the record. I never told anyone what to think. I tried to calm some of you down. You want to take that the way some of you are....sorry. I wrote what I thought on the same message board a few of you are chastising me for expressing MY opinion on. You know, the way I feel.

Sorry, for all the years I’ve been posting here and the almost 40 years I’ve been a fan, there have been much more worrisome times than now, and I just hope that’s realized.

I think it was a perfect storm of factors.  Some kids like GWill, Moore and Earlington were unhappy with their roles for some reason.  The only head-scratcher is GWill because he played as much as his injury would have allowed and maybe he just figured he should get most of Dunn’s minutes?  I dunno.  Here’s my best guess.

McGriff-  wants to play more and bit much Pt in sight behind Posh and his inability to slide over and play SG

G-will-  No idea.  Lavin recruit. Anderson treated him with kid gloves.  Maybe family influence? I don’t know.

Dunn- thought he was going to move on to try to play overseas or something.  Only reason I can see is that maybe he wants to run the full-time PG spot for somebody.

Moore-  came in and thought he was the man and he was close.  Got plenty of time but obviously see eye to eye and we know his “social issues”

Cole-  a step slow for this style of play.  I get it.  Wasn’t a fit.

Roberts- not for this level. Likely transfer to appropriate level.

Earlington-  thinks he’s a shooting guard and is not.  Figures maybe somebody else will give him a chance to do so.  Became a good shooter and helped us off the bench with solid minutes.  IMO refused to play ball inside the arc and it seems was unhappy with that.  Also a Lavin recruit.

Caraher- transfer to better level.

I will add that I wonder how many of the kids like Cole and Moore wanted to put the work in that cma required of them.  Practices are hard and a grind.

I think coupling all the above with this extra free year and free transfer and lots figured they’d ship themselves around.  Kida have to be re-recruited and many want that for various reasons.

I think CMA needs to find kida that full understand how we play and want to play that way and understand that we play a deep roster, not just 5 guys. It’s our style and what we do.

Guys like Posh, wusu and Champ seem to thrive in this style and buy in.

Yep, perfect storm and a fine post about it! Many valid ideas on both sides of the fence here are a couple of mine:
1.maybe this board should be divided this into three boards - optimists, pessimists and middle of the roadsters;
2.easy to critique the Coach so I ask - who would be a better alternative to Mike Anderson - in re coaching ability and willingness to take the job;
3.I continue to like our triumvirate of Mike Anderson, Mike Cragg and the new President;
4.is a mere 2 years on the job sufficient time to evaluate anyone or anything??? Many here realize it takes time - “patience and time”  as George  Harrison sang -
this is a major operation and after almost 3 decades of poor to mediocre seasons...well ain’t happening as quickly as some desire;
5. Coach K my fellow West Point man took the better part of 4 years to get established and people wanted him fired;
6.likely we’ll het a few more kids + I believe those in the portal can change their young
kinds;
7.finally, the key players imho make that in my very humble opinion - are champ, posh, Wusu and the two new NYers Pinzon and Triore. They’re still here as is the sky. Why I’m looking at the sky as I type.
8.Oops one last point. This situation is very important but after all it’s only college  BBall.

thanks again MCNPA
yep perfect storm.

Can't speak for others but I am calm. And you did tell people to grow a pair and make some weird crack about what kind of soldiers we would be. Some might consider that a personal attack. I don't see how its relevant to a discussion about the team. It's an opinion, but not about the team.

So yes, when you challenge my manhood I do take that personally. If you want to make a real apology now's the time. The one above is weak. A real man owns up to his mistakes, don't you think?

And I'm done now so it's really up to you. You can apologize or rip me a new one. I won't respond if you rip me.

Your call.

Damn Lawman and Kranmars both with homers on the same days. This is like the old R&P days in the early 2000's

If I remember correctly this years record was 16-11 NOT 16-15! That is a fine improvement over 2020,62%  vs 52% winning percentage.It probably would have been a 4 -5 win increase based on full season!No reason why that can’t be improved upon again next year, even if Julian defects. I’d still bet on CMA and his system!
I’m not talking about this season.

im saying, there better not be fans who would be happy if we go 16-15 in the future just because it preserves some streak. F the streak if we aren’t making NCAA Tournaments
Why are you losing your mind about what other fans think about the streak?
You talk about its all about making NCAA Tournaments but then incessantly complain about a bunch of non-making tournament players moving on, BTW most who contributed very little to this team.

If your goal is to make tournaments then you should be happy that this staff has a chance to bring in better talent than the ones that have been here the last 2 years and did not achieve your said objective.

I for one, believe all of the players that left can be replaced or improved upon - with exception of Champ.
Let's see who's on this team come October and then we can all lose our collective shat if need be!

Show me better players and I'll STFU. So far it's about the same except the new kids have to learn CMA's system. So this is a case of  subtraction by addition; same level of talent coming in with no knowledge of CMA's system. So far I see a wash, maybe.

No one is telling you to STFU... If it makes you feel better to whine and bitch, have at it.
Just don't understand the ad nauseum complaints... It's like we lost a bunch of star players who got us into the tournament that can't be replaced.  These are and were players that were not successful in getting us into the tournament.  Why on earth should we be up in arms about them leaving?

There are 2 guys that I would have liked to stay and that's Williams and Moore.  I believe both have the ability to play at this level, all of the others were mismatched and we saw that pretty much every game.

What part of " this is a very active message board with a lot of members who are really unhappy right now and who use this as an outlet to vent" don't you get???  No one is calling for CMA's head, but there is ample reason to be unhappy. You're not unhappy, or you want to wait before passing judgement, good for you. Some of us don't have your patience and your temperament.

This is a joke right? What am I apologizing to you for? I never said anything about you. If you’re triggered about MY opinion and you care that much, message me.

I'm more optimistic than most on this board right now but I also understand why losing this amount of players at once would be seen as concerning.

I really wish Williams and Earlington had stayed and Dunn came back but if I'm being really honest, I also don't think any of them (yes even Williams) should be starting on a team that wants to win the Big East. I like those guys as a strong bench. I don't think just running this team back with the freshmen added was going to pay off the way some believe it would. I think we COULD win with that team if Champagnie and Posh each leveled up again and started dominating. If that happened though, Earlington and Williams wouldn't be the reason. I'm attached to them because they've been at St John's for 3 seasons and we saw them improve in ways and remember a couple of great games they had but great games were not the norm for them. Those games were special when they happened (Creighton with all the 3's for Williams, Georgetown comeback for Earlington) I remember their "good" games. I think we have a very limited window with Champagnie and Posh and to capitalize on it those guys who left can't be playing 30+ minutes at the other positions. I'm not mad at them for not accepting that and looking around but I think having a mostly open roster to remake the team around the 2 best players (best BY FAR in my mind) is an exciting opportunity.

Also not trying to start rumors but I think it was obvious that Wusu was getting a promotion this season even if these guys didn't leave. He was going to take even more minutes. We all saw how much Anderson used him and how well he played (and yes he was occasionally a mess) for a lightly recruited freshman. He's clearly a part of the core now and these departures cement that even more. Some of these guys leaving makes more sense to me when I look at it that way.

Damn, I just got to work. Have one for me.

Just for the record, I'm 110% Sicilian and I'm from Brooklyn. You guys have any clue how people like me react when someone-especially a stranger-says to "calm down"?  Well I'll tell you; we do just the opposite.

Guinness and Draft:

Since my original post putting the two of you together failed (though I truly do not understand how since it was in fact awesome) - please knock it off with the back and forth.  There's virtually nothing in those posts that relates to the topic of the thread, and they just get in the way of all of the other on-topic posts that are full of angst about our roster turnover.  Take it to PMs, or better yet meet for a beer.

I am pretty sure that when they get out from behind their keyboards, most of our folks are really on the same page (we want the program to succeed) and have more in common than they think.

Thanks, Happy Easter, and have a great weekend,
LMF

Really no need to clarify Monte :)

Agreed. And, that’s why I suggested a message in my last post regarding this. It’s happened with a couple posters before, we messaged, we hashed it out, we were better for it. Cheers.

As I said above I was done with it and told the other guy to say whatever he wants and that I would not reply. And that’s what I did. Your request is fair and will be honored on my end.

Not sure if the guy shared Monte's heritage but I'm having flashbacks to being a dumb teenager and making the mistake of telling a police officer who had (rightfully) pulled me over to "relax." That went extremely poorly for me.
