Robbins - Harkless turning pro

Everyone who is anyone at USC had Matt Barkley packing for the NFL.

In the end he decided that his work at the university had not yet been done and he was returning to see it through.

Here's hoping that Moe sees his situation the same way.

It would be enormously beneficial to both parties concerned.

At least it shows future recruits.. that you can come to St John's and eventually get drafted.. We haven't had that in alonggggggg time.

If you're a stable program coming off a good season, that's fine. You can reload.

If you're in a major rebuilding mode, losing a star freshman sets the program back considerably.

This is not a win-win by any stretch.

I don't think we are in rebuilding mode. We have a ton of talent coming back and Moe plays our deepest position. We just need bodies at this point. Lavin will deliver. Sampson and Obekpa will both be Johnnies.

Either we get the Big East Freshman of the Year to return or we have a first rounder (hopefully) in the NBA after just one season at St. John's with the current staff in the current system. How easy is that to sell to recruits? This is the definition of a win-win situation.

Moe plays our deepest position.
Really?
He played center for almost the entire seson.
He was our tallest player.
As of now, we'll start Gift @ C and Garrett (if he returns) @ PF.
We needed at least 2 post players before Mo's decision.

I meant his natural position. His natural position is SF when he's not playing out of position at PF and, at times, C. We will be adding, at the very least, 6'8 Sampson and 6'9 Obekpa to go with GG. There is no question we need more bigs--and I think we add three players for the PF and C positions--but Moe is a only a SF that can help out up
front. Ideally he wouldn't be playing there next season anyway.

If Moe Harkless keeps his decison to himself, holds a tense press conference and announces he is staying at St. John's for another year he will immortalize himself in local folklore.

It comes down to what Moe really wants. I thought Jay Bilas tweeted something so true a few days ago -- if someone is committed to being a professional basketball player, then you should not fault that person for leaving early. Whether they go in the early first, late first, or even the second round, if a player is convinced that they want to play professionally and will do all that is possible to succeed as a professional, then you can't fault that person for going after their dreams. What Moe needs to really decide is whether he is ready from a maturity standpoint. And if he feels he is at this stage, then we should all wish the best of luck to him and hope he succeeds in the NBA.

Now, from St. John's perspective, this is not a good thing in the short term. Regardless of whether we get Sampson and/or Obekpa, if we lose Harkless it is going to be very hard to take that next step in 2012-'13. It's just almost impossible to replace that kind of talent. But in the long term, this will benefit STJ whenever Harkless chooses to leave -- because it will prove that STJ is capable of elevating players games and sending them to the pros. And the nice part is we have another surefire pro on this team in Harrison, who may need another year or two to refine all aspects of his game, but is definitely on his way.

I think Moe returns after all is said and done. Obviously we are much better with him, but if he leaves we are losing a promising FRESHMAN. Whoever takes his place--probably Amir Garret--will do so with a season under his belt, a summer of working on weaknesses, seven months of working on his body, and a whole summer of picking apart film and running drills. That will help mitigate whatever we might lose with Moe.

With Moe, I think we are Sweet 16 team and a real danger to beat anyone and go a lot further. Without him, we could sell be a tournament if we get some size and depth. It's a setback, but it's not one we can't overcome.

Umm I don't think Amir is going to be spending the whole summer picking apart film and running drills. Anybody who thinks that mo leaving is good news for the program is flat out delusional. It will hurt recruiting this year and will all but ensure another losing season. Even with mo back next year we were no lock for the ncaas. I am so sick of posters pretending that the chain of disastrous news weve received is a positive.

I think, if he declares, he will be drafted somewhere between 15-20. If he falls in this area, he's making a good call. It's easy to sit here and say he's making a mistake. Who are we to know what's best for him. None of us are NBA scouts ( maybe Bobre, who knows) or in his inner circle.

I wish him much success and hope he has a long and lucrative NBA career, if that is the route he chooses.

Yeah I got it first hand months ago from two terrific sources but things can always change so I had hope. The collapse of the class and playing out of position seem to be the key factors. If the team had come together he might have stayed but he was always going in the first round either way. He is a draft no-brainer.

I don't think we are in rebuilding mode.

Come on.

13-19 with six scholarship players, only one recruit signed, a coach who sat out a year and now a star player possibly leaving.

What else could you possibly call this?

U can't be SERIOUS.. ... get back to me when Lav reels in another STELLAR class & we are in the top 15 by January.. B)

And they all lived happily ever after. Seriously, 13 wins without Moe may be a pipe dream right now. I'll keep reading but my patience with this program is really running thin. Time for Lavin to save the day if he can. WE NEED PLAYERS!!!

You are an idiot. I never said it was "good news." I want him back for sure, but if he leaves we are not in trouble. We have a great nucleus and Lavin can go to down in recruiting after putting Moe in the NBA after just a season with the current staff in the current system.

Go back to your Providence board and cheer for the ugliest coach that has ever walked the sidelines.

To put things in perspective here is Kawhi Leonard who was picked 15th in the draft last year.

http://www.spotrac.com/nba/san-antonio-spurs/kawhi-leonard/

Money wise 2013 would be the year to come out, not much different between 2011 and 2012.

And if he tears his knee up vs. NJIT next year...........

Ofher than Cal at Kentucky, few coaches push their developing players early unless they are first round picks. If more players come out and more foreign players get drafted, and Moe moves to the 2nd round, he is screwed....knee or no knee.
Getting back to SJ....the team....without Moe, next year may be as bad as this year unless Lav brings in the class he is promising.

Currently NBADraft.net has only 1 foreign player in the 1st round.
That's why these services are a joke. Better to ask Fran Frachilla.

He's no SF in my eyes.
Too slow, not enough handle and limited range.
PF?
Sure.
He's an animal on the boards and a terrific shot blocker.
We just lost our only legitimate inside player.
Next season looks bleak at best.
And to all those hoping he has a change of heart, I just don't see it.
Wish him the best but it's been a tough 12 months, starting with DJ's injury.

Marillac, unfortunately the only drills Amir will be running this summer will be baseball drills. Let's hope he gets thru the summer without injury as we will need him next season for sure.

Assuming Mo leaves it seems we are on a treadmill. As soon as we seem to make progress, somebody leaves the program. Lavin will have to get his STELLAR recruiting class to make up for the loss of MO. We will need 3 bigs instead of 2.

You guys have the same three responses to anyone who doesn't share your niave Disney world view. A. Call the poster a bad name. B. suggest that the poster is a troll or C. Beg the moderator that the poster be banned. Some of you on this board obviously don't like reality. This has been a disastrous year and other than some cryptic tweets from lavin there is no good news on the horizon. Even with a top 10 recruiting class and I don't see how thats possible Next year is another rebuilding job.

But then again maybe you're right -- I'm a providence fan, lavin is infallible and Amir Garrett, after studying tape and running drills in his off hours while playing baseball full time this summer will lead us to the promise land.

I agree, 'north. Add Morris into that equation and you have major potential. I guess we're gonna have to wait another month or two to see what transpires.

Mjd I just threw those 4 names out there as they are names that have been floated on this board for a long time but it could be any 3-4 star players provided there are at least 2 bigs in that group. I have great faith in the coach but right now the great class is just a dream.

I believe you will get that class with Morris and two more players.

Morris signing with us will probably boost him into the top 100 in the final rankings.
