Robbins - Harkless turning pro

Best of luck Moe. Hope he gets picked in the lottery. Guy has a lot of potential to be a great SF/PF. Reminds me of Wilson Chandler/Paul George coming out.

If Mo really is going to the NBA this year I'm surprised by his decision and I think its a mistake on his and his family's part. He's spent years working to become an NBA Player. He has the potential to be an excellent pro with a long and successful career. But I think he risks a lot of that by not just waiting and working for it one more year. He's not physically ready for the NBA and his game is not quite there yet. One more year in the BE and I truly believe he'll be a lottery pick and will be NBA ready. If he comes out now he risks floundering and either riding the pine or, God forbid ending up in the NBDL.  I know he's dedicated and would fight through it but not getting off to a good start can turn a possibly very successful career into a marginal journeyman. Did he work all these years and come this far to run that risk? I hope he's considering that risk and that he decides to play another year in the BE and cement his future.

“Even if he gets picked at the bottom of the first round,’’ one source told The Post, “he wants to start the clock.’’

“We haven’t had a real detailed conversation about everything,’’ his advisor, Nate Blue, told The Post in a text. “Until then the decision hasn’t been made.’’

If Mo's mind is made up then I wish him the best in the world in pursuing an NBA career. From what I can see, even as a first round pick there is a cause for concern. If the information I'm reading is correct, the 25th-30th pick in the first round  will sign a 4 year contract with 2 years guaranteed at a range of 850K-925K for year one, and 889-966K for year two.

I know that seems to be an enormous amount of money and most of us here will never earn that much in a single year.

However, even using the upper limits (25th pick), you gross $1.9 million, and of that, about 45% goes to state and federal taxes. Don't get me wrong, two years netting 800 or 900K is a nice way to start off in life, in no way does it make you rich. Throw down 200-300K to buy a house, 100K for an Escalade or Mercedes, etc. Even if drafted in the first round, if he is not ready for the NBA, he could be two and out, and 5 years from now living a modest lifestyle could exahaust the remainder.

Not wishing failure on him, but if as many suggested, waiting a year could catapult him into the lottery, the 7th pick in the 2013-2014 season will earn 2.4 and 2.5 million the first two years, and the likelihood that a lottery pick's career extends beyond 2 seasons far greater.

So, to me at least, looking at would likely be 5 million the first two years as a lottery pick is far better than the 4 year salary of a 25-30th pick (less than $4 million for four years).

I know that nearly 2 million gross is nothing to sneeze at, but it's not going to set you up for life.

Fwiw Nate blue called Lenn Robbins out on twitter last night basically calling him a bs artist. Said it is not true and that moe hasn't made a decision, said that Lenn will be the first guy to spin it the other way if Moe stays and that he's questioning whether he will deal with Robbins in the future. Took Lenn to task.

Regardless of what Moe chooses. We will be fine as a team for the foreseeable future. Sending kids to the pros is exactly what we want to do and it will bring talent to SJU. It's a win-win for SJU overall, even if we do lose some good talent a bit sooner than we like.

Beast, you're right on the money $$$ ha ha !

Presently, I'm in the camp that says he does not have the skills to succeed professionally. Obviously he will if his career is carefully planned.

.

Mo,give your body and brain a chance to rise to the challenge. The challenge of a grueling pro schedule and everyday punishing physical contact against monster bodies can be overwhelming.

Mo, you will be the star of a terrific team next year. The darling of Madison Square Garden.

Stay another year,, have fun, learn the game much more, hone your body and give yourself a muchbetter chance to be a successful pro.

As Beast pointed out , another year here is the smart money investment. In addition, staying and playing here probably will be one of the most enjoyable years of your life. It will be something you will truly treasure.

Mel Brooks said, " It's good to be the king.". Well Mo, It's not too shabby to be the darling of the Big Apple.

I just wonder how much the Knicks would shell out for a hometown kid who has become a high first round lottery pick.

Mo, when you chose us over Connecticut, you showed that you took control of your own destiny. That was a great and brave decision. Now let's go 2 for 2.

Don't be impatient, invest another year in college. It will be another one of those long term investments that will really pay off.

Couldn't disagree more.

The negatives of a star freshman leaving a struggling program early far outweigh any positives with putting a player in the NBA. See Georgia Tech the last 10 years.

Moe is not simply "good talent." He's the best player I've seen wear Red since Sealy. Who among our potential recruits or returning players can come close to replacing him? Jakarr Sampson is a terrific player. Does he look anywhere near as polished as Moe?

Walter Berry stays another year and we're in the hunt for a national championship in '87. Ron Artest stays another year and we're in the hunt for a national championship in 2000.

If Moe stays another year, we're a bubble team, possibly more. Without him, it's another long season.

Anyone consider that he is staying and these rumors are being leaked on purpose?

It reminds recruits that St. John's players go to the NBA and it keeps our name out there in the media during a time when all our rivals are making headlines in the NCAAs.

It's a possibility (said with fingers crossed) and not a terrible idea.

I do agree with you that Moe is the best we have had in awhile... but i agree with MCN that him going ( and getting drafted high hopefully) is the best we can hope for.. Forget positives and negatives... it's what the kid wants either way.. If he is going to go, then so be it.. At least it shows future recruits.. that you can come to St John's and eventually get drafted.. We haven't had that in alonggggggg time.

Moe will cost himself millions by declaring this year. Take out an insurance policy (I believe the school is allowed to pay for it) for a few mill so you are covered if you are injured, and come back to develop into a lottery pick. It's much harder to develop at the end of an NBA bench. He might add five or more years to his NBA career by staying another year or two at STJ. His stock will likely cool off a bit as scouts look next to kids like Quincy Miller and the physically ready upperclassman at his position.

With that said, if Moe decides to go pro, I wish him the best of luck! He was NYC's best player and he chose and stayed committed to St. John's. I know I'll never forget that and will root for Moe for the rest of my life in whatever he does. That is what St. John's fans do...we aren't like UK fans who blast kids for leaving early. I hope he goes as high as possible. This is a win-win for Lavin and St. John's. Either Moe comes back and we are nasty, or Lavin can say he and his staff turned a kid that wasn't even a top 40 recruit into a first round pick in one year...that his system highlights their talents to NBA coaches.

If you're a stable program coming off a good season, that's fine. You can reload.

If you're in a major rebuilding mode, losing a star freshman sets the program back considerably.

This is not a win-win by any stretch.

I don't think we are in rebuilding mode. We have a ton of talent coming back and Moe plays our deepest position. We just need bodies at this point. Lavin will deliver. Sampson and Obekpa will both be Johnnies.

Either we get the Big East Freshman of the Year to return or we have a first rounder (hopefully) in the NBA after just one season at St. John's with the current staff in the current system. How easy is that to sell to recruits? This is the definition of a win-win situation.

Yea.. but what are you gonna do? Wanting him to stay is just a selfish way to look at it. If he does go .. we should all hope he gets drafted really high and prospers in the league.. When it's out of our hands, thats the only " win " we could hope for.

I don't think we are in rebuilding mode.

Come on.

13-19 with six scholarship players, only one recruit signed, a coach who sat out a year and now a star player possibly leaving.

What else could you possibly call this?

Really?
He played center for almost the entire seson.
He was our tallest player.
As of now, we'll start Gift @ C and Garrett (if he returns) @ PF.
We needed at least 2 post players before Mo's decision.

U can't be SERIOUS.. ... get back to me when Lav reels in another STELLAR class & we are in the top 15 by January.. B)

Is insurance against career-ending injury available? I have vague memory of this being done with underclassmen who stayed back in the day.

Lenn seems to only care about getting the scoop first and not about if it is right or wrong.

To my mind Moe is not quite there yet in terms of his body, his mind set and his overall game out from under the basket. One more year in college would be a wise investment in both his short and long term future as a pro.
