RIP Coach Carnesecca

My senior year of high school, 1965. Coach Lapchick's last game was the NIT championship ahen we beat Villanova with Jim Washington, Bill Melchionni, and George Leftwich. St Johns had Jerry Houston, the McIntyre brothers and Sonny Dove. I was there in the old Madison Square Garden on 50th Street.

Those were the days.
I was there too. My first year at St. John's was in September, 1965.

yes. another 1965 hs graduate. mater christi.
as per the recruiting gurus, 1965 was the best class in the history of redmen/red fans.

I started to follow SJU in the 63/64 season.
I sat right behind the SJU bench. thanks to a friend in an SJU fraternity.
it was the magical season of 64/65 that cemented my SJU loyalty.
I was there for both the holiday festival and the nit wins.

sonny dove. IMVHO - is on the SJU mount rushmore - post 1964.
along with #20, walter. ,and malik.

I was a '65 SJU grad and the Brooklyn campus news sports reporter in '64 and 65.
Joe Lapchick was a great coach and greater human being. During my preseason '64/'65 interview we passed Lou in the hall and Coach Lapchick said this is the guy who does all the work getting the team ready. I just have to show up for the game. The '64/'65 team had some great victories that included beating #1 ranked Michigan for the Holiday Festival title and Boston College and Villanova in the NIT,

As evidenced by my screen name here, first game for me was the NIT in 1965 against BC, 10 years old, with my brother a freshman at SJU and my father. Still have the program, maybe the ticket stub. Because I'm a hoarder of certain things. :)

Any of you ‘65 hs grads from Molloy? I didn’t attend the NIT game but watched on TV. I remember my introduction to St. John’s was an assembly in Alumni Hall when the presenter told us to look to our left and right and said that only one of the three of you will graduate from here in four years. I felt sorry for those other two.
Another 65 Molloy grad here!

I did not graduate from Molloy. I graduated from HS in 1965 from Stamford, CT. The 1965 NIT Championship game really turned me onto Johnnies Basketball.

I sometimes wonder how we would have done in 85 vs. Georgetown if George Johnson was the other forward rather than Willie Glass. Johnson always seemed to come up big in crunch time.

No disrespect to Glass but Johnson was that good.
He was great and probably the most under appreciated star we have had (at least post career)…when he was here, we knew what we had
