RIP Coach Carnesecca

I thought it was Ed Searcy who had to wear all the sox. Either way, it's a good story.
I suspect they both wore several pairs of socks. I'm a contemporary of Searcy (born the same year) and I remember it was popular to wear a couple of pairs of sweatsocks in the late 60s early 70s even if you played and couldn't jump a lick like me lol.

George Johnson fierce inside.
David Russell our Luke Skywalker jump out of the gym
Billy Goodwin, our glue guy, guy every winning team needs
Willie Glass, another Skywalker, like Russell, but Russell more well rounded game, Glass boy could he sky for rebounds, put backs, alley ops, and dunks, move him 10 feet away from the basket not so much.
Agree on Glass, but that was even more the case with Bruin. He was two years behind me and we were both Astoria/LIC kids and we all knew his game. No finesse at all, tremendous leaper, but if you could keep him away from the rim (big if, for us, but less so at D1 college) he was done. Russell could do everything Bruin could do and also had a baseline jumper that Bruin could only dream about.

Without being around to watch Glass or Goodwin, just providing the numbers.

Here are their averages over their final two years at SJU.

Goodwin: 14.3 pts, 5.2 rebs, 3.3 asts, .2 blks, 1.2 stls, 49% fg, 75% FT%

Glass: 14.95 pts, 5.7 rebs, 1.6 asts, 1.4 blks, .9 stls, 51% fg, 66% FT%

As with everything I'm sure numbers don't tell the whole story, but doesn't seem like a cut and dry choice to me.

The story was that Willie and James Worthy were cousins but it turned out that Willie himself said they were good friends who everyone thought were cousins.

BTW Willie is my all-time favorite Johnny and it is not even close. I have a Glass jersey i wear to every SJU game
Willie had family in NC and would visit there in the summers of his youth.

Saw them both play and they are very similar in production. I think Willie was the better athlete. Ironically both of them stood on the basket at MSG after winning a Big East championship

I had the pleasure of having lunch with Willie, Walter and others at the post Mass luncheon. In that ECAC game, MJ went Christmas shopping in NYC and was late to UNC’s pregame meal. As punishment, Dean Smith sat MJ a minute for every minute he was late. That’s why he crushed us in the second half. Willie and MJ were not related at all.
Who did Willie room with in his days at SJU?

Goodwin was the 3rd option behind Mullin and Russell his last two years.

Glass was the 3rd option his junior year behind Berry and Rowan and he and Jackson were options 1 or 2 his last year.

Having seen both, I stand by my earlier opinion.

Thank you! It was Worthy I had heard instead of Jordan. Mixed them up. Funny too how Willie got drafted by Lakers. (I think)

Goodwin was a very good ball handler and had excellent court vision. Jack of all trades, master of none.

Willie was the best athlete we've seen here. He came in here with an upperclassman's body. Strong as the Hulk, could leap like Spiderman, but shot like Daredevil and dribbled like Galactus.

Willie wasn't a guy who could create his own shot. He was often set up by his classmate, Mark Jackson, the best we've ever had at setting other guys up.

Thanks MM. What was the story with Goodwin missing his fresh year? Juco?

Met Tom Weadocks son when I was in an ambulance last year. Small world :)

Delaware, I stand corrected. Your memory is better than mine. It was Ed Searcy who wore 7 pairs of socks while playing at St. John's.
"He (Ed Searcy) decided to return home, and this time, stay local by attending St John's University (he was also known for wearing 7 pairs of socks while at SJU!).Apr 27, 2012."

Mel Davis wore 6 pairs of socks while playing for the Knicks and Nets.
"Mel Davis, a forward for the Knicks and the Nets in the 1970s, was known to throw on six pairs — six!Dec 20, 2022."

I remember the Searcy socks story. So, does that mean Ed was really 6'4?

Have no idea where I pulled that one from. I just walked downstairs to ask my wife something, and completely forgot what it was. Go figure. 😊

I remember at the end of a 25 point blowout of Syracuse (100-75?) the crowd changed "Wea-Dock, Wea-Dock" until Louie put him in.
