Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Jack I get what you're saying, but Posh was a very mixed bag this season. In a lot of ways. Let's not compare him to, say, Soriano, who was all in and left it all on the court every single game. If he's all in with whatever Rick wants, then fine. Welcome back. If he's not, thanks for everything and good luck in the future.
He had a bad year. But what’s wrong with looking at the whole package with Posh? He was great year 1 and pretty damn good year 2 as well. Rough year 3, but why does that season define posh completely. I get it’s most recent… but

I remember Sir Dominic Pointer being lost his junior year. The team had too many moving parts and he couldn’t find his way. Year 4 the rotation shortened and he locked into his role. ..

I just don’t think year 3 defines posh that’s all. With a better coach… with the best college coach there is, posh could lock into his role and kick ass

It wasn't just his production that I'm talking about. Again, Im not gonna bad mouth the kid and I want him back, but let's not act like there weren't concerns about him throughout the season. So, if he's all in with how Rick plans on using him then great. If not, that's ok too.

My summary of the Posh debate.
Two main negatives:
1. We presume that his overall demeanor toward Coach Anderson was disrespectful and such was reported to Pitino.
2. His "game" this year deteriorated with more turnovers, poor shooting, and overall reduced effectiveness.

On the other side :
1. his intensity, will to win, potential to generate opponent turnovers, and court awareness are all characteristics Pitino would appreciate..
2. A major causative factor for the negatives above was the cumulative frustration of adjusting/dealing with Anderson's support of
Curbelo's "style", Anderson's own communication inadequacies...and Posh having to play "out of position" all season until the last few weeks..

Likely Result: Posh and Pitino will meet and discuss above. IF Posh admits to his own failings above, commits to acting as a senior leader and to giving his best physically and mentally/emotionally, Pitino will agree to keep him. However, Pitino will reiterate that he wants shooting excellence. If he stays, Therefore, Posh's role will likely be off the bench as a backup point. If Posh can accept that, I think Pitino will see the competitive fire in him and let him stay if he wishes.

I’m not as well versed as others on here are when it comes to the off the court issues with the team this year.

I’ve heard rumblings about posh this season, but my opinion pretty much exclusively deals with what I think he could give us on the court if he’s retained and buys in

I agree with all you're saying except a guarantee of "shooting excellence". The best Posh can do is guarantee Rick that he'll put in the work.

All the above criticisms of Posh’s deficiencies are valid. It will come down to Pitino’s willingness to accentuate the positives in his game while eliminating the negatives. If coach chooses not to, then we move on. But what we are not going to do is constantly rip a kid that has left it all on the court for 3 years.

There are small handful of posters who are ripping the kid, which is completely uncalled for. But most of the comments have been respectful of Posh, even if some are critical of his game.

Marquis nowell averages 3.7 TO’s this year. Posh averages 2.9.
Might not be a fair comparison. Nowell has the ball in his hands all the time. Posh actually didn’t play PG all that much - as we’ve discussed ad nauseum, he played off the ball way too much. If he played typical starting PG minutes and was the primary ball handler, I’m guessing his TO numbers would have been much worse.

Unlike Soriano it looked to me like Posh got a little doughy. I wonder if he slacks off in the weight room

Wasnt so much to compare exact situations just that many good pgs have high TO numbers. Peyton siva for Rick had seasons of 2.9, 3.4 and 2.7.

Believe me, I'm giddy Rick Pitino is our coach and a new winning mantra has begun at St. John's.
That said, I watched today's Sweet Sixteen games and 'it hit me' how much ground the program has to regain to once again vie with the best teams in college hoops.
It won't be easy, as a few posters have said, but it begins with leadership.
We'll never have the most $$$'s, but I think we have the best coach, at the margin, in college basketball to lead us to new heights.
Let the games begin.

I'm not saying it will or won't be easy, but a lotta ground can be quickly made up in today's college game. I look for us to create some noise next season. How much noise we make is to be determined. But I see us as being a player next season.

Drissa Traore was epitome of a great teammate, rooting from bench all season. Just surprised that Pitino kept him given he only played 49 min total in 14 games, and 15 of them were in the blowout loss to Xavier.

Either Macon went to bat for him, or it was to keep an in at LuHi.

Hope Pitino can improve his game over time. He was a 3 star out of HS.

It might be as simple as someone needs to be the last guy on the bench. Might as well be a kid who excelled in the intangible department.

i don't want to badmouth any of the kids, but there were plenty of times this past season that we questioned whether or not kids were listening to CMA, and why some had such bad body language. Say what you want about CMA, but if a kid isn't going to listen to him, and/or is gonna sulk when he doesn't get what he wants, then he's capable of doing that with any coach. None of these kids are make or break players, Rick does not need to deal with any kid who isn't going to buy in 100%.

What if what they wanted was coaching. Thereinlies the conundrum. 😉

The 2 years Posh did have the ball most of the time he averaged under 2.5 tos per game.
