Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

I find it odd how we are trying to tell a hall of fame coach how to plan his roster for the upcoming year. I think Pitino has a firm grasp on the type of player he wants both physical attributes and the mental aspect for his type of team that he coaches. I know its just opinions etc and this is a message board to speak our minds, but the way some people are saying he should do this and that is out of our league. I like almost every player that donns the st johns jersey every year but based on this year it doesn't mean they need to be on the team this year if Pitino doesn't think they fit for him. I wish all those players well who leave and will be rooting for the ones that join.

I say let the man do his job and hopefully we wont be criticizing his moves and we will be rejoicing as we only have in such a distant past. But then again, thats my opinion and we all have those lol.

So to each his own.

Lets go johhnies/redmen/redstorm!!
As a supporting caveat to your screed, does anyone tell their doctor how to do his/her job? ;)

Pitino's handling of the roster was a topic of convo on First Take.

Like i said on another thread, I'm cool he wants to bring in his type of guy, i'm just not happy with the way it's being handled in the public. It's a reality show at the moment.

I wish he would talk to the guys, and just get it over with in one day.

Beauty of a "Campus" talk----, if that is what makes a champion, Peperdine would be number 1 year in year out, it's gorgeous, perched on a mountain overlooking Malibu and the Pacific Coast Highway, and all the waves (and girls).
That is a wild location, I couldn't believe it. I don't know how anyone graduates from there I would never go inside to class.

I find this post highly offensive and I am PM’ing Paul because I am in dire need of a safe space, fully equipped with an espresso machine, freshly baked panettone, and the call of Bobby Nystrom’s OT goal to clinch the Islanders first Stanley Cup in 1980 played on a loop.

How dare you say we cannot give our expert advice to a hall of fame coach while sitting on a recliner and wearing our socks and sandals (old school dad style).

We are…
I’ve seen a lot of kids wearing socks with sandals these days too!! Lol

I understand your anxiety and respect your opinion however to quicken the pace of interviews would not be fair to the players. He wants to sit down with each team member and find out who they are and if they are going to fit into his program somehow. I think that he's just trying to be fair to the kids and show that he respects them and their futures. That can not be done quickly. He professed that a lot of players are not going to be here because of his original survey of the team members which he did not see fitting into his style of play.

Player’s family members may come into play too which could affect scheduling.

sure. but if he was so certain at the press conference that half the team needs to go, then he knows in his mind who they are. he even questioned the character of players. just pull the plug. i highly doubt Pitino is going into those player conversations with a 'let me know why you think you should stay' mentality.

Timing also includes salary negotiations for any players being considered to stay who have interest in returning.
I apologize if previously reported… What are the options for Curbelo and Jones if they are not retained? My understanding is, absent a waiver, they are not permitted to transfer again without sitting out a year. Can they enter the portal, or is it go pro or sit out?

Idk if this is jest or not but for all we know Pitino was given a “budget” to fill his roster.

Maybe he knows he has certain # of 6 figure NIL spots and a certain number of good but not great spots and a few lesser ones. Figuring out what to use and what guys on the team might be ok with could take some some. Of course “salary” or recruiting budget talk is not what a lot of people will want to hear.

oh. wow. i have no clue how this stuff works.

i reallly thought the school had nothing to do with money and deals. that it was left to the players to connect with the middle man, in our case Storm Marketing, and get the deals through them.

are you saying that Coaches then are the ones to make the offers?

Yes NIL is supposed to be out of the coaches hands, but I know we are not all that naive.

Not saying Rick or other coaches go and deliver the check personally, but they are certainly in the know about what their “people” or in our case “Repole” can get them.

I was being serious. I would think Rick knows his budget for the coming year and has a plan on how to use it. On the other hand, any players he has interest in will have to weigh that salary versus what they think they can get in the open market. Just one more additional wrinkle that didn't use to (according to NCAA bylaws) exist. Of course, depending on how cynically we want to look at it maybe nothing has really changed.

This is a message board. On a message board fans voice opinions. Our opinions have absolutely zero impact on the decisions RP will make regarding who stays, who goes and the ultimate make up of the roster. So when some of you guys say something along lines of "let Rick do his job", I have to crack up. Would you say the same to sports talk show hosts? I may vehemently disagree with what some of you have to say, but I'll always defend your right to say it.
