Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Not to stir some stuff up but....

Trilly did his first hot seat update of the season and put Pitino in the "Retirement Watch" section for the first time ever. When someone asked him about it he said "had an NYC source reach out this morning saying to keep an eye on it. completely unsolicited."

Could be absolutely nothing to it, could be a little something there. Pitino's era of coaches are dropping like flies because of the portal and NIL. Pitino definitely isn't a fan of having a mostly new roster every season and I'm sure this Deivon Smith thing isn't helping much either. Pitino has basically said he'll keep coaching for as long as he can but we'll see.

Just my personal opinion without any insider knowledge, but I don't think there is anything holding Pitino here one year to the next. Would not be surprised to see him walk away at any point. After all, most of his hall of Fame peers have after becoming fed up with his modern game.

''Deivon Smith thing isn't helping much either.'' I'd say he brought that on himself.

In Peacock pregame, he noted evaluating at end of each year
Watching the interview now, I feel fine about it. He said how the portal and NIL doesn't bother him, and how now fundraising for NIL/speechmaking for $$$ is now part of the job, before going into a *generalized comment* how every coach has to see if they still love their job/what they do at the end of every year. Kinda watched it as a wink wink to some of the STJ boosters to give more money

if we don’t make the tournament this year with this roster , I can see Pitino packing it in and Junior taking over.

Hope not for a few years but feel like Steve Masiello would more likely be next coach here vs. PItino Jr. or another coach at same level as Jr

A lot will hinge on how we do. If we win I can see this being nothing but a lateral quickness moment.

If we sputter and miss the dance or barely get in I can easily see him following his other contemporaries who have called it quits in recent years (K, Roy, Jim, etc). Now the younger guys (Jay and Tony B) are also saying its enough. Again I think it all hinges on how we do. Winning cures all. But its still not the game he's coached for how many years.

Spot on post

I think we all gotta take a huge deep breath. Last year was an enormous coaching challenge with no continuity, no team chemistry, and pieces that very clearly didn’t fit his style. Yet, the team was trending UPWARDS by mid-February.

If he was someone who is losing his touch with players, you’d expect the opposite result.

I do think Moose is spot on, and I don’t think we should expect linear progress as a default. But I really don’t think we should be reading into player body language against Harvard, and whatever this Smith thing is (who had very good body language!!!), into anything. Also, if the team was in such tatters, I don’t think they’d be pumping up Glover so much pregame.

Pitino’s got a huge ego, and I also think he loves coaching & learning. He’s 73, of course he should be on retirement watch. But if he’s winning, I don’t see it happening.

On your first paragraph, that is going to be closer to the norm going forward than anything else. After this season he’s going to again have to replace his best players and I’m sure what happened this past spring with Cliff and Omier doesn’t sit well for him when he’s thinking about who he’ll target

But this year, we retained every player he wanted. Hes apparently so bullish on retention this year, we aren’t even recruiting high school seniors this cycle. And based on everything he’s talked about with this team, it’s very obvious he enjoys this team more than last.

I remember like 15 years ago he was talking potential retirement in life 5 or 6 years. Then whatever year he was out at Louisville he wrote a book I think and he said he was retired and not going to coach again.

And yet here we are. My ex partner at work was talking eventually retiring when we became partners in beginning of 1996 he was 59.That was one of the reasons why we partnered. He never retired. Passed away at 84 still working in 2020

I take this stuff with a grain of salt. Can't control the uncontrollable
