Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Per Roger Rubin

“Pitino put it on the captains and players to advise Smith and each other to avoid bad decisions and "be selfless." He told them "your locker room has to be great.... you handle any any problems off the court. Make sure that they don't run into into your ability to win." #sjubb”

Very smart. Always let the players police themselves until you get to the point where that doesn't work or it can't be deferred. Best chance of nipping something in the bud early.

If Pitino decided to let the players handle it, which I support wholeheartedly, he should have let them handle it and not let it go public.
Let me edit that last comment because I don’t know how it got it but he should limited his comments to the press to “No comment, the players are handling it internally.”
Frankly, liking the guy less and less.

I agree in principle and criticized him harshly last year for throwing his players under the bus, but in this instance I thought he handled it the way he should. It was obvious the "I wanted more shooting" thing was BS and Smith not being in the game quite frankly cost us the game. He could either stick with that and look like a fool or admit what happened. He didn't go into detail about what happened (and btw there was an allusion to something that happened after the game as well; didn't somebody here say there was incident on or getting on the bus?). He just acknowledged it happened and moved on. Not terrible IMO.

That's a lot better than last year's "Hey we recruited these guys in a rush and they're not very good but its the best we could do on short notice" presser. That was brutal.

Sorry, not the way a classy coach handles it, just my opinion. So because Pitino chose to make a fool of himself with his “more shooting” BS, he can then throw a player under the bus so HE can save face, disagree.

It has nothing to do with feeling bad for the player, it is just not the way it should be done if the player's are “handling it” because they are absolutely NOT when the coach is discussing it with the media, just more Pitino BS as far as I am concerned.
All I know is we brought Pitino in to win and figure stuff like this out. I see , Pat Kelsey at Louisville, DeVries at West Virginia, Porter Moser at Oklahoma, all relatively new coaches at big programs winning big OOC games and were losing big OOC games and dealing with crap like this. Pitino better figure out this team and the rest of this ridiculousness quick. That’s what he’s getting paid for.

Figure it out? He’s causing a lot of it 😉🤪

This is Porter Moser's 4th season at Oklahoma. He's yet to make the tournament or have a winning conference record there despite them making 4 straight tournaments and 8 of 9 in the years before he got there.

When Pitino was hired many on here acted like that was an end, decades of problems solved, when in reality, of course, it was a beginning. I and certainly others, in so many words, cautioned that, raised some flags and concerns last year about substitution patterns, lack of defined roles, etc.
Pitino’s strength was in building continuity in programs, putting in place a definite learning curve that was built on year over year. So the first year was brandy new players, put together in an extraordinary short span of time, and he certainly deserved a pass.
But again, reality, he has little continuity from last year, most recently starting 4 new players, with no defined point guard and, IMO, a not surprising fallout of that, seemingly a very undefined offensive approach. His use of an out of shape, (his words, not mine), ineffective for a large part, Richmond down the stretch of key games, while gluing a more effective Smith to the bench is extremely puzzling to say the least.
Very few players can develop without defined playing time and Pitino’s vaunted, and deserved, strength is in player development, which the current CBB environment and Pitino’s age both seriously work against happening. I am not arguing that Wilcher and Dunlap primarily, but also Glover, Prey and Lefty, should get more time, but I am arguing that those circumstances mentioned potentially work against getting the “best” Pitino and instead SJU is getting a coach working with a hand tied behind his back.
Certainly this year is far, far from over, but in my mind there are real red flags and while I have been critical of what I have seen, I don’t think the “sky is falling” but I also don’t remotely prescribe to the “we’re good, we’ll be fine” notion either. As we all know, that’s why they play the games.

We brought Pitino here to win, end of story. We all knew the baggage that would come along with him. Nobody would ever confuse him for a class act. But he's a Hall of Fame coach who has won wherever he has been, and if he wins here the drama will be forgotten.

So we should all not comment until we see if he wins? I know you are not saying that but that is what is implied; my feeling is if people don’t want to discuss as I call it the “here and now” why do you come on the site? And that is very much a generic question because I don’t understand the plethora of comments with the same implications.

Yeah, that's totally not what I'm saying at all. You are free to comment and call him out when it's warranted. There are plenty of examples when it has been including recently.

All I'm saying is in the grand scheme of things, this is what I expected so Im not surprised. All I really care about is him winning here (and not breaking the rules while doing so).
