Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

Yeah, that's totally not what I'm saying at all. You are free to comment and call him out when it's warranted. There are plenty of examples when it has been including recently.

All I'm saying is in the grand scheme of things, this is what I expected so Im not surprised. All I really care about is him winning here (and not breaking the rules while doing so).
I hear you, your first sentence in the second paragraph puts it in the perspective you meant for me, which as I have read many posts by you, if I may plagiarize, I’m not surprised.

I’m having a hard time figuring out what was wanted from Pitino here. There were issues during the Georgia game. People who were there saw them with their own eyes. After the game Pitino blandly mentioned “needing shooting” trying to keep things in house. Afterwards both on Twitter, and even here, some of what transpired with Smith and Pitino was brought public by “fans.” At that point how does Pitino not address it at all, when Zach and Roger Rubin do their jobs and ask?

I agree that overall part of the Pitino experience is that he loves a live microphone too much. But I thought his hand was forced this week.

Basic problem is that when you have two point guards you done have one.

Kadary hasn’t figured out how he fits in yet, Smith didn’t come here to defer, and Wilcher was promised things he hasn’t gotten. When you win, things can work out. With 2 very rough losses, issues get exposed.

(and I still wish that when Smith had the ball with 40 seconds up 4 against Baylor he hadn’t rushed it up court to Zuby but just dribbled it up himself to take time off the clock and draw a foul.)

So we should all not comment until we see if he wins? I know you are not saying that but that is what is implied; my feeling is if people don’t want to discuss as I call it the “here and now” why do you come on the site? And that is very much a generic question because I don’t understand the plethora of comments with the same implications.

And I still wish pitino hadn't gotten the ball in Zuby's hands to shoot free throws with 3 seconds remaining. Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

Even if this is true, what would have been wrong by saying “No comment, being handled internally”?
His hand wasn’t forced to bare all, he chose to.

I feel the same way you do in the last paragraph. Then with the pass being made, if Zuby had just caught and held it or dribbled back toward mid court and passed it to a guard instead of taking it to the hoop (if it was going to be an uncontested layup it’s one thing but it wasn’t going to be). In that situation, the clock is your friend.

There are Yankee fans who would love to have Boone “throw guys under the bus” instead of his normal bland comments which at their harshest would be “it's being addressed internally.”

Different strokes for different folks and sometimes different approaches due to different circumstances.

Nip the problem or situation right away and then move on. If you can’t do both, more problems are going to rise and your season could wind up in jeopardy.

Here's the thing. Rick keeps talking about the challenge of melding new parts together in the NIL world. But unless you are going the Shaka Smart route, virtually every DIV 1 coach has that challenge. So not sure it works as an excuse.
Not an excuse but for a guy who is accustomed to teaching basketball 101, then basketball 102, then challenging for championships when his students matriculating, it must be difficult to realize you will forever be teaching basketball 101 each season in the NIL world.

The formula of signing 5 or 6 super blue chips who may be 1 and done works only if you have $7-10 million of NIL to spread around. Here Rick sells $250k NIL deals to players who can get $50k more elsewhere. I appreciate the tremendous NIL backers who have upped our NIL into the $3mm range, but clearly as good as that is, the table is so tilted that we have to have things break right to put us among the super elite programs. Is it any wonder that football schools with huge NIL budgets are rising among the best programs and the rest only have anecdotal success?

How do schools like Marquette, Creighton & Gonzaga fit into that analysis? Sorry Beast, but it just an excuse imho. Yes, it's harder for all basketball private schools, but it is clearly doable.

Jesuit schools in general (all 3 are jesuit) have much wealthier donors than Vincentian schools. Add that to the fact that success is empirical and all three schools see the ncaa tournament and national rankings consistently.

Beast, just doesn't fly for me. There is always an excuse, but we brought Rick here to do what McDermott did for Creighton and Few did for Gonzaga. It's not like they had eons of winning before those guys came. If it was only about donors, UCLA would still be in the final four every ear.

I know the differences between Vincentian and Jesuit but why would that difference in philosophy trickle down to the donors. The donors are the donors. I think it more has to do with a grad or fans experience at the school or with the school over the years.

Good points. Speaking of two point guards, when Smith has the ball in his hand, Kadary is not that effective as he is a poor shooting shooting guard and his strength is in creating and going to the basket.

Mike Anderson found out the hard way what it’s like to try to play two strong willed point guards which, with Curbelo’s behavior, helped ultimate lead to his demise.

Up here, Boston College has someport filthy rich alumni and they've gone all in on football, which is all they really care about. Hired themselves a prominent head coach and signed a boat load of portal kids. Best year (7-5) they've had in a while which will likely increase the pot. Georgetown is off to a nice start (6-1) and that school is loaded. Villanova is another wealthy school which I would think is about to move on from Neptune.

I think Pitino’s style of Coaching is having difficulty in the new Age of NIL Money and free Transfers , without Penalty .
Pitino built his prior teams over several Seasons as those players usually remained for 4 years .

Having to barter , cajole and capitulate in getting these BB Nomads to come to St John’s must be hard for a Guy like Pitino . He has his HOF plaque , Millions of dollars of Wealth and a legacy to retire to comfortably .

Having to entice the Smiths and Richmond’s to come here for anything besides money is foolish , if anyone believes otherwise .
Both these Players have 3 or more schools they have sold their skills to in the past . Anyone thinking they have any love or commitment to St John’s beyond their Compensation is ridiculous .
As such , Team effort , Coach’s instructions , mean little to hired guns .
Attitude is a big part of Team , some players have it and some don’t .
To me , if a Player shows up a Coach in public , as Smith has seemingly done ,he has earned whatever Punishment is presented .
At this point , if that means Smith isn’t going to play anymore or , he quits the team , so be it.
Sure , he’s a good player but , you can’t have dissension between Coach , player and teammates continue . No matter , if that unfavorably affects our Team’s performance .
Neither Smith or Richmond are NBA players , this could be the last big paycheck they get and they may have their eye of their next stop , rather than the current one.
