Rick Pitino - Head Coach at St John’s University!!!

During one of the time outs Sunday Fox went into the huddle with Pitino. In a very calm voice he called out the team about basics saying I've told you this five times. You could sense his frustration.

Anybody who's upset about his presser should read today's Newsday article and pay note to Ledlum's comments.

Newsday not avaliable online to non-subscribes, so I have to ask what Ledlum said (he has played hard every second he is out there, BTW. Warts and all, guys would do better to emulate his work ethic).

I do think Rubin dropped the ball, by not asking him about the "unenjoyable" comments, or how he said that even the wins have not been fullfilling. That was troublesome, to me, and is part of the reason why I don't think it's completly off the table that Rick is 1 and done, here.

Pitino’s moved on to next season, the press conference made that abundantly clear. If we happen to win the lottery and sweep our next games or win the BE tourney, great. But he’s moved on.
He said that last week.

He said: "We'll intend to win our last 6, and if we don't then we'll move on."
Or something similar to that.

Mike he said Pitino knows what he's talking about and that you have to take the message, not how It's said. The quote was from earlier in the season so that can explain Pitino's frustration with the team since it seems the guys are not really listening to him and playing smart basketball.

No way I think he walks because that's not how he wants this to end his career.

The thing that gives me hope is that Pitino's first year almost everywhere has been meh from PC to the Knicks to Kentucky to Louisville.

But the second year is always a gigantic leap from the first.

Now, maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges in the age of transfers, NIL and roster instability.

But that's what I got going for me.... which is nice.

Here’s Newsday

Earlier this season, Chris Ledlum was asked about how the coach’s words land with them and replied, “Coach Pitino knows what he’s talking about and sometimes you have to take the message — you have to take what is said and not how it is said.”

So now Pitino has opened the gate and has to expect loyal St. John's fans to scrutinize and criticize his every coaching decision.

What players from last year's team were not the troublemakers? Did Fr. Hanley and/or Mike Cragg pinpoint those not welcomed back? Was Rick Pitino the only person entitled to make a mistake and continue?

To publicly criticize your players was nothing if not self-serving. What did he hope to gain from this presser? It was an excuse expressed to cover his own failures. He also threw his assistant coaches under the bus because they are the ones that brought in these players. Bad on you Rick Pitino. Let's see what you do now.

Yeah well, for some people, that's not possible. Doesn't make them bad people.

Like myself. I'm easily intimidated if someone starts yelling and screaming at me. Doesn't mean they can't critizie what I do, but if you're not going to do it calm and dignified, then we won't get along.

Pitino also told Newsday he didn't think he needed to clarify any of his comments from Sunday's news conference, noting, "I'm fine with what I said."

Well that answers the question on "will he apologize".

This will never happen, but would love to know:
  1. Which assistant was point on which recruits during last year's portal
  2. Which players were never coming back regardless (Stanley, Storr), never going to be invited back (Wusu, Curbelo), and which ones were in that grey area.

So rick had no fun working but the moneys ok.

Concerned about is open/honesty in the media chasing away potential recruits, his "worst 1st year experience ever" comments chasing away current players, and just an overall demeanor that displays his feelings on the sideline. Imo, All this will likely lead to another season of unfulfilled expectations due to key player departures and unwilling recruits.
