I don’t think it’s so much that the team quit on coach Pitino, Pitino quit on the team.
So let me get this straight……
Pitino lauds the great job his staff does recruiting this team.
The team is coming along nicely, goes 4-1 in conference play and no one, not Coach, staff, fans is saying anything about the players not being quick/athletic enough etc.
After a few close losses to Creighton and UConn, the team starts to lose to teams it beat the last time they played as game after game, the team goes into half time with a decent lead and gets badly outplayed the second half.
Now at press conferences, Pitino starts telling us all the limitations of some of his players as to why the losses occurred but never a word about what the staff may have done better.
We now see a decline in the performances of several players, Soriano, Taylor, Dingle, Allyne etc. and more press conferences implying that the team is not up to the task.
And now after a 19 point lead, the team losses to the Hall, scoring one basket in 14 minutes with Joel, after a good first half who never sees the ball. Now Pitino hammers the players in the press conference with his only criticism of his staff was that they recruited the wrong kids?
And fans say the team quit on Pitino, no, it’s the other way around. Since Pitino couldn’t get the job done with this group of kids he claims they arnt good enough?? Is that what a HOF coach does???if that what a coach should do then the Seton Hall coach shouldn’t have won 3 games this season with the talent on his team.
Given Pitino’s expertise , he had to know the ability level of his kids and should have adjusted accordingly, if not, that’s an issue in itself. If every coach who had players with a limited skill set gave up on their team like he did, every final 4 would only include 1 and 2 seeds.
Of course Pitino gets a pas cause he’s a HOF coach and I do believe he will clean house and start again. Whether the results will be different is anybody’s guess but for the sake of this fan base, they better be.
