“I truly wasn’t ripping anybody,” Pitino told Newsday on Monday. “I was pointing out exactly — in a monotone voice — why we lost . . . I am not always calm and certainly not when I rip someone . . . I was not ripping anybody. Can someone please summarize quotes for out of towner without Newsday sub?
Class + no results = Norm. Not surprised. We hired him for results not class. Need to stop kidding ourselves we got both.

It’ll blow over if they win some games. If they keep losing, and losing the way they’ve been, it’s gonna get worse.Have a feeling this will blow over quickly. Unless he decides to go nuclear the next press conference lol
He hasn’t been super successful here. Plus, we’ve basically sucked for 20 years. Not a great combo. It’s gonna get uglier if things don’t change. This is no great mystery. Pitino went where no classy coach or manager would go. The fact that he’s been a super successful coach doesn’t change the fact that he behaved like a jerk. Would be great to see him acknowledge that but don’t expect that he will. If he brings us to sweet sixteens it will all be forgotten, but it was a very bad look for a guy who has had one or two of those.
What he says in this article makes perfect sense. Sston Hall shot 37 free throws (i think we shot 13) because of this. We are constantlynout of position on defense by getting beat to a spot and then reaching. Old story - you play defense with your legs, not your arms.ESPN got an article too
SJU's Pitino 'not ripping anybody,' stands by words
St. John's coach Rick Pitino, speaking to Newsday on Monday, said he stands by the criticism he leveled at his team Sunday night after the Red Storm blew a 19-point lead in a 68-62 loss to Seton Hall.www.espn.com
The head coach of the players is not the same as the fans and even in the professional ranks coaches ripping their players in public in the immortal words of George Costanza is frowned upon.Funny thing is we rip on the team, coaching, players all the time. Pitino holds them to the fire and he’s wrong. Yet he’s not wrong. He knows they’re a ton better than they’re playing. He isn’t gonna pull punches and he’s one of the best coaches that has ever been on the hardwood. I’ll add a measure that every player is being paid now and he knows that so people need to temper their sensitivity. This is no longer amateur sports.
They’re getting paid to perform and it’s a brave new world that the fans, coaches and colleges didn’t ask for. Once you’re getting paid you’re open to criticism beyond what you would have been as a regular recruited scholarship player.
Fans need to stop getting butthurt about his criticisms of the players because Johnny PF has now demanded 6 figures and is playing like 4 figures. Pitino knows this and his disdain isn’t being hidden which im okay with. But let’s not make it like it’s poor children he’s commenting about who are simply doing their best. The system is a mess.
To play the other side - Pitino has been with this group for 5+ months now and you don't need a ton of basketball knowledge to have seen the flaws this defense has had from the jump and it was even one of the first things Pitino talked about before the season started. I understand a certain style of play has won Pitino 800+ games and a couple national championships but this team is just nowhere near equipped to play it. Instead of adjusting his scheme to his players he's trying to get these players to play a style that they are flat out bad at.What he says in this article makes perfect sense. Sston Hall shot 37 free throws (i think we shot 13) because of this. We are constantlynout of position on defense by getting beat to a spot and then reaching. Again he didn’t rip anybody personally. Unathlletic plays, drawing no fouls. He isn’t wrong at all. It’s the players that play the games. I addition my feeling is he singled out Ledlum who probably got a shit ton of money to leave Tennessee just to not perform here. Just my gut feeling on that. Again I don’t think he’s wrong but I’ll blame Pitino and say that we should have just kept Slazinski who is quite a good player and fits better with the way we are playing. The head coach of the players is not the same as the fans and even in the professional ranks coaches ripping their players in public in the immortal words of George Costanza is frowned upon.
I think Rick mentioned Slazinski in the interview, something like ‘the most enjoyable part of my time at St. John’s was showing all the old players the door. I loved it so much I recruited one of my old players and ran him out the door too. The second most enjoyable part is cashing the fat checks the university gives me to finish ninth in the Big East.’Again he didn’t rip anybody personally. Unathlletic plays, drawing no fouls. In 13 non conference games Slazinski averages 15.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg and 33.4 mpg.Again he didn’t rip anybody personally. Unathlletic plays, drawing no fouls. He isn’t wrong at all. I got over a dozen text messages from friends ripping me about Pitino, not going to lie wasn't a fan of what said but more about how he said it! But we knew when we hired him that, at the first presser this is a whole new deal here! I guess a little more pain before we can enjoy this program!I was shocked by the amount of traction this got into the night, and doesn't look like it stopped today either.
RP may not want to apologize or even think he has to, but when it goes that viral is when non-sports people start commenting on social media. And that's when the really ridiculous takes start happening.
Hopefully staff tries to talk him into some sort of conciliatory speech in practice and a half-hearted apology tour. PTI would probably be a good spot for a short interview. He can workshop some of his new comedy bits there but also slip in how he should have done it differently.
