Worth saying though that Nolan Smith, the former Duke player and Duke assistant, is now at Louisville and formed an apparently close relationship with MM. I think that's what is fueling the speculation.

Nolan Smith has been at Louisville since last April and was one of Payne’s first hires when he was named head coach there. Not sure when MM committed to Duke but chances are Smith was already gone.
