Rick’s Targets

Part of the excitement of the Pitino hire, for me, was that Posh, a Big East preseason first team pick who had a down year, would finally have a coach worthy of his talent. That doesn’t seem to be working out, which sucks, IMO. I think it’s ok to express a thought like that. For some posters, there seems to be a feeling that CRP is like some capitano sipping wine in a piazza—-some have even painted that picture—-who must not be doubted….OR ELSE!

Two Iona guards this week and Dual 🤞next weekend is solid start Imo. Dual is outstanding
Ok so say that happens.
C Soriano- a year older and figure Pitino will do a better job of getting him the ball than Anderson. Hopefully works on gathering himself instead of rushing under the basket.
We are a little better there.
PF-Jones and Stanley are better than no one so big edge last year.
SF- Never seen Dual kid but was a Cooley recruit and top 50 so give him edge over WUSU and even with Storr.
SG Clayton- what would hope Storr would be and big edge over Wusu.
PG-partly to make Mullins revenge head spin and partly because it is true, Posh is better than Jenkins. Clayton can play the point if Jenkins struggles.
Bench- don’t have one so last year is better.
Coach- Pitino is at least 4 games better than Anderson.
So assuming we grab a 6-7 / 6-8 guy that can rebound and a couple guys off the bench that can shoot the 3 think we should get into tournament with that sort of roster.
Assuming Dual kid can play and Jenkins isn’t a disaster.

Lol, you’re making comparisons assuming we get no players for certain positions. Even I think that’s crazy.

No making comparison assuming we get Iona guys and Dual. Right now we have 3 kids 2 of which not gonna play. I assume somebody will fill out roster spots but since we have no idea who they are they are not better than what we had.
I guess if you hated the guys that left so much you could argue that nothing is better but I even as much as Wusu annoyed me believes he is better than nothing.
Plus I enjoy bothering people who every time a new coach comes in think everything will be immediately better.

Holy cow. I can see it now. Larry Wright aka " we are sju " who hated Wusu will be changing his screen name to " We are Wusu " !!!! :)

Going to wait to see who favorite player is next year so can change my name to him so he can immediately transfer out.
So far the leaders are:
Potential power forward
Potential small forward
Potential 2 guard
Potential point guard

Let me amend that. I enjoy bothering people when they are wrong. Mostly I am joking, but do like to help to educate on occasion as the basketball IQ around here…..,
Let’s see I said Storr should play more. He should have.
I think this strategy which I have never seen, where you have a press conference to basically encourage your whole team to leave is extremely dangerous.
Now again I love Pitino, but if I can criticize Chris Mullin, I can criticize anyone.
Here is my point, Rick Pitino knows more about basketball than anyone on this board could ever know. No one is disputing that. And assuming we get 5 people on the team it will be best coached team to ever play at ST John’s. But herein lies the rub. Even Pitino needs decent players. And though he knows way more basketball than me, I know more about the history of ST John’s basketball than him. If you don’t believe that take a look at his description of Walter Berry in the Serby article.
I don’t have the answer but I am sure someone can look it up. Since Fran left, outside of Lavin first full class how many top 50 recruits has ST John’s had in last 15 years or so?
Think Rick overestimated his ability to recruit here. I like Pitino and want him to succeed and I am sure he will adjust going forward but I believe we will struggle next year. And I also believe half the “In Pitino I trust “ crowd will complain all year.

Let me educate you on the use of paragraphs, since that is something you neglected to use for the benefit of visual enhancement.

You cannot compare criticism of Mullin, who had never coached anywhere, to Pitino, and his HOF coaching career. Many here were concerned about Mullin’s lack of coaching experience. That is not the case with Pitino.

So Pitino may or may not have made an error in describing Walter Berry who first started classes at SJU summer of 82, 41 years ago , I don’t know as I did not read the article, and now you know more about SJU Bball then him, ok.
Secondly Rick has overestimated his ability to recruit here because look how many top 50 recruits we got since Fran left. Who cares, Soriano was what coming out of high school ? Zach Edey was not top 300 but was player of the year. Rankings are a good indicator but far from everything as I just pointed out. Pitino has never had a line up of top 25 kids, I think you are confusing him with Coach Calipari. He needs good players who he will coach up as he always has done. I will réservé all negative comment on our roster For another 7 weeks until June 1 when we see how the roster shakes up. There is zero reason for us to get all worked up at this point.
And this is coming from someone who repeatedly said that I liked and wanted all of our kids to return, minus 2 or 3 who did not fit in or behave well.

Chris Mullin did more for this program than anyone. If Chris Mullin went to Duke or Virginia than this program would have eventually found itself in the A10 or somewhere.

Chris Mullin did a shit job as a coach here. But he was criticized early and often and again if anyone deserved, no demanded loyalty it was Chris Mullin.

Again Pitino is a great coach, his opening strategy is bizarre, and I disagree with it.

And even though I work while posting and I am I typing on a phone, I posted paragraphs for the dude who complained.

Hey Larry …. Disappointed to read your statement that you “enjoy bothering people” on this site whose opinion you disagree with.

Be advised that there is a long list of individuals that have had their privilege to post on this site terminated because they “enjoyed bothering people” or who intentionally “bothered“ or antagonized other posters.

Don’t kid yourself, you do not have any right to post on RedFan.

Don’t intentionally bother or antagonize. Capisce ?

We’re not talking about Chris Mullin the player. You can’t compare what Chris has done for this program as a player to what Pitino’s experience is as a coach. I thought we were comparing Chris the coach to Rick the coach. And in that case, Chris the coach does deserve criticism. One can acknowledge that Chris Mullin is the GOAT when it comes to players on the team. But not as a coach. And one can make the argument that Rick is one of the all time greats as a coach.

And yea, paragraphs are your friend. ;) 😆
