Rick’s Targets

Why can’t we? Now you’re going to tell me recruiting rankings and past performance don’t have any relevance?

Nobody knows for sure what’s going to happen next year but we can still make assessments about recruiting. You guys would be the first to tout our successes if we had an objectively prominent recruiting class. Why can’t you just admit we’re underperforming?
First off, the recruiting has not completed and neither has the roster of course.

Secondly, if we use the underperforming criteria, for you it is in a vacuum. We either had a kick a** roster by mid April, or the sky is falling.

I will be patient.

Lame excuse. Cooley, English and Stoudemire, all first year coaches, have far outperformed us.
Cooley went from one big east program to another and was recruiting all these kids for years. English also had a lot of Cooleys recruits remain committed to the school and brought some of “his” guys with him much like Rick P did. I don’t know much about Stoudemire’s class, but truth be told SJU still has almost half a roster to complete.

You know it is one thing to question the recruiting up to this point even though we are not even close to finalizing the roster.

But the culprits that keep rehashing how bad it is seem to be getting too much joy in that so how does that make you a fan of the team?

Do I want as many stars in front of a players name? Sure. But at the same time I love when my teams I root for overachieve the so called experts expectations. I bet you Kansas state coach and team completely expected to go far. As did Miami. So I’m sure coach pitino will be more than happy with his roster and expect a lot more out of it than most if not all people.

Custer was pompous ass and that's what killed him and his men. Pitino is a lot smarter. 😜
I do not know that much about my fellow alum and I am biased. Among other things, however, General Custer was a very brave man - much more brave than I or us - who in his age of early 20s served nobly in the Civil War (Custer played a key role at the Battle of Gettysburg, preventing General J.E.B. Stuart from attacking Union troops, and later capturing Confederates fleeing south after the Union victory).
He like Pitino was/is not one dimensional - I laugh when people critique others (Custer, Pitino) when often those who critique are a lot less accomplished or able.
Comparable in part to those already critiquing our new HC Rick Pitino, a master but also imperfect, whose had his Little Big Horn upcomings.
G A Custer was not without flaws - he failed to recognize the overwhelming Sioux storm he was heading into on that fateful LBH day. But even those Native Americans recognized his talents and bravery.
Yes and they knew George Armstrong Custer as the Son of the Morning Star - excellent biography and interesting man.
Thank you -
All the best

West Point Class of 1861 - also fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Bull Run and other battles - facing not shirking his leadership duties. Yep, I’m biased. Forgive me.

I can’t and won’t admit to anything until whatever the final roster looks like plays on the court. Then and only then will I, and you, be able to make an intelligent assessment of how this recruitment was. But I’ll bet you and one other prominent poster here, who is just as negative, er I mean realistic, as you are can’t wait to crow “I told you so!” :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

This may or may not be true but recruiting assessments based on rankings are not a great projection of what a player or a team will be. If it were, we would have made it to the Final Four when we brought in number 1 Felipe Lopez and number 3 Zendon Hamilton. For people drinking the Pitino Kool-Aid that he will bring in a bunch of high level recruits (winning out recruiting battles against North Carolina, Duke, Kentucky, Kansas etc......) they are setting themselves up to be disappointed.

The main point of hiring Rick Pitino was that he can really coach winning basketball and get the players he brings in to be way better than the sum of the parts. Since his roster has not been completed and none of us have watched these players play together under his guidance, it is a tad premature IMHO to say what the ultimate payoff will be on his recruiting efforts.

This does not mean you can't make judgments on our recruits. We all do it, but for every highly touted recruit that we have brought in that has underwhelmed us, there is a Nick Rutherford type, who made no sense on paper to play at this level, that wound up bringing valuable intangibles here and helped us to be better.

These arguments remind me of the ones I read during the early years of the Anderson era. Pitino is a much better coach but players win games. We’re not going to get it done with this level of recruits and barring a major surprise, I would not expect us to win more than 17 games or so next year

You made

You made all that up in your head. No one knows yet what will happen or how many wins St John’s will have next season under this coaching staff.

Portal closes in less than two weeks, dude.
Sorry Boo, but you can’t on the one hand ask posters not to get personal and then respond to a post by calling someone “dude”.
The bottom line is we’ve got 5 spots to fill and if we fill them with 3 guys who are significant Big East contributors (I.e. as good or better than Jenkins) we will be absolutely fine next season. Way too early to judge our class.
I wish Posh had stayed too but neither you nor I know the dynamics behind his decision. If you don’t trust Pitino’s calls here not sure who you would trust.

You certainly may be right Boo, but then again the roster has five more spots to fill. Additionally, I think it is not unreasonable to hope that Pitino will do a better job of blending the talents of whatever roster he brings in, than previous coaches here. Lastly, whoever the players will be that come here, no one has a crystal ball on what they will do. Basketball acumen, intangibles, team chemistry, basketball IQ and many other unknowable factors will determine how many games we will ultimately win.

The truth is that the unknowable factors always exist. This past season Marquette was picked to be a second division Big East team (behind us) based on pre-season assessments (see link below). However they won the Big East regular season title by three games, won the conference tournament also and were ranked 6th nationally.

The Mets and the Yanks have a huge payroll this year with big expectations but so far they are being significantly outperformed by the small market Tampa Bay Rays and the Pittsburgh Pirates. As I go through life the only thing I know for certain is that I don't know anything and that my crystal ball is very cloudy. That is why we watch the games and most gamblers die broke.

The portal closes in 2 weeks as far as new people being able to enter it doesn’t mean recruiting stops for the people already in it or anybody who enters it within the next 2 weeks.
Just have to be in the portal by then. Guys can choose to commit anytime afterwards provided there is a school who wants them.
