Ricardo Gathers, PF - BAYLOR

you're traveling across the country doing God knows what.

Come now.
"God knows what?" We don't need God, we all know what and it will pay dividends - he's recruiting and spreading goodwill. If we will only remain patient and less fickle.

Look at the proof - how much joy and accomplishment has already been witnessed since SJU hired Lavin. He's a tough, determined guy so why second guess his reasons for being on the road rather than on the bench.

I'm satisfied with the entire direction fo the program and I'm not one to dismiss Lavin's own take on what (and when) he should do post-surgery.

all the best

This is a hunch...a wild idea....with no basis in fact at all. With his feel for the dramatic, the show, how to seal the deal, I'm betting a $2 bill, Coach returns for the UCLA game.

It would be nice if Lavin can take the intermediate apprach. Take a valium, sit on the bench and let Dunlap do the coaching.

It would be nice if people would stop acting like they know how to run this program and treat a recovering cancer patient better than Lavin and his doctors, respectively.
I never said Lavin should do what I proposed, if it violates medical advise, just said it would be nice to see him on the bench and reassuring to the recruits.

I've read all of the posts attemtping to justify Lavin's absence. In truth, none of us know what's going on with Lavin, including myself. From a common sense perspective, I just have difficulty grasping how many months after his surgery, Lavin is fit to travel around the country, but cannot coach a two hour basketball game.  I see pics of him drinking a beer in the sky box and canoodling with his wife while five freshman who he recurited are forced to go to war undermanned.

And for those of you justifiers who have said that Lavin is betters-served recruiting than coaching, that's a load of popycock and it's born out by the multitude of decomittments as well as the Lindsey transfer.

If there is something prohibiting Lavin from coaching, I would like to know what it is. Just blaming it on fatigue from "coming back to soon" is not a plausible excuse for either the recruits or the fans.

Just my two cents -- let the crucification of me begin

I really didn't want to respond to this but, unless you are sitting next to Lavin on visits how do you know what he is telling them. We are not there during team meetings so how do we know what he is telling his players. He will coach when he is physically able to. And when someones health and well being takes back seat to a game is the day I stop watching sports!

To be fair Marcus, Waco or not, Baylor will give Ricardo instant playing time on a team that will be highly ranked next year. Additionally, he knows some of the players well and doesn't have to worry about playing the five spot. I know we offer a lot, but this package is not bad. Not to mention his brother's new condo in the Waco Desert Inn. Only kidding, maybe!

I'm not so sure that Gathers will be getting as much playing time as he may think. I'll admit I dont know much about their team but they have Quincy Miller at the 4 and are bringing in 2 very good centers including the #2 player in the class. Not to mention who ever else they have who will get minutes at the 4/5. I believe he will get minutes but will be more of a role player at first

18 wins a possibility next year -- woo hoo! Sounds like what we were looking forward to in the Norm Roberts era. I'm beginning to think that the combination of Lavin's absence and the ineligible recruits have set the program back. I think it's about time Lavin gets his a#$ back on the bench. If he can travel all around the country recruiting, there is no reason he can't be coaching.

I think you need to chill out. Coach Lavin and staff have done a good job so far. Right now his health is his main priority. It takes a lot more energy and is a lot more stressful to coach than to sit in the stands observing recruits. All of us wish he was on the bench, but it is more important for him to be healthy when he does start coaching again.

If I had to choose between Baylor and SJU right now, I would choose Baylor, Baylor is a top ranked team who have become a regular NCAA team. SJU has not won a NCAA game since Mike Jarvis was coach. These athletes were in elementary school when that happened.

You know as much about Baylor as I do about astrophysics.
Regular NCAA team? In EIGHT YEARS Drew and Baylor have been to TWO NCAAs. This year will be the 3rd in nine years.
Here's a little current Baylor BB history. Nothing like a great tradition. LOL!

The 2005 Bears were hindered by only having 7 scholarship players and recorded only one win in conference play. In spite of these challenges, head coach Scott Drew was able to put together a 2005 signing class ranked No. 7 nationally by HoopScoop.
The basketball program experienced a resurgence under coach Scott Drew with an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008 for the first time in 20 years...

The 2008-2009 team won the program's first postseason victory since 1950 in its first round NIT victory over the Georgetown Hoyas in Waco.

Prior to all this there were the years under coach Bliss, with Murder, payoffs, coverups, NCAA sanctions, etc., etc.

Have a nice day!

And I might add that if Cal ever skips to the NBA, Scott Drew would be on Kentucky's short list. Baylor is a hot name now, but I think they return to earth if Drew leaves.

Have you been to Waco?

Having been to Texas many times over the years and once assigned there for a few, I know it well.

Waco is perhaps the most depressing city in the entire Lone Star state. Baylor itself is surrounded by urban decay on a Detroit scale but with a warm climate. You don't live in Waco, you pass through it. Most of the middle class has moved to the northwestern suburbs and the rest of the city (south and east ends) are poverty-ridden.
But Gathers and other top prospects are not attracted to Waco for its culture or dusty droll Texas beauty. They are attracted by the abundant free tail available to members of the athletic teams....especially football players. Coach Drew is likely staying one step ahead of sanctions. Time will tell.

I would choose St John's based on the coaching staff

Yeah, but unfortunately you're not Ricardo Gathers.

Hahaha yeah, I guess the NBA coaching experience wasn't appealing enough for him. Best of luck to him in Waco.

The extra benefits were too much ;)

Sanctions being discussed against Baylor for recruiting violations. Does this put Gathers back in play? Has he signed his LOI or just given an verbal?

We wouldn't have Sampson if Gathers was still committed.

It could put him back in play, but I doubt it. He only gave a verbal, as he committed in February. He'll be able to sign on Wednesday.

I think a primary reason he left outside of what most think of, is that we didn't have a center and he would get stuck playing it here.

So you think if Lavin signs a couple of bigs and Baylor gets substantial penalties, Gathers would be back in play?
