Ricardo Gathers, PF - BAYLOR

Maybe it's my advanced age kicking in, but I thought I recalled that there was speculation that one reason why Sampson decommitted was due to the verbal given by Gathers, as they would have likely played the same position.

Just wondering if Gathers' verbal to Baylor will help us with Sampson. If we can get Sampson, Obekpa (sp?) and Sheppard or Sanchez, to go along with GG, we should be OK on the front line.

I haven't heard a thing about Pelle in a long time. Last I can recall, rumor had him looking at SDSU. Any update on him? Is he even looking to play college ball next year? IAre we definitely done recruiting him?

Forget Pelle.

You might never hear his name again.

Think Theo Davis part 2.

That's what I thought. Too bad. What a waste of talent.

What about Sampson/Gathers? Do you think that losing Gathers will make a big difference with Sampson?

18 wins a possibility next year -- woo hoo! Sounds like what we were looking forward to in the Norm Roberts era. I'm beginning to think that the combination of Lavin's absence and the ineligible recruits have set the program back. I think it's about time Lavin gets his a#$ back on the bench. If he can travel all around the country recruiting, there is no reason he can't be coaching.

Why is Baylor all of a sudden a top destination? I must have blinked, when did this happen?

Baylor and Drew have got a bad rep in recruiting circles. It's not beautiful Waco Texas that is drawing these kids there.

Stay classy!

To be fair Marcus, Waco or not, Baylor will give Ricardo instant playing time on a team that will be highly ranked next year. Additionally, he knows some of the players well and doesn't have to worry about playing the five spot. I know we offer a lot, but this package is not bad. Not to mention his brother's new condo in the Waco Desert Inn. Only kidding, maybe!

Clearly you've missed the 50 other posts stating why traveling to recruit is less strenuous for Lavin than coaching is.

They have been winning, we have not. They are ranked, we are not. They will get to the NCAA's next year, we?

I'm pretty sure it went something like this after Lavin went back to coaching and relapsed:

Doctors: No more coaching until we tell you it's OK
Lavin: OK but can I travel and recruit?
Doctors: OK, try it, but we will monitor you and tell you if you have to stop

That seems much more feasible to me than:
Lavin: Doc, I don't feel like coaching, can you write me an excuse?

I know you guys are fans but be real!!

As was mentioned a little earlier on this thread-I would be quite happy with Winston Shep. in lieu of Ricardo-I too think Winston could have more up side-- I like the fact that he is the defensive stopper on Findley and is able to effectively guard a top flight SG/SF and top flight PF/C.
If we can land Sampson/Winston/Obekpa I will be extremely happy-of course there's a lot of "ifs" in landing them. But I can wish and dream.

I've read all of the posts attemtping to justify Lavin's absence. In truth, none of us know what's going on with Lavin, including myself. From a common sense perspective, I just have difficulty grasping how many months after his surgery, Lavin is fit to travel around the country, but cannot coach a two hour basketball game.  I see pics of him drinking a beer in the sky box and canoodling with his wife while five freshman who he recurited are forced to go to war undermanned.

And for those of you justifiers who have said that Lavin is betters-served recruiting than coaching, that's a load of popycock and it's born out by the multitude of decomittments as well as the Lindsey transfer.

If there is something prohibiting Lavin from coaching, I would like to know what it is. Just blaming it on fatigue from "coming back to soon" is not a plausible excuse for either the recruits or the fans.

Just my two cents -- let the crucification of me begin

It would be nice if Lavin can take the intermediate apprach. Take a valium, sit on the bench and let Dunlap do the coaching.

I don't totally disagree -- why can't Lavin temper his emotions a bit. Imagine if any of us got sick (God forbid). Most of us work in a job that causes a stress. Can you imagine taking six months or a year off from work b/c it causes stress. Meanwhile, you're traveling across the country doing God knows what. I can't imagine a job that would take you back under those circumstances. Is coaching basketball really more stressful than what the rest of us do?

It would be nice if people would stop acting like they know how to run this program and treat a recovering cancer patient better than Lavin and his doctors, respectively.

Yes, anybody who dares to criticize Lavin or the program is clearly a troll visiting the site just to criticize the program. Makes total sense. Also makes total sense that the "troll" would choose the user name Boo Harvey. Clearly many college basketball fans outside the program know who Boo Harvey is.

If you disagree with what a poster has to say, fine -- feel free to respond. But to accuse somebody of being a troll becaue you don't have anything else -- that's just weak.

Simply stated, I'm a frustrated Johnnies fan. Of course the health of any human being is more important than a silly game of basketball. Am I entitled, however, to be skeptical and incredulous about certain things that don't seem to add up -- sure I am.

In addition, Gathers didn't choose Baylor and not shoes SJU because Lavin has been out.

From my perspective you certainly are entitled to be skeptical and incredulous but it comes down to one thing, why would Lavin NOT want to coach? When a crime is committed always look for a motive; what is the motive here? He just doesn't want to coach this year so he is sitting out and doctor's orders are just a smokescreen? What will his excuse be next year, the dog ate his playbook? Obviously, it sets the program back but I refuse to believe he came in with all that energy, assembled a top notch staff, set the city on its head with the success last year, and is not coaching this year because.......he just doesn't feel like it. Does not even begin to pass the smell test. Maybe we are not getting all the G2 but that is Lavin's right; it is his health and his decision on what he keeps private.

I never said Lavin should do what I proposed, if it violates medical advise, just said it would be nice to see him on the bench and reassuring to the recruits.
