Revamped Big East

Actually, they're right about one thing. West Virginia isn't a large TV market. But they're wrong about another. WVU is basically a community college for Pennsylvania and New Jersey with some West Virginia kids sprinkled in. They go there to party and its not hard to get in there whatsoever. They have a large enough alumni base to fill out a lot of TV markets around the northeast. Yes its important to have "local" schools to capture the TV market, but ratings are very important for advertising. I think WVU still has a fair amount to offer television wise and certainly more then Mississippi State, Ole Miss, or Vandy IMO.

It;ll give us more time to sort things out and add new teams. Unless its a team like Butler , then just wait for the Big 12 to fold. Its only a matter of time before the Big 12 folds and Kansas and Kansas State come to the Big East.
In 27 months and assuming Lavin is still working his magic, ST. John's will replace Syracuse and adding Kansas will replace Pitt and Kansas State is a top 25 team. I don't feel comfortable with Temple or St. Joes.
Adding Navy wouldn't be too bad for football and add East Carolina and things won't be too bad football wise.

And raise the Big East exit fees to $20 million !!!!!!!!!

And hope ACC football teams get raided by the SEC or the Big 10 or the Pac 10. It'll be justice if the ACC got raided and their hick conference got decimated.

Maybe in the next 27 months Syracuse will come to their senses and realize the mistake their making.

Tom.

There are 5 BCS Bowls which Notre Dame has its own deal and does not need a conference affiliation.

There are approximately 30 non BCS Bowls which are contracted by conference.

The Big East has contracts with the following Bowls which provides Notre Dame a tie in:
Liberty,
Pinstripe,
Champs Sports,
Belk,
Beef O'Brady's

Each of the other conferences has like tie in agreements. Under the present set up Notre Dame would not be able to secure a non BCS bid.unless it had a conference affiliation.

I guess I'd leave too if I had to look forward to the Beef O'Brady's Bowl. Can you even have two apostrophes in one word?

When the league appeared more stable, an attractive option was to let Villanova grow from F.C.S. status. But the Big East does not have a lot of time to be patient; its B.C.S. bid expires after the 2013 season. That should help Temple, which is an emerging program that beat Connecticut, the Big East champion, last year and played evenly with Penn State on Saturday. (Blowing out Villanova earlier in the year, 42-7, in front of 30,000 Temple fans certainly helps the Owls’ case.)

Tom, if the BE is not going after Temple hard they should all get what they deserve! They own the Philly market in football and are the only chance for Villanova to grow and at the same time form an intense football rivalry that could include Uconn. I have no confidence that the inept leadership in Providence can get this done as history has shown.

I've wanted to add Temple for years.
When the football schools bolt, Temple has nowhere to go but back to the MAC, and we still have them for hoop.
They'll get the votes also, because they're attractive to both sides.
nova didn't get the votes the last time, and that was before they stabbed the hoop schools in the back.

Temple would be a welcomed addition.

-A great history and tradition.

-Dunphy is one of the most underrated coaches in the nation.

-And the Liacouras Center is better than almost every on-campus arena save UConn and Louisville.

Agree, temple would be a great choice. They have mediocre football in a big market, large enrollment and great basketball. The others I love are Memphis and Xavier for bball.

This article describes what many on the board have said - the changes in the ACC and Beast will not affect the recruits' decisions that much (read recruits' comments), but rather the good bball schools will still get their players. Recruiting could change some for the ACC, making things easier recruiting in the NE, but harder down south w/ Cuse and Pitt gaining more visibility.

Just saw this link on the Seton Hall site, where someone had copied it off the Wisconsin site. Don't known if it's already been posted here, but it's a brilliant send-up of what's going on in the Big East and certainly worthy another look. Great stuff.

The reason why this all happened is because Notre Dame never joined in football. I understand they want to remain an independent because of their contract with NBC (to keep the revenue that is generated), but couldn't the Big East give them a deal no other conference would to entice them. For example, if the NBC contract is worth $10 annually and normally a conference would require 50% of the money to be shared amongst its members, couldn't the Big East offer to only require them to share 20% as an example. This would entice Notre Dame to join because the financial conditions are minimal and it will give them a great chance every year (especially in the Big East) to win the automatic bid. Considering the Big East has a smaller in conference football schedule than other conferences it will still give ND the ability to play a large OOC schedule. They could still play the USC's, Michigan, Michigan Sts every year and the games against NAVY, Army et (they currently play) would be replaced by Big East conference games. In essence their schedule would remain comparable to their current schedule.

This would save big east hoops (would keep uconn, louisville, wv, rutgers etc) because the football schools would love having ND for football and would remain members. It would probably strengthen the league with the visbility of the Big East on NBC for football and the basketball would be status quo. I understand losing Cuse and Pitt hurts in hoops, but if the other schools remained and added ND for football, I think the pain would be short term. In the end Cuse and Pitt would wish they never left by adding ND football.

TCU, USF, West Virginia , Syracuse, Pitt, Rutgers and several others wasn't a bad league. ACC football isn't much better even with Syracuse and Pitt and Big East basketball is 10 times better then ACC basketball.
Maybe if they waited, the Big East could have gotten Navy, Air Force and the Big 12 schools like Baylor, Missouri assuming the Big 12 folded. And also East Carolina and Central Florida . Big East Football would have been better with all those additions.

Great stuff. Love college guys staying up all night, working on their creativity. Sometimes you have to do an allnighter to accomplish something relevent. Keep buning that midnight oil, it's great for our amusement.

You ever drive thru Philadelphia and see Temple ? Block after Block for like 10 blocks is Temple University. Huge campus.
Villanova is like a High school and they got the football stadium.

Has Temple been in the top 25 in basketball much in the last 10 years ?
