Reasonable Expectations for Steere

Some of you guys make it sound like playing in a college basketball game is harder than searching for Osama bin Laden through the mountains of Afghanistan.

He will get around 5 minutes each half. I think his returns spells the end of Sears getting minutes.
Lol at 5minutes.each half, Arizona has tall boys. He'll get at least 12 a half if not in foul trouble
Maybe, but WVU had big boys and I dont remember Sears getting 12 minutes a half.
Sears isn't Steere
You seem to know about this kid. Ive never seen him play. I just know hes a 4 star acc transfer. Coach Mike gave Dunn a ton of minutes his first game back so maybe your right. Dunn didnt have much competition in front of him though.

Steere has 3 guys in front of him that are playing at a high level in Roberts, Penny and the Duke. Im not sure who you want on the bench to give Steere minutes. Hes going to have to earn it.
In terms of talent I don't think Ian has anyone in front of him. If he ever gets up to Marcellus level toughness watch out.

Steere needs the mentality: "My #1 responsibility is to rebound, and I'm getting that rebound. Don't care if the opponent is going for the rebound or it's my teammate. I cant look to see if it's the opponent or my teammate.
I'm gonna beast out, out there." Gotta turn him into a rebounding maniac.
Can anyone opine on his ability based on viewing him in practice?
Practice is practice, the guy has played all of four minutes of CBB in a year and a half and I would dare say not a person on this board has ever seen him play a serious game of basketball. Opining anything at this point is rather pointless. He probably will get minutes tomorrow night and some semblance of a grounded evaluation can begin.

Steere is very talented. He’s got skills that those guys don’t have save maybe Roberts, but is a lot bigger body than Roberts. Hes got the tools and will be played. He just needs a fire and I hope he has it. Kid is a gazelle at his size. Lots of potential.

No offense to you, Mario, but I have a stance similar to Logen.

Just see what Steere does tomorrow. It'll be best to truly evaluate Steere after about a month.

My thoughts after reading this and some other recent threads.......

1. No one has seen enough of Steere to determine whether he is an NBA player

2. It would be premature to erect a statue of Marcellus Earlington.

3. Comparing Hall of Famers, like Bill Russell, to Josh Roberts is unfair

I am excited about these players too, but some of us need to pump the breaks!

Love Coach MA, love the way season has gone so far. On the other hand, I have never seen Steere play so will defer any opinion on his skills until I actually see him play.

I cannot agree w/ u here. The Duke of Earlington is my favorite player on this team. Nothing would make me happier then to see this kid out there 30 minutes a game. Hes a total lunchpailer. The best garbage man in the big east. He cleans up everyones messes.

The Duke!!!!!!!!

Lol......if that's how you see it, I think there's some room next to Lapchick.

No worries, just wanted to get an idea of his skill set. I realize practice is not a real game but surely a good barometer for his potential.

Thanks

FWIW, I agree that practice is certainly a good barometer for potential. But some here are going overboard on the “potential” impact of a player they have never seen dribble a ball in anger. Much of succeeding at anything is between the ears and in the chest and no one can gauge that until the lights go on.

Fingers crossed for Steere.......We haven't had a banger under the basket for a long time.

I've watched the "preparation" clip posted on Twitter several times. Steere is thinner than I expected. Definitely not a taller version of Earlington. I assumed Steere would have filled out by now and bulked up. His dad is huge. I'm still hoping Steere will be a good rebounder. Between Earlington and Steere we should routinely see team rebounds in the double digits.

Mike Anderson recruited Steere a couple years ago for Arkansas. Funny how things worked out.

Highly recruited junior power forward Ian Steer talked about plans to visit Arkansas this summer on Recruiting Thursday.

He and assistant Scotty Thurman are trying to line up a June visit to Fayetteville. Steere is also talking to Coach Mike Anderson.

Steere, 6-9, 250 pounds of High Point (N.C.) Wesleyan Christian has more than 20 other scholarship offers from schools like Arkansas, Connecticut, Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Florida State and Georgia.

Steere thinning down had to be by design. No different than Caraher. I'm sure Anderson made it clear these guys needed to be in shape. Steere came in big and strong but likely soft/not lean to play fast and long. As for Steere's father and his size...not doubt a huge man, but reality is that's partially loads of steroids and growth hormone. If anything, be thankful he got his dad's height and interest to weight train.

Two early staff impressions of Ian I heard were;

He needed to get in much better shape & not get “three crazy”.

Bang on the interior, set screens & do the little things. Suspect he bought in & looking forward to his presence.

I saw early season workouts and while Steere looked big, he was slow footed and moved nothing like the guy in the clip paultzman posted yesterday. A lot of these guys came into CMA’ team thinking they were in good shape but in reality, we’re not near the shape CMA wants them in. I’m sure Steere lost plenty of fat weight and is a lot better shape than he’s ever been, which is good for us. Excited to see him play and I think cma’s recent comments are really just to light a fire.
