Reasonable Expectations for Steere

Smart to temper expectations, but I do wonder how much of this is because of our recent past being disappointed 95% of the time. Don't forget, Steere was a 4 star recruit in HS and he has legit size at this level. These are the types of players that F5 schools get and should look like they belong. I'm not saying to expect a lot, but I'm sure he will be decent at worst.

Absolute worst case scenario he backs up Roberts and gives him breaks. This greatly benefits the team...he also can fill in when Roberts is in foul trouble and it happens pretty often unfortunately. Great to have another legit big to either compliment him against big teams or fill in for him if not start over him if all goes really well.

Some HS stats since he only played a bit in 1 college game:

77% FT, 0-10 from 3 (so please don't take any 3's), averaged about 7 Reb per game, a bit over 1 block per game, etc. I don't expect him to be a superstar and the beauty is that we don't need him to be one. We just need him to be a competent big who can score a bit and rebound.

+100.
The only game clips we have are from high school. He very well could have stagnated while sitting and now on his 3rd coach in two years. His father is a Beast and is in great shape. Maybe junior doesn't have the same training enthusiasm or maybe he is actually the best talent on the team but is a work in progress in understanding his role and the new system.
From his high school clips he projects as our 3rd or 4th scorer. I am more concerned that Heron and Figueroa play up go their potential so that players like Steere, Roberts, Dunn and Champagnie don't have to feel pressure to score.
I hope the Steere, Roberts, Champy, Dunn etc players are able to take the double team pressure off Figgy . Especially since Heron hasn't been able to hit the broad side of a barn.

Respectfully, Heron has had a handful of bad shooting games, but his full season to date shooting statistics and Figgy's are very close.

Figgy 40.8% FG, 42.6% from three, 69.8% free throws
Heron, 40.5% FG, 40.8% from three, 78.8% from line.

Wow...from recent play it feels more like Fig is shooting 45% from 3 and Heron about 15%. He had been hitting his mid rangers but his 3 PT shot fell off the cliff. He clearly lost confidence and what confirmed that to me was his missed dunk that gave Williams the SC top 10 (#1) dunk lol.

Heron's shot just barely 30% from 3 his last 6 games and 36% FG which is scary. That's actually worse than it looks because most of his 3's have been wide open. A player of his caliber should be a much more routine 3 PT threat. I'll never forget his first game last year when he looked like the most crisp, skilled, and best shooter by far on our team. He was automatic. Not sure what happened to him recently. It's weird...he usually either can't hit anything or hits almost everything from 3. Maybe he harps on his misses too much. Anyway, we need him to get healthy and rejoin the team. Hopefully he gets out of the rut.

Hardly the criterion for success. Hoping for better than 3 ppg, 2 rpg, 42% fga.
He averaged 4 and 4 as a jr under Lou. Like the program he regressed under Brian. ;)

Steere just needs to be a competent big off the bench this season. Obviously would have been great for him to get some run against the cupcakes but the tough remaining schedule is a good opportunity to prepare him for next season when he could be a more necessary piece of the puzzle. Compete on the boards, catch and finish open opportunities around the hoop and hit your free throws. If he can be a net positive in those areas while being on the floor for like 15 minutes a game, I'll be pleased. Anything beyond that is gravy. If he excels, he can compete with his teammates for a starting spot next season. Unless he's an undeniable, offensive star right from the jump there's no reason not to ease him in.

Could be a frustrating first game for him against Arizona just because of their athleticism and length down low with Nnjai and Jeter. I can see one of those weird stat lines where he only plays 5 or 6 minutes but somehow picks up 4 fouls. Fortunately for the team his first game is one they need him for. Unfortunately for Steere it may not be the best matchup for him to get his feet wet and stay on the court.

Mike Anderson says Ian Steere "brings some size and athletic ability" but is curious how that will translate to game action. He can make his debut vs. Arizona.

Zagoria

CMA is smart

I'd think first time out that we'll see about 12 minutes and be better able to gauge his contribution.

Welll at least we get him back in a game against the big boys.. He can go out, play loose and just be aggressive. Nothing to lose against Zona’s big and talented front line. His size will help, even for defense and 5 fouls.

I think he will be eased in. He will get around 5 minutes each half. I think his returns spells the end of Sears getting minutes.

Lol at 5minutes.each half, Arizona has tall boys. He'll get at least 12 a half if not in foul trouble

Maybe, but WVU had big boys and I dont remember Sears getting 12 minutes a half.

He’s also not gonna get 24 minutes in his first game back In 15 months for a team who’s in the top 20 nationally in terms of tempo.

Do we we know his workouts in practice, and his pops seems like a fitness guy, maybe he worked with his son as well.

Steere may be the only NBA level player on the team and CMA runs rigorous practices that make playing 10 minutes in a half seem like a walk in the park. The issue may be more about mental toughness than physical abilities.
Think Rob Werdan.

You seem to know about this kid. Ive never seen him play. I just know hes a 4 star acc transfer. Coach Mike gave Dunn a ton of minutes his first game back so maybe your right. Dunn didnt have much competition in front of him though.

Steere has 3 guys in front of him that are playing at a high level in Roberts, Penny and the Duke. Im not sure who you want on the bench to give Steere minutes. Hes going to have to earn it.
