Rasheem Dunn Waiver Denied (APPEAL WON)

I signed the petition. Agree with Paultzman on path forward. School needs to get chapter & verse on NCAA rationale for denial (assume there is one) and engage experienced counsel to advocate for reversal. Probably unrealistic knowing how NCAA operates to expect Rasheem to play before 2nd semester.
Agree, but hopefully the fallout from their initial decision motivates them to take a second look more quickly then normal. We shall see.
Sense that could very well happen.

Great job by the Johnnies faithful!!
It's very impressive the unity that is being shown, fans are making the Cleveland State AD feel the heat on twitter as well, he's blocking a lot of people and trying to filter out responses to his tweets. When he was actively trying to block Dunn from getting a waiver he didn't imagine he'd receive this much backlash. It's honestly shameful that any AD would do this to a college kid, Cleveland State should be embarrassed and be doing whatever they can to right this situation, it's a horrible look to a school that already doesn't get the best recruits.

I just hope once the season starts next week if Dunn isn't eligible yet, people forget and just let it go, which is what I'm betting Cleveland State is banking on and why they are just being quiet and letting it die down.

He underestimates this fan base....hell we are still pining for the return of the Indian mascot and the redmen name 30 years later. We don't forget.

What is his Twitter? Are any recruits following him? The recruits are who should be targeted.

It's really starting to heat up. Zach has a story on the fan backlash, Dick Vitale is talking about it, Jay Bilas...we need to keep tweeting at key guys. Howie Schwab is talking about it too. I think people severely underestimate St. John's fanbase and our reach. For a private school we really do have a large presence when we know we need to speak up or if we are doing really well. We should not forget about this and keep going after Cleveland State and their AD even after the season starts. There's a lot of gray area this day in age, however this is a case where there is zero. To have a kid sit 2 years and lose a year of eligibility is atrocious when college is only 4 years. Send the petition to your friends and family...if everyone can convince another 10 or so to sign then it will really pick up more. Cleveland State had the right to make their decision, however now they will reap what they sowed. PR disaster for them. I know this probably wouldn't happen, but how great would it be if Val Ackerman announced that the Big East will not schedule Cleveland State or anyone in their conference?

in all honesty this really galvanized the base. Whats the chances this kid will get this reversed ? Also i hope after all this that if this poor kid can't play again this year he still stays with program and doesn't bolt. ridiculous the whole thing.

I just signed the petition. The wording of the petition is comical and sad at the same time. Misspelled names, words, missing words. I’m sure that the original author had their heart in the right place.....but damn.....a little editing would have been nice!
Must have been written by a St John's alum :p

True, but you know the old saying: a rolling stone may not be perfect or pretty but can cause an avalanche. Okay, i made that up, lol. "FreeRahDunn"

Is there an edit function on the petition site? I've never created anything there, so I'm not sure.

On the off chance that the author is among us, PM me. I'll edit the thing for you and won't out you.

I canvassed the timeline at CSU during the summer and there's no doubt that Rasheem's been hosed.
CSU was imploding by July; 6 players were in the portal; 2 leading scorers had transferred.
AD Garrett had kept Felton on despite a 2-year 22 - 44 record but he talked to some transferring players and decided Felton had to go.
Apparently a couple of Rasheem's friends had left but the kid stayed until Garrett fired Coach Felton in the middle of this turmoil on July 12.
He entered the portal the next day; a new coach was hired on the 26th.
Rasheem commited to St. John's Aug. 2.
Obviously, CSU tried to get Dunn back, but by that point he was likely set on returning home and SJ attracted him.
Where's the 'choice' here and how is losing 1 year of eligibility for a player that had sat out a year anything but punitive?
Hopefully this gets reversed.
Two things I'd love to know:
1) Were any of the other kids who transferred out of Cleveland St granted a waiver to play this year? and...
2) Did Cleveland St oppose ALL waiver requests for their kids who transferred out this summer?
Not sure, but don't think waivers applied for the others unless there was a hardship case; the others entered the portal before the coach was fired and I do not believe any of the others had sat out this past year. Tyree Apply transferred to FL and is sitting 1 out, Aleksa Poovich transferred to Div II, another kid transferred to a Horizon League competitor and is sitting out; one kid returned to CSU.
Rasheem's case seems different because he sat out a year and left--despite the turmoil--after his coach was fired.

Recruits may well be following Dennis Gates, the new coach, and likely his Staff. THAT may be where to target to get CSU to truly feel the flames.

A Lavelle Herring started the petition. I left a positive comment on the petition's thread asking respectfully that the petition's 'english' be corrected.

There's a blog or website called Cleveland Sports Talk. It has 39K followers and follows Dennis Gates, CSU's new coach.
A targeted and civil message to that site might help.

P.S. A tweet to 92.3FM, Cleveland's Sports Talk Radio might also be effective.
NCAA on transfers-
http://www.ncaa.org/student-athletes/current/transfer-terms
Thanks for posting. FOOD FOR THOUGHT Under "Exceptions" to transfer rule, it indicates that waivers can be granted in extraordinary circumstances. It is interesting in that it says the student can not apply for a waiver, only the school can file the waiver but the school can not "administer" the waiver. It can only be administered by the conference office OR the NCAA. Maybe this is something BE commissioner can give a ruling on the waiver (and screw the a$$holes at the NCAA.
