@Providence, Tue., Feb. 13, 7p, CBSSN

The sad thing about this fan base is that when things go south, the usual mantra is …. We don’t have Big East players, these kids are mid majors etc. The same posts were written last year with Anderson’s team as they are being written now. Well, how are all of Anderson’s transfers working out? Hmmmmm looks like many will not only be dancing but most made significant contributions to get their teams to that point.

In terms of this years group, while some may be having a disappointing season, it didn’t start out that way. Soriano, Ledlum, Luis, Jenkins, Allyne, Taylor, Dingle and Conway are all legit Big East level players. The two frosh were highly sought after high schoolers etc. Do you all forget we led the nation in offensive rebounding for some time or that Soriano was a double double machine? Or that even last year Jenkins scored in double digits against UConn in the Dance? I could go on and on.

Unfortunately many of them have lost their confidence individually and collectively as seen by our teams struggles to finish games and that needs to be addressed before seasons end or it’s likely this sort of thing could carry into next years team and beyond. Being a sports fan is never easy, being a St John’s fan is gut wrenching at best as there never seems to be an end to the dark cloud that hovers above.

The game is won and lost by the players. How can anyone disregard the masterful play of Oduro in the second half, that is what won the game! Have you seen just one, ANY one of our players so efficient! Didnt miss a foul shot! Can Joel move like Oduro? NO! Why did we not defend the drive and dish to the corner shooter until it was too late? Did anyone of our players shoot like Gaines did outside? Yes, maybe Conway who played terrific. He was constantly moving without the ball. Who else does that consistently? NOBODY! Ever watch Joel come off picks and try to roll? Very poor.
Many of same factors every game. Our first team offense is way too stagnant except for Jenkins. Dingle doesnt get himself open, and his shot is inconsistent as are shots from Alleyne, Ludlum,Dunlap, etc.Surprised Wicher not playing more.

It doen’t take a genius to see net of GT & D’P Johnnies are easiest team in BE to prepare for and exploit.

Ironic that Rick adapted to three point implementation extraordinarily efficient, but this team is horrible hitting 3s & defending them especially in transition.

Add this to the fact that he said he “brought in shooters”….. who can’t shoot and it becomes even more “head scratching “.

Random thoughts:

1. StJ’s has a lot of “good” players on its roster, but not player(s) to take over the game at the end which is needed ro consistently win in the Big East.

2. The StJ’s players are now playing without without confidence; they are playing “not to lose”.

3. Teams have to learn how to win. This team does not how to win at the end of the game.

4. What happened to Dunlap? The kid is a “shooter”. StJohn’s needs shooters. Dunlap played well in 2 games and then disappeared on the bench.

5. Former Coach Mike Anderson is the happiest man alive.

Last 2 games for Josh Oduro, mid level transfer
-32 Points
-28 Points
English brought Oduro from GW with him . He completely abused Soriano last night . He has a loot of moves in the low post and is a decent shooter and a great free throw shooter .
Soriano is just too lumbering and slow footed to deal with him .
Zuby is better defensively but , Oduro got him in foul trouble too .

Soriano’s offense has disappeared . Maybe he’s tired from the intense Pitino practices ? They have been going full tilt since last summer .

While our defense gets most attention for lack of it , the real culprit is our woeful outside shooting .
Conway has a good shot but , only gets limited opportunity and not enough stuff run for him .
Actually come to think of it , Pitino doesn’t run a lot of structured offense , which is surprising .
Luis has talent but , his handle is too inconsistent at this point. He gets stripped a lot trying to drive to the rim .

One thing dreadfully missing with our team is we don’t hit the 3’s consistently . Nearly all BE teans have players that can shoot the open 3 and make them . We don’t .

We are going to need much better talent next year .

I have confidence RP will find what he wants . He won’t be lead astray again with starting 2 Ivy League players . Great young men but , not Stars at this level .

If it wasn’t Oduro, it would have been Carter. Let’s not kid ourselves.

The Dunlap situation is strange. He played good and knocked down some 3s against Depaul. And then hasnt played since.

He will not take any heat but Pitino has not done a great job this year. He needs to be better next year. Im not a fan of his substitutions, his burying freshman on the bench while the players who play stink anyway, keeping that time out in his pocket last night was awful etc etc etc.

Can't imagine that Glen Taylor will be back next year. He's gone from being a nice glue guy during first part of the season to being glued to the bench last several games. Too bad imho as he is a very solid defender who just needs to be more confident offensively.

Coach English has done a nice job with this team: surviving loss of their best player early, integrating new guys, competing in just about every game and utilizing the Oduro/Carter two man plays with options. Looks like a solid HC
Time will tell of course but looks a lot better than solid. I like him a lot, ever since I saw his post game presser after SJU beat them earlier in the year.

Some truth to that but , Carter didn’t score as easily as Oduro did .
Soriano totally exposed again . He just isn’t as good as Oduro , Igohdoro , Clingan , Kalkenbrenner , etc .

We got way too excited thinking he was going to double double his way to a great last season . He looks tired and spent .
Maybe left too much on all the Pitino practices .

Rick built the team around Soriano. Made him a captain. Soriano has wilted under the role. When it matters he misses free throws, layups and fouls his man three times on a row.
It’s not all on him but he really has been disappointing the last three weeks. You always want max effort and strong sense of grinding when things go sideways. And he doesn’t exhibit these qualities!

We need players 10x better then him.

We actually don't. Taylor is a nice Big East rotation player. He helped us in November and December, before Pitino randomly sat him against Butler (of course w/out any questioning from the beat reporters) & then decided to not go back to him from there. He's a guy who has size, athleticism, can shoot a 3, and can help any team in the country.

Totally agree. I was really impressed with his halftime adjustments at the MSG game. His team plays smart and really hard.
