Providence (MSG), Wed., Jan. 10, 6:30p, FS-1

I've been to many Providence/SJU games. I will say this -- maybe it was where I was sitting, but the group of opposing fans around me was probably the worst I've seen at the Garden in some time. Maybe its the bad start, Hopkins injury, the Cooley situation, the fact that they are scared like hell of the prospect of us having Pitino, or some combination, but plenty of adults acting like children and drunk 20s somethings out of their minds. I couldn't believe some of the stuff I was hearing and seeing, and I've been going to NY sporting event for 30+ years.
That's nothing new with Providence fans.

Crowd wasn’t huge but was louder than usual. PC fans were a smaller percent of the crowd but were loud but respectful at least in my area. I had 6 friends come to this game. One is a PC fan and other just liked basketball. 3 already got tickets to the Marquette game. Fun wins like tonight draw more of the casual fan in consistently. Marquette game should have a really good crowd. I also would be remiss to not mention how awesome the Lacrosse team was. Get them and other St. John’s team at every game.

The only problem I had with him all night was shooting that trey off the inbounds…and I didn’t hate it.

I thought he was going to shoot himself into a 3-8 night when he started 3-4 but then he started feeding Soriano and letting him eat. It was a very mature approach. He played extremely calm.

This was definitely his best game of the year.
Agree. He was Jose Andres tonight feeing Joel. I gained weight watching it

BTW 43 pages plus the 13 peeled off from this thread to the attendance thread 57. Sir Eric The Page Counter over under was 56

Good crowd tonight, lots of energy from both sides. More to learn from a 2 point nail biter than a double digit blowout. On to Omaha.

P.S. There are a line of season ticket holders that sit in front of me and they I don't think I've ever seen them clap, cheer, get energized at all this season. They showed no emotion tonight. All they did was stand up for PC's final possession like everyone else. Waste of seats IMO. They just sit there quietly all game. They're older gentleman but not freaking 80. Then people wonder why we don't have a homecourt advantage and Pitino wants to play at CA more. Show just a little life out there!

Just got back from the game. Thought it was cruise control after the first half, but in retrospect the second half was so much more exciting, so I will take it. We are on the other end of this type of game so many times in recent years, I don't give a crap that we let them back in a few times.

Carter is an animal. That kid can play for me anytime. Props to him.

I saw the same thing even leaving the Garden. We don't always behave in Queens but I will take our fans any day over some of the fans of other teams.

Can anyone explain why Soriano was out 25 feet from the basket trying to guard Carter in the late stages of the game and fouled him shooting a 3 ?

Pitino needs an Anchor on Remote to pull Joel back anytime he’s wandered past the foul line .
Coach has specifically talked about this issue in at least 3 press conferences. He is well aware of fact Joel can’t cover small guards. They are working on it. Every team that plays us tries to exploit that mismatch.

This post should get you banned from this site. You are criticizing “older gentlemen” — season ticket holders for many years— because they don’t cheer to your liking? Waste of seats? That they paid for? You, my friend, are a jerk. Have some respect. My uncle, who is 100 years old, has been a season ticket holder for 50 plus years. He travelled to Charleston for the tournament this year. And he also fought in the Pacific during WW II. And you have the temerity to say his seat is wasted? Shame on you.

Fair assessment but our guards did not do a great job of denying the ball to the Friar backcourt. Pierre and Carter got off 34 shots!

Coach Pitino gets a B+ because he 1. Allowed Soriano to roam too far from the basket. 2. Had a freshman (Dunlap) in the game in the final 5 minute crunch instead of Taylor.
3. Never made the emphasis of denying Carter the ball in the final minutes thus almost allowing one player to almost change the outcome of the game. Two of our losses this season (Michigan and Boston) our guard defense cost us where we were the better team.

Back to Jenkins, without him we lose easily tonight and hopefully now you realize how much Wilcher needs to improve.
They beat us badly on that end, but I really feel Pitino was saving heavy zone for bigger games including at Providence later. He went to it shortly out of necessity. He also only put Alleyne on Carter in the second half late.

Saving some tricks in a round-Robin format league is important.

The three from the corner on the inbound was a set play. If that was your problem then it wasn't with him, it was with Pitino calling that play.
