Providence (MSG), Wed., Jan. 10, 6:30p, FS-1

Providence is gritty. Their last game at Creighton they trailed by 16pts in the 2nd half. They rallied and cut the lead to one. Give them credit. We threw a haymaker at them (jumped out 20-5) and they never withered. Kudos to us after we gave up the lead to answer with a 17-3 run.

Not to toot my own horn but I feel…

The Best pick/screen of the night was set by yours truly for Fan since 65 and Mrs.Fan since 65 on a packed LIRR train. 😁

Coach Pitino would have been impressed
I got on the 9:35 train to Babyon out of Jamaica and there were a ton of St. John’s fans. Way more packed than usual.

I am going to take the optimistic view.

While the team had stretches of sloppiness (and the refs did a great job of aiding in the game becoming a crapfest), they did not fold when they went down in the second half.

Providence hit them with lethal combinations, but SJU responded with a flurry of their own.

They are growing because they showed no fight after falling behind in the Michigan game.

The important thing is 12-4, 4-1.

We will all take it and move closer to a tournament bid.

I do not see it yet, but I also never saw it in Champagnie but did see it in Shamorie Ponds so what do I know. RJ to me plays like the game is too boring or slow for him. He gives off the appearance that he is only giving like 75% of effort. His way of play is mysterious to me. He will make an excellent play and then it can be followed up with a WTF are you thinking.
One thing he does that I don't like is that he tries to be too cute around the rim when he should go up strong.

Just got home. It was my first game back at MSG since before COVID. Had an amazing time with my son. Wonderful seats courtesy of a very generous poster. Game started out great but Providence has a lot of fight and we had no answer for Carter. We survived and advanced. Will be back for Marquette!

Feel like they’ve gotten to the point you can say another good road win and taking care of business vs DePaul and Georgetown locks them into the tournament.
Can anyone explain why Soriano was out 25 feet from the basket trying to guard Carter in the late stages of the game and fouled him shooting a 3 ?

Pitino needs a Anchor on Remote to pull Joel back anytime he’s wandered past the foul line .

The only problem I had with him all night was shooting that trey off the inbounds…and I didn’t hate it.

I thought he was going to shoot himself into a 3-8 night when he started 3-4 but then he started feeding Soriano and letting him eat. It was a very mature approach. He played extremely calm.

This was definitely his best game of the year.
Fair assessment but our guards did not do a great job of denying the ball to the Friar backcourt. Pierre and Carter got off 34 shots!

Coach Pitino gets a B+ because he 1. Allowed Soriano to roam too far from the basket. 2. Had a freshman (Dunlap) in the game in the final 5 minute crunch instead of Taylor.
3. Never made the emphasis of denying Carter the ball in the final minutes thus almost allowing one player to almost change the outcome of the game. Two of our losses this season (Michigan and Boston) our guard defense cost us where we were the better team.

Back to Jenkins, without him we lose easily tonight and hopefully now you realize how much Wilcher needs to improve.

Just got back from the game. Thought it was cruise control after the first half, but in retrospect the second half was so much more exciting, so I will take it. We are on the other end of this type of game so many times in recent years, I don't give a crap that we let them back in a few times.

Carter is an animal. That kid can play for me anytime. Props to him.

I've been to many Providence/SJU games. I will say this -- maybe it was where I was sitting, but the group of opposing fans around me was probably the worst I've seen at the Garden in some time. Maybe its the bad start, Hopkins injury, the Cooley situation, the fact that they are scared like hell of the prospect of us having Pitino, or some combination, but plenty of adults acting like children and drunk 20s somethings out of their minds. I couldn't believe some of the stuff I was hearing and seeing, and I've been going to NY sporting event for 30+ years.

Great start which is what I expected. PC closed gap twice all game. Need to learn how to respond better. PC at the end was playing to win & we were playing not to lose. Something odd about SJ teams…maybe except some Ponds led teams, we seem to always play nervous or scared in tight games in big moments. Opponents make FT’s in their sleep in crunch time & we are nervous & miss…you can feel it. Thank god for RJ reb or this would have been a disaster. Up 7-8 with 2 min left the game is usually over.

But a W is a W and I cannot believe we’re 4-1. Feels so weird but loving it! Go into Omaha playing with house $. If we win we may be ranked going into Hall who might be as well. Going to be very tough obviously not expecting W. Johnnies take yrs off my life but we’re finally in striking distance of NCAAT! To be firmly in at this point is AMAZING. Still have work to do but right on track.
