Providence (MSG), Sat., Feb. 11, 12 Noon, FOX

From a scouting and team chemistry standpoint, the biggest mistake CMA made here was thinking Curbelo would be a good fit. He had a projected Big East first team point guard returning, and somehow thought moving him to SG would be a wise move. Not sure why he believed that pairing up 2 smaller guards that weren't outside threats was a good idea. Posh was giving CMA 30+ minutes a game. CMA didn't need another PG. What was needed was a reliable back-up or a shooting guard that could cover the point if need be. The season was doomed because of CMA's decision.
That profile you described kind of matches Stef Smith (sg who could back up pg) and we saw that wasn’t the answer either.

Curbelo not working out is one thing but I think it’s low hanging fruit to say it was an obvious poor decision to take him in the first place.

I get that ST John’s can’t turn down talent, but again 2 small guards that can’t shoot was more likely to fail than not

I agree with Amaseinyourfac that Anderson couldnt turn down the opportunity to get Curbelo. You hope you can make it work with two talented point guards but Curbelo is certainly an enigma.
At certain times he is cheering his team on from the bench and a few minutes later he is showing up the coaching staff by engaging in a three course meal on the bench.

And then he was magically good or Anderson coached him up real good? Lol
It is really hard to play well with sporadic mins and shots which makes what Storr did early on incredible!
Wheeler had obvious skills which would clearly come through in practice if you had a competent coach observing said practice which we do not.
Was the same with Hardy and Brownlee with Norm
Wheeler was in his 6Th year in college and had shown nothing close to that level of play ever at any point in his career. Hardy and Brownlee both showed glimpses in there first year as D1 players that made many believe norm was poorly utilizing them. In one case norm didn’t get output out of kids who eventually proved to be the difference makers we needed. In the other, CMA got more out of a player than he had ever showed capable of.

Storr was a freshmen figuring out how to compete at this level in all other areas besides scoring the ball. Yesterday you pointed out Pinzon’s defensive shortcoming’s so obviously you have that ability. I thought it took too long to get him major minutes but don’t think he was ready for 25 right off the bat. If you want to make the argument that those games didn’t matter anyway and look where the season has gone since, then sure.

Joe Toussante, who others have mentioned as an alternate and perhaps better option, who instead transferred to WVU, also couldn’t shoot.

I agree 100% you want shooters in the backcourt. It’s not an excuse for the coach cause look at what’s taking place now, but it seemed the options were non-shooting guards. Which brings us to the point we are at now wondering who the new coach will be.

In fact only time I can remember two 6 foot or less guards starting together was Boo Harvey and Michael Porter. Despite the fact that both were significantly more talented than Posh and Curbelo they struggled as well. Now struggling back then was limping in as a 9th seed I believe. Boo could shoot and Porter wasn’t a bad shooter either and jumped to the moon. But Boo played much better the year he came back without Porter.
Now he did play with Buchanan but he was a much more complimentary player.
The difference is that Harvey and Porter were teammates on San Jacinto before transferring here together.

Their tandem could have been successful if Porter had put the work.

Unlike Harvey, Porter just used his tremendous athletic ability to dominate JC, and thought it would be the same in the Big East.

How the hell does this coaching staff allow Curbelo to eat popcorn on the bench during a game? F*cking ridiculous. He immediately should have been sent to the locker room and then suspended. That's one of the reasons I can't get behind this staff. Among others, as so many have stated.

Pinzon not running back is not a deficiency it is a choice.
Wheeler was on a perennial good team, ST John’s is awful
Matt Brust played in 3 games at UNC and was a 3 year starter here
Ron Rowan didn’t play at ND and was a starter here.

So what you’re saying is we need to find a white kid who is currently under utilized at a different high major school?

Again I understand why ST John’s would have to do because a lack of options. But that is telling in itself, no?

I sold my MSG ticket for the 1,000 win on eBay for $25 after the game. At least I got some of my money back! 😜
I kept my ticket for the 1000 game with the intention of selling it after K retired. But on the NCAA trip to charlotte Lavins last year we go down and end up staying at the hotel Duke is staying out. K. The entire staff wearing Duke stuff. The guy checking us in was super nice life long duke fan. I asked him if there were any chik filet's near and told him we had never been to one and wanted to try it. He gives us over $50 probably close to $100 in free coupons for free literally we never spent a penny at the chic filet. When we checked out I told him on gonna send him Coach K's 1000 win at MSG it's in mint condition and it's free. He didnt believe me. When he got it he called me legit crying that I actually sent it to him. He definitely deserved that ticket more than me

Just because there's some facts to your argument doesn't mean fallacies aren't present.

Ron Rowan played 17 minutes a game during his freshman season at Notre Dame. I believe he dealt with some injuries (if my recollection is on point) his sophomore season prior to transferring. Rowan only played 11 minutes a game as a fourth year junior at St. John's. He was a fifth year senior when he started on the one seed team. I'm fairly confident in saying he would've logged major minutes had he stayed at Notre Dame.

I liked Rowan, so I'm not knocking him, but merely poking holes in your argument.

I'm always grateful when a player chooses to come here over other options give our history over the last 20 years, but I don't think it was a coincidence that the team played better, more controlled basketball without Curbelo yesterday.

It was great watching a game with no scratch your head turnovers
