With just three games left and one home game, this game is an absolute must win. If we are at full strength, must the ball deftly, and simply don't stand around taking shots that opponents dare us to take, we will be fine.
But see that's why I think we will be in for a tough one. The formula to beat us is out. Throw a zone at us, cut off our penetration and force us into 3 point shots. If we don't hit from early in the game and get down early it could be a long night.
While that is a formula, when our guys make their shots they are bonafide zone busters at every position. They can all get on a roll at once, and as soon as we make a couple, we have to be defended out there, and then that opens up the penetration for drives to the hoop or drive and dish. The answer to this would be to be patient, but with momentum everything helps us. Opponents panic and come out to get us, they rush shots on their offensive end, we have more defensive rebound opportunities which helps our transition game.

Keep in mind we have just won 5 out of 7 Big East games and only Providence proved to be a nemesis. We can beat ourselves by hoisting the first three available with 20 seconds on the clock, or we can be smart, rotate the ball well and get good looks.

I agree the formula looks simple, but every starter can make good looks from 3 and we just have to control the game that way. It is very much an easier said than done formula, especially since we don't have a post man.

Enjoy the game fellow fans. I no longer attend Carnesecca games due to a number of personal reasons. Taking care of myself and an elderly parent being primary reasons. Mully getting his 20th win was important to me. For me everything else is gravy. God bless you all.

I don't think they can keep up with us on offense if we are making our shots at around a 40% clip from 3. We are still very overdue for a red hot shooting game from beyond the arc. It's been like high 20%-low 30% for what feels like forever.
Just a quick point. There are 5 teams in America shooting 40% or more from 3. Only 2 are from the big 7 conferences (Creighton and Va Tech). Marquette is close as well. STJ shoots 36% from 3. It's who they are and that is an average shooting team. They are going to have hot nights and when they do they will win. However, it's more important for them to figure out how to win when they shoot to their average or worse since that is going to happen more frequently.
Not asking for 40+% average I mean one game.
I understand that but rather than relying on and wishing for a situation where they shoot above average, which I agree would be nice, I'd rather have them prepared to win even if they don't.

Needless to say, Xavier heads into St. John's short-handed. Keonte Kennedy took time away for personal reasons before Villanova and Elias Harden is suspended for the game.

Marginal bench guards

Damn that’s good for us. Harden hit some timely threes over the weekend against Nova. The less scoring they have on the floor the better

With those two guys out Xavier will only go 7 deep. We will be the deeper team for a change. Every little advantage helps.

Do we know if Mustapha is playing?
The other thing to watch is, does Mullin continue to go deep into our bench?
I hope so, since I think we'll need Roberts and Earlington to bang against X's bigs and protect Clark and Keita.

Thought this deserved it’s own thread since it’s so crazy.

Xavier has a 37-year streak of conference records of .500 or better. THIRTY-SEVEN years!

Long-suffering St. John’s can be the one to end that. How appropriate.

Not sure about Heron yet.

Earlington will probably get minutes again tomorrow. As long as him and Roberts can bring some energy and fight on the boards for a couple of minutes that’ll be huge

Xavier's strength is scoring in the paint because of their size. The combination of their being short handed and Mullin relying on his bench much more lately makes this a game SJU should employ a pressing defense for substantial minutes.

Absolutely.
I hope Mullin thinks likewise.
It’s the way to beat X hands down, like we did Seton Hall at home.
