Bright spots:

1. Trimble has a role on this team and played with great passion tonight. The next "Trimble transfer" thread I see I'm reporting to Mods. We need him.
2. Really like what I see from Roberts. Please give him more minutes.
3. The game ended.
I thought Figgy was excellent as well.

I would like to see us press these bigger teams more. We had nine scholarship players available. Height isn’t as important in a frenetic game.

He's been excellent all year, with the exception of two or three games.

One of the reasons I'm confident that next year won't be a disaster, is the fact that he will be returning.

Next year won’t be a disaster imo. Don’t know exactly what the roster will look like obviously but assuming everyone except Ponds/Heron/Clark return it could be a fun year with a lot of new faces

That depends on your definition of fun. If clanking a lot of threes in the 30% range is fun, you will have a ball watching this team. If the guys we have now are 50% in conference, with a good chance that they end up 8 and 10, next year will be a rebuilding season.

Lots of good criticism here about our weaknesses . Two most important in my mind not seen yet are the following;
1)In recent weeks , opponents have taken Ponds out of the game and our offensive flow by doubling him at top of the key.Figgy is triple teamed on his drives across the key. There are men open and they never dish to open man. This should be rehearsed daily in practice

2)Since we are now using nine man rotation with our quick young freshman,we should be pressing MUCH more to compensate for our rebounding defiency. We should create chaos out there! For at least half the game.Puzzling why not done.

Re:#1. One of the open guys is usually Simon. I like Simon more then some others on here, but that does not give us any offensive advantage.

Even Simon may not come back. He's a candidate for graduate transfer, and I believe Paultzman has said it's 50/50 at best, that he returns.

But even so, Figgy will be a better returnee then anyone from the 2011 or 2015 teams, which basically started from scratch after their seasons ended. Figgy, at the very least, is a great starting point. I think he's been our second best player this year.

Chris Mullin: “DePaul just did this to us. This was a replay of what happened here.” #sjubb
It's what DePaul did to us, what Xavier did to us, what Providence did twice to us. We play DePaul and Zavier in our last 2 games. Will anything be different?

True about Simon, he makes too many mistakes out there with the ball.
What you think about pressing more?
That's true too. Seems like every loose ball or 50/50 rebound went their way. Also, at least 3 shooting fouls called on us with 1 second left on the shot clock. Just brutal. But, it boils down to hustle. They had more of it. If we are in better position, those breaks go our way. My best takeaway from this game is the energy that Roberts brought.
Agree on the 50/50 balls which seemed more like 90/10 balls to their advantage. Some of it was being out hustled but some of it was just bad freaking luck.

Hard.

We're not very deep, and are prone to fouling. Even with the recent extension of the bench, it's the taller, non-athletic guys who have been playing more.

In addition to not being a deep team, we've had six Big East games affected by an injury to a key player. More then that, it's 4 different guys who have missed the 6 games (I'm counting Simon as not playing at Creighton - he did, but was gone after the opening minutes). Pressure defense gets better with continuity and repetition (so does halfcourt offense). We really have not had much of a chance to work with that.

We deserved to lose from the very beginning.
Why was Simon playing most of the game, certainly not for defensive reasons.Afterall, he held Marshall to 20 plus points.
I counted 4 turnovers by Simon in the first half.
t wouldn't mind seeing Trimble or Roberts get more of Simon's playing time. He was invisible tonight.
Our defense was horrendous, allowing wide open threes in the first half.
Thought Ponds was once again auditioning for the NBA concentrating on passing in the first half.
Hopefully Mullin realized that our full court pressure at the end of the game seemed to energize us.
I would prefer more penetration against Xavier's man to man defense instead of Clark and Figueroa 3point bombs. Maybe, just maybe we might get to the foul line.
I don't know what our game plan was but not surprised that Xavier's coach outcoached Mullin.

This edition of St. John's basketball has me thinking like Charlie Brown kicking a football.
May still be 30 games but winning % has gone up in conf from 28% to 35%.

We all want more but .500 this year isnt awful.
Not if we finish at .500, doubtful.

I won’t lose sleep if Simon decides to transfer. I love the kid’s defense, but his offense has regressed to the point of being unwatchable. His handle is horrible, his shooting is worse, and he might be one of the worst finishers I’ve ever seen.

I still think SJU needs to win 1 of these remaining games to secure themselves a bid. If I’m the selection committee, I don’t put them in if they drop Xavier, DePaul, Xavier to end the season.
