(POST-GAME) Xavier, Thur. Feb. 28, 6:30pm, FS-1 / 970AM

This game certainly makes you wonder why Big East Refs appear to have a hard on for St. John's.The obvious discrepancy in foul shooting attempts was truly ridiculous. But some of that has to do with the way we play defense. We utilize way too much use of the arms and upper body...and we are always trying to block the shot (as opposed to offering resistance and using chest and legs. All our opponents now are following the book established ten games ago. You zone St. John's and play it high...maybe a 3-2 or 2-1-2. Since Mullin loves to diddle diddle the ball around at the top of the key, and we waste time doing nothing. It also serves to neutralize Ponds as the threat he should be. Simon's new reluctance to shoot the three, adds additional pile up on Ponds. Those defenses, because they are so high, takes away comfortable three point shooting. Have you noticed the bombs we're hoisting up from Union Turnpike? Someone has to explain to Ponds that he doesn't have Steph Curry's range. And speaking of Shamorie, what has happened to his nifty off the glass game? He's been throwing up bricks for awhile now. The early in the season, any angle off the glass during penetration, was almost always "count it". It made a huge difference last night's game. I also couldn't understand the Mullin barrage of bench players. He apparently loves Williams, Kieta, Trimble and Roberts now and uses them with disregard for score and situation. . OK, Trimble to his credit played half way
decent last night, but still, I think you always have to play the odds. And last night, Roberts gave him some really good minutes....then he took him out.....and the kid never returned....go figure? But the elephant in the room yesterday is still the absence of Heron. The announcers were SO POOR in pointing out that SJU has an extremely thin bench, and cannot afford to lose it's second leading scorer. It's really that simply. The Xavier defense was weakest from it's sides, and that's where Heron does the most damage. Another thing that really gets my goat in these games is the failure of these Big East Refs to recognize walking and three seconds violations in our games. There are teams...Villanova,
Georgetown, Seton Hall, Providence, and Xavier, who have players that walk all over the place. You CANNOT pick up your dribble, take another step, then fly into the air, come down, and the start moving your feet again...THAT IS NOT LEGAL. Yet there are refs who tolerate this as a matter of routine. We got stung three times last night with similar walking, that turned into someone's else's three, after a pass off. All three were huge in the final outcome. Also, I have counted twelve seconds for opponents in the paint. If we are going to play undersized, then how important is it when referees ignore this call. How many times have you seen it called?Truthfully, I am really blown away by the incompetence of Big East Refs this year. Anyway, we gave Xavier a run for the vast majority of this game, and the only player who really showed up was Figgy. I didn't expect to win this one, and we didn't. Still, we were on the losing end of a lot of changeable circunstances, particularly random ball bounces, and with a tad more luck, and a real home court, who knows?
Once Heron was not playing everyone else needed to step up. They didn't. Keita proved useless. Ponds played casual point guard. Clark was a foul machine again. Simon was Simon. It became a no win situation. Not much to do with coaching or adjustments. The combination of players on the court at any given time was inferior to X. Sad statement in year four.
Before they were bought by Ford, the saying was that if you wanted to drive a Jaguar you needed to buy two, because one would always be in the shop. Our current team reminds me of the old Jaguar because as soon as a starter is out, things just do not run smoothly.

Because we rely too much on our starting 5. Really don’t have a BE caliber 6 th man. Regretably , the loss of Owens really hurt.

One of my best friends has owned a Jag for 40 years. That same Jag has been garaged 30 of those 40 years for mechanical problems. He refuses to get rid of it.
Kind of how we take St. John's basketball.;)

But you know your stuff my friend. Other than the two stars of the team, Ponds and Heron, there is not one other dependable scorer. Figgy comes to play but lacks a good handle on the ball. Simon is unreliable. Clark is completely one dimensional with no inside game. Keita is a bust. I've seen enough to know Roberts, a freshman project, is a better option. I think Mullin, usually slow to get it, finally realized it. That's our team and it's not enough for top competition day in and day out since none of these players have exhibited consistency this year, especially Shamorie Ponds. His decline is the most disturbing thing that has affected team cohesion.
We are way past the blame game as the most objective fans saw all this coming by last Spring. Matt should never have been the sole recruiter. Mullin and Mitch should have been more involved in the off season. Blah, blah, blah.
We will likely win a couple of more games with the Big East tournament and Mullin will get to 22 wins. It won't get beyond that. A good season but it could have been a great season because we were were one Femi away from that had Mullin realized that in April.
Finally, enough with the insulting personal shots at fellow posters like Marillac wanting to go mano a mano with Fordham.
Other than Fordham likely kicking his ass, there is nothing to gain with calling fans old, senile, balding, stupid, etc.
If you can't take civilized discourse then take to Johnny Jungle.

Dropping the McRib is the cultural equivalent of Coke going to New Coke...unforgivable...

It's what DePaul did to us, what Xavier did to us, what Providence did twice to us. We play DePaul and Zavier in our last 2 games. Will anything be different?
I still think SJU needs to win 1 of these remaining games to secure themselves a bid. If I’m the selection committee, I don’t put them in if they drop Xavier, DePaul, Xavier to end the season.
I'd hate to say it, but I think we're losing the last 2 games. We just can't beat teams like this.
The good news is...just when you think we are DOA, we fool you and win...fingers crossed

Remember how I said you never made a post that made me mad last week? I take it back with this McRib lovefest. I had one and started dry heaving.

Mullin isn’t the only Coach that believes Rebounding is a over rated stat . Lavin, on TV, has said the same thing on several occasions . That being said , maybe we need to accept the reality that our Personnel are not built to be a consistent BE rebounding team . We saw our guys battle hard underneath tonight but , it was noticeable that Xavier’s bigs were able to still control the Rebound , put back or slap out to another player . Our team is undersized in the BE . It’s a reality lived with all season . It’s not changing against much bigger opponents . And , many fans still talk about how our Talent should be enough to overcome nearly every other team . I don’t think our Team is superior in talent to most other BE opponents .!
I'll be the first to admit I was wrong on my season predictions but if my memory serves me correct didnt you also predict something like us winning the BET, winning at Duke, Sweet 16 and Mullin Big East coach of the year ?

Hopefully you are right on the BET and Sweet 16
None of that is going to happen but you can dream I’m just hoping they get a bid especially if they finish below .500 in the league

Yeah against teams like sju and nova, DePaul and Xavier is a whole different animal.

Keita is a chick, start Josh and give him 30minutes. Got nothing to lose, getting 0 from keita, Ellinton 12-15min, again, what do we have to lose.
