(POST-GAME) Xavier, Thur. Feb. 28, 6:30pm, FS-1 / 970AM

There just seems to be such a lack of fundamentals. No boxing out or rebounding on either end, not many smart shots, ball movement could be better, and not able to finish at rim. If I were running practice, I'd have 2 managers with football pads banging into guys as they went to make layups with padded mats under the hoop to be safe. They need to get comfortable with contact and they need to learn to focus on getting the ball in the hoop before worrying about contact. I'm sure they think it's below them at this point, but practice using the window on the backboard. It's there for a reason. We're seriously the only team I've watched that cannot finish 75% of our layups. Clark missed a shot last night then got the rebound and could not be setup anymore perfectly to easily put it back in. He missed, X rebounds and scores on the other end. Simon has missed god knows how many layups and even Ponds has missed several in the past several games. I see skill and fundamentals from PC, X, SHU, Creighton, G'Town, etc. but not from us. Not sure it can fall on anything but coaching.

Keita and Clark are just not physical players around the basket. They do not engage in contact either offensively or defensively for guys with big strong bodies. Probably why things did not work out with Martin and Izzo. Play within 8 feet of the basic is based on physical strength, footwork and a willingness to attack the ball. These 2 guys significantly lack in this area. Causes us significant problems which is difficult to overcome against certain match-ups.

Ken Pom has us at 63, and behind Seton Hall. Starting to look like NIT. Slim chance we any at Depaul or Xavier.

If Heron plays we are beating DePaul. Shamorie missed the last DePaul game, we aren't going to lose to them. This game was frustrating to watch, Xavier is a bad matchup for us because of their size. However to have such a disparity in whistles at home is mind boggling. It wasn't remotely close, it's like the big east is trying to push another team into the NCAA tournament. Some of the calls against us defensively were atrocious, and they were allowed to hand check and be physical defensively the entire game. Hats off to Naji, he's going to play in the NBA, plays both sides of the court, really good player.

I would guess that anyone in the field will be a bad matchup for us if we even make it. That's because other programs seem to have a recruiting strategy that, wait for it, includes getting big, strong and athletic bodies to play a game that requires same. I'm starting to wonder what the strategy is here.

Not sure why some people are saying we can lose out and still make the tourney. We still control our destiny, but we have to win at least 1 more game between the final 2 reg season and the BET. We are not a lock yet at all. It's scary to think that with this much talent in such a down year for the conference that we just cannot be a consistent winner in year 4 of Mullin with two 5 star players plus one of our best players ever. If this is the case, what does this say about the near future? Mullin's currently over his head and absolutely needs a real assistant. Thankfully it sounds like this will be an ultimatum at the end of the season.

We knew for several years that we needed bigs. We begged. Please, please go out and get bigs. We end up with the softest big man in the country in Keita. Roberts looks like he has potential as a 4 year player, but man you have to bulk up. Don't understand how some guys are coming in so skinny. Owens never gained a pound here it seems then he goes to TT and puts on like 30 or 40 lbs of muscle. What's going on with that? How is it that Xavier finds a Hankins in D freaking 2 and we can't find anyone? How is it that every other team has 6'11 and 7 foot mammoths who have a real skill set in the paint? No one's asking for Ewing in his prime. All I'm asking for is a 3 star mammoth who can't shoot a lick but can rebound, get physical, dunk, and finish consistently at the rim. Being athletic is good, but you have to have the balance of being athletic and skillful. Will we ever have a guy who can hit a consistent jump hook with some nice touch who can finish?

Just sick of this program having to scrape the bottom of the barrel just to maybe eke out an NCAA bid. Go ahead and call me "entitled" or "spoiled" but this team was supposed to yawn its way to a bid this year. We were supposed to have a Villanova type year where we get around 11 or 12 wins in conference, stay in the top 25 for much of the season, and lock up a bid easily. Lots of red flags. We have the same conference record as rebuilding teams including some new coaches.

Failure to make adjustments, both on offense and defense, is why we got clubbed by Xavier.
We have not learned to box out underneath.
Use the full court press from the start.
We're getting contributions from the bench, use them more!
Ponds is clearly not sound physically and he is now over-complaining when not getting calls that he should. Mullin is no help there. Less complaining, more coaching. Still not good on using timeouts for adjustments and changing the opponents pace. Need to fix the coaching situation in the offseason.

All the teams that are bad match ups for us, we can be a bad match up for also, if we dictate the style of play. Problem in the beginning was we turned them over but didn't score. In half court we struggled with the 1-31 because the feed to the foul line was not open.Unfortunately we don't dictate style of play or adjust very well.

Mike , the reality of this Season , which has resulted in 20 Wins and a very likely NCAA bid , has been topsy turvy . So far, we are .500 in BE play in a tough , evenly talented League from top to bottom . We have 8 league Wins and the entire Country, except Stu Jackson and Val Ackerman , know it’s really 9 wins . We have 2 away games left , DePaul and rematch with Xavier. If Heron plays and is 100 percent and Ponds doesn’t have his Wrist in a Cast , we can win both . Not guaranteed but , it’s possible . If Heron doesn’t play , we can still possibly win 1 of the 2 . Possibly . Yes, we all had Great Exprctstions early in the Season and Pre Season . It didn’t turn out that way . Why ? The first BE Game vs Seton Hall was a travesty and was stolen from us in a Referree Error of total incompetence that the whole country saw in the following days . Mike Stephens ‘s horrible call was shown on TV a thousand times and every Announcer showed the tape or spoke about it for the next Week . The BE Administration said it was a Mistske call but , like the NFL did in the Saints vs Rams game , did nothing to correct a horrible error that decided a game . It seems the Refs in the BE took offense to the humiliation that Stephens deserved and our Team has been officiated unfairly for most of this BE Season . Culminating in last Nights game vs Xavier, whete that Officiatimg crew lost Control of the Game ! The BE should suspend all 3 officials ! AD Cragg should be demanding a meeting with Ackerman and Jackson . 33 free throws to 5 for us , is not credible officiating and shame on that Crew! But, I digress . Our Team has , in my opinion , done as well as possible , given the Injururies to 2 of our key players who did not play in 3 games . 2 of which we lost . I still believe Ponds is playing hurt and has been for 1/2 the BE Season . His production and scoring have been seriously impacted and it’s not like he has lost his Skills . As a result , his Season has not been what he and the team anticipated . Clark has been a nice player but , his game is largely 1 dimensional , Shooting . And , as results show, he is a streaky at best . Plus , his excessive fouling has hurt enormously . Forget the fact of our team being undersized . It’s a liability but , if other aspects of the game were performed better , that liability could be negated in some games . Simon is a Zero Plus and Minus Player . He misses 6-8 points a game with his faulty offense , which is a great obstacle to winning . True , he does offset his offense with 6-8 points he contributes by his defense , rebounding , steals , etc . But , it means in the scoring Column , he comes up short . It hurts us overall . Figgy and Heron have been great pick ups but, Heron has missed 3 BE games . 2 of which were losses . As for team composition , we lack the true BE indide player and , a reliable long range Zone Buster . Dixon was suppose to be that player but, it didn’t work out .So , Mike , the season is what it is at this point . You can keep up the Mullin critique all you want but, I think most of us are happy with 20 Wins , a likely NCAA bid and a chance to do damage in the BE tourney . Not so bad , considering what has taken place .

Very disappointing effort. Once again, this team, with the opportunity to perhaps lock up a bid for the Tournament came out, out of control, and flat as a pancake. I just don't get it. I know its unpopular here but they need to be .500 minimum in BE play and now probably need to win at least one BE tourney game to get in. They are backing themselves out and giving all the ammunition necessary to burst the bubble on selection Sunday.

Don't bother reading them all. I just presume that most posts are at least as dumb as mine.

Who said it was about a post.
I could have been referring to the game last night

For some reason it just seems that every time we have expectations of easily making the tourney, we just barely scrape our way in at the 11th hour if we get in at all. This has been the case for Lavin and Mullin is TBD but looks to be headed that way. It must be so weird being a fan of a team that dominates consistently most of the season and locks up a bid easily with zero sweat. Either the Big East really is that good (OOC teams feasted on the teams that beat us) or we are just that poorly coached. Think about it...Steele is a brand new head coach. Xavier is 8-8 and a few wins away from making the tourney after losing a ton including their head coach. SHU is right there and they are rebuilding after losing a ton. G'Town is still in the twilight of the Ewing era and they may make the tourney with several freshmen playing major roles. If this was Mullin's 1st or 2nd season with a young team or a reloaded team going around 8-8 in conference play, there would be a statue built. Once again, we have two 5 star players starting and Ponds, one of the best players to ever play for us in our over 100 yr history. Some would say "forget rankings, we aren't properly constructed with any real bigs". Well, whose fault is that? When you have rebuilding teams some of which have new coaches keeping up with you with all our advantages this year, that's a major, major red flag.

1. Trimble has a role on this team and played with great passion tonight. The next "Trimble transfer" thread I see I'm reporting to Mods. We need him.
2. Really like what I see from Roberts. Please give him more minutes.
3. The game ended.
I thought Figgy was excellent as well.
He's been excellent all year, with the exception of two or three games.

One of the reasons I'm confident that next year won't be a disaster, is the fact that he will be returning.
Next year won’t be a disaster imo. Don’t know exactly what the roster will look like obviously but assuming everyone except Ponds/Heron/Clark return it could be a fun year with a lot of new faces
Even Simon may not come back. He's a candidate for graduate transfer, and I believe Paultzman has said it's 50/50 at best, that he returns.

But even so, Figgy will be a better returnee then anyone from the 2011 or 2015 teams, which basically started from scratch after their seasons ended. Figgy, at the very least, is a great starting point. I think he's been our second best player this year.
I won’t lose sleep if Simon decides to transfer. I love the kid’s defense, but his offense has regressed to the point of being unwatchable. His handle is horrible, his shooting is worse, and he might be one of the worst finishers I’ve ever seen.
Much rather see Trimble out there than Simon at this point. His defense is good enough and he's becoming a m ore confident three point shooter and with that can open up the floor for us on offense. If Trimble can just put the ball on floor a little and take it to the hoop every once in while he would definitely be a much more effective player than Simon at this point.

I agree Mike, I do not believe that there is any way that we can lose out and still make the tourney. to be a solid lock we need one of the last two games and 1 in the Big East Tournament. If we lose out we need to play in Big East Championship game to earn a bid. I firmly believe that we have damaged ourselves that much with these bad losses at home even though we were missing a starter for each loss.

Mullin's post game comments are sounding like a broken record.SJU was out physicaled, out rebounded and the opportant controlled the pace, slowing the game down, eliminating SJU's transition game. Expect the same following the De Paul and Xavier games.
Perhaps the reason for that is SJU hasn't the size, strength or rebounding to compete with most of the big east rosters including De Paul and Xavier. Maybe before the season is over it is time to adjust to the opposition and do something to speed the pace of the game up.
Perhaps some type of press or some strategy that might have an effect on the outcome. One thing you can be sure of. De Paul and Xavier are going to be bigger and stronger than SJU next weak and are going to try to keep the game at a slow pace.

Have to make shots, and grab rebounds, to set up the fast pace, though. When we're not doing that, it's very hard.

Less chance you get out-physicalled if you rebound offensively rather than shoot and retreat.

It's what DePaul did to us, what Xavier did to us, what Providence did twice to us. We play DePaul and Zavier in our last 2 games. Will anything be different?
I still think SJU needs to win 1 of these remaining games to secure themselves a bid. If I’m the selection committee, I don’t put them in if they drop Xavier, DePaul, Xavier to end the season.
I'd hate to say it, but I think we're losing the last 2 games. We just can't beat teams like this.
