(POST-GAME) Villanova (MSG), Sun., Feb. 17, 5p, FS-1 / 570 AM

Great post but I disagree about us getting plenty of calls. It seemed like every call/non-call went against us in the first half and the refs were equally terrible to both teams in the second half.

Now we just need to get Ponds to bring back that one foot that he already has out the door and get him to mentally check back into the college game 100 percent. If that happens I can easily see a mini-tear and ruining the season of a few top-name teams in March.
And he has to stop hitting the floor after every wild-ass layup attempt. The officials are on to his game and he's not getting any calls. I emphasize "wild-ass". Out of control.
. One of the things that hasn’t been in our favor of late is Ponds not getting to the foul line as he usually does . To me , Ponds gets fouled or bumped on nearly every drive to the hoop , even throwing up some prayers that will never go in but, for which he should get a Call once in a while . I mean , he winds up on the floor a lot and since it isn’t Hockey or Soccer he isn’t flopping . I am also concerned for his missing 3 point shot in recent games . His game needs the flexibility to put it up or drive to the hoop and get fouled . If he isn’t hitting the 3 , it limits him to driving . Now , he is getting double teamed a lot but, he’s faced that before and still went wild . Mullin and Staff should look at ways to get him his shot with some screens or set plays . And , he is getting called for the ticky tacky calls on his 3 point defense way too much . I mean , he gets mauled going to the Hoop and doesn’t get a Call but, is nailed for a touch on the shooter after the shot is launched . What’s up ?

The refs greatly influenced both Nova’s run and then our’s. Very poor officiating overall.

They either realized the call disparity or they were trying to make it a close game. At one point Mullin turned to the head official in the second half and said “We’ve got five f*cking fouls and they only have one. They’re fouling us every possession, this is bullsh*t.” Three fouls were called on Nova in a blink of an eye.

Might be the biggest win of Mullin’s tenure at St. John’s. Sold out Garden. Huge win despite an awful first half on offense. This team really digs in on defense. Villanova knew they were in a game the whole way. That said, Ponds should go back to playing off the ball and let Simon set up and run the offense. He’ll score more, shoot more consistently and St. John’s would win more games. He’s just not a pro point guard.
.

Insane! If Ponds isn’t a pro point guard than Simon isn’t a HS point guard.
This Simon as a PG talk has baffled me for two years. He is so clearly unskilled and wild in the half court. Ponds is so good he can drive and make impossible passes to setup shooters all night and we can all think he sucked.

I think it's great that ex SJU players come back to attend games and even better that some poster is sharp enough to recognize that player and share that with the rest of us.

One of the most fun times I've ever had at a sporting event. I cannot remember a damn thing, everything is such a blur. What an atmosphere!!! What a win!!!
Other than the "It's Ova Nova" sign, the Post coulda' chosen a better picture. The place was insane for the 2nd half.

That's former Johnny Carmine Calzonetti with his arms folded, in that picture.

The Post’s back cover is “Forward, March”. Impossible to compete with today’s front cover:

Oh, the double entendres! Unfortunately, Carlos appears to be wearing a Mets hat.

Great time at a great game. My honey surprised me with tix for V-Day. Lots of fun in the middle of 'Nova fans. Great leaving the Garden with fans yelling, "Let's go Johnnies." Hit the LIRR home and had dinner at George Martin's bar in Rockville Centre. Sat next to 'Nova fans that were also at the game. They were good losers.
This team just won an amazing game, and took a big step toward the NCAA tournament, and we are arguing with one another?

Just f*cking stop!

Enjoy this win.
This is true. But when some needle at others I can't fault anyone for standing up for themselves.

Game threads have and always will be a joke. Same goes if I mic'ed up anyone at the game yesterday. If I put a Go Pro in the home of the staunchest Mullin fan again I highly doubt roses and sunshine were permeating when it was 29-10.

We should enjoy the victory. We've been all through a hell of a lot the past few years. But in the same respect everyone needs to stop drawing a line in the sand and taking pot shots at anyone who falls on the other side.

Just finished watching a replay of the game. Needed to watch again as it all seemed like a blur.
Just a few observations.
1- Ponds was epicly b-a-d. Missed shot after missed shot, poor decisions and so on. Anytime you can win without your best players top performance its a good sign. Hopefully he makes up for it at Providence.
2- LJ Figueroa saved the day. Played hard the whole game. Great job.
3- Mustapha also was max effort. He really is a key to this team.
4- Lack of depth and foul trouble is going to hurt us badly at some point. Clark commits too many careless fouls particularly early in games.
5- Jay Wright is a great coach. He also is a first class whiner. He is giving Boeheim a run as one of the biggest crybabies in college hoops. He whines (or "works" the official?) on every single call. His players never foul and everyone is against him. It clearly works for him. Is there a "coaching box" in college. On some possessions he is basically standing at mid court screaming.
On to Providence.

funny thing is, that it barely is upbeat. We could win the national championship and we'd all still be taking shots at one another lmao
This is the case with any message board/forum. Patriots, Yankees, to the best Football Teams in the world.

Knight, I live along the Babylon line and George Martin's always looks crowded. I've never been. How did you like it? I believe its primarily a steakhouse? Sorry for digressing but always looking for a good place to take the wife that is close.

My initial reaction was that Ponds was awful and that they won in spite of him, but so much of that is the impossible standard we hold him to.

Incredible comeback, great win.
Heron has been doing a much better job getting to the basket, don't know how he misses the rim on an 8 foot open shot though?
I thought one of the keys was the pressure Ponds, Simon and Figgy were putting on the Nova guards full court. Threw their offense off. These guys are so good at it as well, too bad it would exhaust them to do it more often.
Really sweated out every second Trimble and Keita spent on the court. Keita just finds a way to screw everything up, given a layup and he blows it. Trimble was off the charts timid on offense, after he dropped that pass, he actually paused to decide whether he was going after it or not.
Crazy thought, but do we have a bunch of late sleepers on this team? Early in the season we had some guys not start because they were late(it was an early afternoon game), it seems our worst games have been afternoon games. Certainly a bunch of guys didn't wake up until later on yesterday.

Great comeback win! Ponds and Clark not at their best, but the second half defense was unbelievable. My one complaint...can someone teach Keita to dunk. Comical that he missed it because he tried to lay it in off the backboard instead of throwing it down.

Yesterday's game is a prime example of why scheduling good teams with big NYC alumni numbers is good strategy. You end up with a decent number of opposition fans but selling out the garden and creating that fan involvement is well worth it.
It must mean a good pay day for SJU also.

That's what got me hooked when I started going to games in the early 80's. After the game everyone on the train talking St. John's
