(POST-GAME) Villanova (MSG), Sun., Feb. 17, 5p, FS-1 / 570 AM

The first half was bad, but we did have a game plan of getting to the foul line and we did. Unfortunately, we missed a ton of FTs and layups. Offense always looks better when you are able to hit a few jumpers.

Spent the afternoon in Orlando at my sister's. My brother-in-law is a big and knowledgeable college BB fan. First thing out if his mouth us, "How do you watch this out of control, poor BB IQ, poorly coached team game after game?"
Had no comeback, but this team certainly did. Just watched it. He wanted to watch it, but I wouldn't allow him until we left. Can't wait to bust his chops tomorrow.

Yeah, I didn't really think we took many crazy shots in the first half. Unfortunately, nothing was falling, and then our confidence went down, so we were aiming, not shooting.

Bottom line, and I've said this for awhile now, we have to make shots. That sets up the press, and everything else we do. Most teams use their defense, to set up their offense. We use our offense to set up everything else.

The Clark block was the defensive play of the game IMO, his two 3's were instrumental in the comeback as well.
He needs to be on the court for us. Unfortunately I would feel more comfortable with Ted Bundy living next to a sorority house than playing him with 3 or 4 fouls and expecting him to be smart for a few minuteSz He doesn’t even try to not foul. He picked up his second and third foul on the same possession. Then he had two uncalled fouls before his fourth.
He does need to be on the court and he is responsible for committing silly fouls, but this staff has had him in the gym for almost 3 seasons now, so they are responsible as well.

Awesome good news to wake up to a win, but twice as nice for a marquee win. They do their work down the stretch and we won’t have to worry come selection Sunday.

What a win! MSG was electric. I go to a ton of Ranger and a few Knick games (SJU season ticket holder) and I don’t think I’ve heard the Garden that loud in a LOOOOONG time. Terrific Job by Players, Staff and SJU fans. We are 4-1 in our last 5 BE games. Keep it rolling

Talk about things not going in...Gillespie, Pasqual, and Booth went 2 for 20 from the three point line. What do you think the odds might be on something like that? As much as Booth personally beat us in game one, he pretty much personally threw away the game for Villanova today. Congrats to "Figgy" who pretty much willed us to win this game with his fantastic hustle on the court. He was everywhere. You wouldn't think that with Ponds and Clark having such sub par games, that we would have had a chance. There was a point in the first half when I was tempted to shut it off. Goes to show you....Yogi was right! Still can't figure Mullin's substitutions, but I suppose he got away with it today. Personally can't stand how much walking the "Wildcats" get away with....hop-step-jumps with additional steps...go figure? Would have to think that barring a complete collapse against the league's bottom teams, the NCAA tournament should be a lock now. Would really love to repay Seton Hall. We really need to finish strong to enhance our tournament seeding. Right now, we would be in trouble.

It is amazing how he doesn’t even try to avoid fouls.

The same coach you said this about tonight while we trailed:

“Structured, well prepared, sharing ball team v polar opposite am sorry to say.”

Care to walk that back?
At the time I believed that, especially sharing ball comment. I did not think SJ could come back and was wrong. I am capable of owning what I say, unlike a certain hyperbolic, over the top, needy little man. Looking forward to your self imposed sabbatical post season “Coach”
Personal insults over a basketball game to someone several decades younger than you...really? And it wont be a sabbatical it’s permanent because I don’t want to be some pathetic old man who stalks boys and argues with guys in their 20s and 30s. Thanks for showing me what I don’t want to become.
Paultzman is one of our most respected posters. Your age related insults are reminiscent of another couple of posters who were overly pompous here and who obviously enjoy insulting each other more on Johnny Jungle where another expert specializes in telling fellow fans to FOAD.
You used to be good before your breakdown.
Embarrassing thread.
Simon’s shot was #7 on ESPN’s Top 10.[/quote

Should have been higher on the list
This game reminded me of the Big East barn burners in the 80's
One of the most exciting halves of basketball I've ever seen St John's play
I lost my voice yelling at the TV in the second half but well worth it!!
This game should serve as a catalyst for greater things to come this season
When we play with this energy and emotion, the sky's the limit
GO JOHNNIES!!!

Terrific win and comeback. The garden crowd was like a sleeping giant for us. We woke then up in the 2nd half. LJ, Heron. Thank you. You carried us. Simon, thanks for the little things. Something about MSG, probably the ice underneath but guys have been trying trying to warm their hands whenever they play there. Multiple occasions u see Clark, ponds, Simon blowing into their cupped hands to warm them. Need to ask the garden to turn up the heat a lil.
Now we just need to get Ponds to bring back that one foot that he already has out the door and get him to mentally check back into the college game 100 percent. If that happens I can easily see a mini-tear and ruining the season of a few top-name teams in March.
And he has to stop hitting the floor after every wild-ass layup attempt. The officials are on to his game and he's not getting any calls. I emphasize "wild-ass". Out of control.

Regarding Ponds....

It's a process through which a team peaks. There was a time when Heron was not within the flow of the offense. Figgy also disappeared for a while. Simon was awful for a stretch and now he is contributing again. My point is that we still have room for improvement. When a team is "clicking on all cylinders" it means all of the talent understands, embraces, and excels in their role. If we get there, we will finally attain the holy grail of consistency.
Might be the biggest win of Mullin’s tenure at St. John’s. Sold out Garden. Huge win despite an awful first half on offense. This team really digs in on defense. Villanova knew they were in a game the whole way. That said, Ponds should go back to playing off the ball and let Simon set up and run the offense. He’ll score more, shoot more consistently and St. John’s would win more games. He’s just not a pro point guard.
.

Insane! If Ponds isn’t a pro point guard than Simon isn’t a HS point guard.

Ponds is the best we have to play the point, but I agree he will not be a pro point guard. He is a 2G and does not have the intangibles of a good point guard.

It all happened soooo fast. As bad as the score was for most of the first half, after Simon's prayer was answered SJU was only down 11 and not in any foul trouble. This made the additional pressure that was used on defense in the second half possible. That pressure was the difference, 16 turnovers on Villanova, and many more times that they were forced to play in a less controlled manner than they are comfortable playing in. Simons defense was unbelievable, and there were times I thought we had cloned Figueroa and two of him were on the court. He was everywhere at once.

The atmosphere was fantastic. I was not at any of the 2010 MSG games, so for me this was the loudest I have heard the place since the Pittsburgh incident. Surely it was a factor. Villanova was rattled, and we actually got plenty of calls. At one point in the second half I looked up and Villanova was shooting over 80% from the line and we were at 62%, and from that point on I don't think we missed any, maybe one. Not so for Nova. The foul shooting in the last minute and a half protecting a lead was a beautiful thing to see.

The plan from Villanove was stop Ponds and you stop SJU. The plan makes sense, and a key was getting the ball out of Ponds hands more in the second half, and also Shamorie making some excellent kick-outs in the last ten minutes. With Heron and Figueroa around doubling Ponds over and over can backfire IF Shamorie buys in.

People were chanting in the hallways of MSG after the game, and my train home was packed with happy buzzing SJU
fans. It's been awhile since I have seen that. Great night all around.

Strange scenario about the game, had Ponds hit a few of his spin move layups would Figi have had to be our savior? In hindsight, glad it happened the way it didn’t
