(POST-GAME) Villanova (MSG), Sun., Feb. 17, 5p, FS-1 / 570 AM

This team just won an amazing game, and took a big step toward the NCAA tournament, and we are arguing with one another?

Just f*cking stop!

Enjoy this win.
This is true. But when some needle at others I can't fault anyone for standing up for themselves.

Game threads have and always will be a joke. Same goes if I mic'ed up anyone at the game yesterday. If I put a Go Pro in the home of the staunchest Mullin fan again I highly doubt roses and sunshine were permeating when it was 29-10.

We should enjoy the victory. We've been all through a hell of a lot the past few years. But in the same respect everyone needs to stop drawing a line in the sand and taking pot shots at anyone who falls on the other side.
The overall point was why even needle one another after a game like that one. I was not taking sides. I was giving a general stop sign.

And I do agree about the game threads. I do not post on them. But I wish I could get a score every once in a while, especially when I am out.
Well the needling after yesterday come from the biggest Mullin fans. After a loss it comes from those who can't stand him. Again it's getting back closer to the middle and overall respect that people have different opinions. But as we know about society and so many other factors it's a heavy ask.

Sorry folks haven't had the time to read previous post, so forgive if I repeat some.
First of all thanks to the great fans at MSG. You were awesome!
And if your energy didn't affect the recruits then they are not interested in our school.
Have to agree totally with analyst Sparnarkle regarding our layup attempts. It seems we throw up floaters on our drives. Ponds, for example, always falls away while shooting . Of course Figueroa is our best on floaters. I would appreciate it more if we would use our shoulder against the defender while driving closer, rather then take 12 feet floaters or hooks. That's why it's called a layup.
Does anyone get the feeling Keita would rather guard a guard. Heck, he even switches when the opposition is weaving.
Good defense against Booth and Paschall. Nice offense from Figueroa, Simon and Heron.
Can't afford to lose any starter to injury. Pray hard Redmen fans.

Trimble throws guys around. In two years he hasn’t given up an single inch in position in the post. In fact, his only weakness in the post (other than his height of course) is that when he’s really kicking a big’s arse and moving him out of the paint, he tends to foul pushing them away with his lower body.

We may never see a guy make more of an impact with basically no stats.

That turnover wasn’t his fault either...awful pass.

Great leaving the Garden with fans yelling, "Let's go Johnnies." Hit the LIRR home and had dinner at George Martin's bar in Rockville Centre. Sat next to 'Nova fans that were also at the game. They were good losers.
Knight, I live along the Babylon line and George Martin's always looks crowded. I've never been. How did you like it? I believe its primarily a steakhouse? Sorry for digressing but always looking for a good place to take the wife that is close.
I live in RVC. GM is ok. Not great, not bad, but ok.

The general rule of boards is attacking the post is OK, attacking the poster, not. As an example, someone called one of my posts ridiculous on Saturday. Fine by me, he has a right to his opinion and he gave his reasoning. It would be unreasonable to expect everyone to agree with you.

I did cross the line and called out Doc earlier, for which I apologize. Wasn’t necessary, and won’t happen again.

Some technical questions for after a win from someone who learned basketball before the three point line:

1. Broadcasters commented that Nova bangs opponents around but mostly with lower body and tends to get away with it...did STJ discover during halftime that out guys were stronger and quicker in their legs than Nova and start dishing out what Nova tried to do?

2. Does playing five out and the three point shot make Loscutoff and Willie Hall and Paul Silas and Lamont Middleton (to name a few) obsolete or is there still a place for the players who uses strength to control spacing in the paint and suck up rebounds and putbacks?

3. Ponds seems to get hit in his lower body on almost every drive but it is not called. Why?

Questions 1 and 3 have the same answer. I was taught by a coach I can't remember that coming from high to low with your arm to strip the ball will get you a foul every time. Come underneath and you may get away with it. The referees look for the obvious first, which is the hack across the arm. Body to body contact seems to come second. When Ponds is trying to do much much on his drives, like fading right or left, he seems to not get the body bump calls. He gets the calls when he heads directly to the hoop.

As for question 2, I have no idea how the staff would incorporate a player like Silas, or Wes Unseld, the ultimate space eater. But I would take either one anytime, anywhere. It would be nice to have that kind of presence on the court, and also on the bench and in the locker room.

Nice to see Simon's 3/4 court length shot go in. It was on ESPN's Top 10 plays of the day. How's that for exposure?

Playing 4 or 5 men out does not prevent teams from posting. We just don’t have a true big that can do that. Our best post player (Heron) is also arguably our best jump shooter. The obvious answer is to post Justin, but that hasn’t happened—although he did get a beautiful cut for a layup on a great feed from Figgy.

As for contact, you want it to be with your lower body and not chest or outstretched arms. Every coach teaches this.

Wright has been fortunate enough to pick smart and skilled kids with physical talent while most coaches have to choose either or. The smart/skilled kids pick learn faster and execute better. Trimble understands this better than anyone we have, but he can get carried away with it sometimes and use his chest which is a whistle.

As prior poster said, you want to go for the ball from underneath with your hand because coming down with your hand is almost always a whistle even if it’s clean. You can also get extra reach going up. You want to avoid all contact with your hand if your arm is extended.

Still basking in this victory. The garden was like a morgue in the first half and then just turned into something epic. I knew when they put the guy from the Sopranos up on the big screen that had to be a good omen!

Was also a promising sign for the future to see that we could pull that off without major production from Ponds (although he did make a couple of beautiful passes in crunch time.) Hard not to love these players, so happy for them and staff.

The biggest part of the come back tonight was when Simon was on the bench.....please leave him there, he kills us when he plays, no defense cant shoot fouls, cant shoot anything except heaves at the end of the half. PLEASE LEAVE HIM ON THE BENCH !!!!!!
Simon’s defense was borderline incredible second half.
I cringe when he has his hands on the ball but his defence was great and he stuck his nose in there on the boards. Fought hard for rebounds.

Though he played good D, Trimble is not at all sure-handed when handing the ball. Hope this improves down the stretch.

He has had one of the best turnover rates in the country. He rarely makes mistakes.

He rarely touches the ball in a situation where he can turn it over
Except yesterday top of the key early in the second half

That’s not true. He doesn’t dribble much but he’s constantly catching and passing. They’ve also started to have him post up just inside the perimeter to initiate offense through the last 3 games or so. I don’t know what the plan is there but they’ve done it a number of times.
Paul Massell mentioned how strong Trimble is and this must be a fact. Yesterday he ends up covering Paschall and keeps him so far away from the basket Vill don't get him the ball Quite often he covers players giving away four or five inches and very seldom is he taken advantage of.
His best quality is willingness to follow direction. When he is given a defensive assignment you can generally depend on him to follow it. Doesn’t seem to wander.

You could feel the excitement at the Garden way before the game started .So many of the fans were wearing St Johns paraphanalia , people were lined up to purchase hats and shirts from the vendors .The most impressive thing to me was that after the game when we were on 29th street we could still hear noise from the fans leaving the game .Things are on the uptick ( Al Mc Guire ).
