I had no idea what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised last night. I realize this was an inferior opponent but some things can’t be ignored. The ball movement was excellent. I thought shot selection was good. Even with the attack style of play, SJU didn’t turn it over that often. It was fun to watch and refreshing.
Of course a few things to worry about also are out there. This team would get a huge boost when/if Steere and Dunn become eligible. Sears was in immediate foul trouble. Against bigger/stronger teams those fouls will be needed. I thought Rutherford played a solid game. However, in this style no PG can play 35 or 40 minutes a night. Getting Dunn eligible is a must.
I still think we struggle against better teams but looks like we will have a chance to pick off some of them. Looking forward to watching this team grow.
I want to win Big East Championships, and make deep tournament runs, as much as anybody.
However, I've always felt that if we had a season where we were destined to have a bad record (and this season may very well be that - that's a reflection on the league, not on us, IMO), I would at least like to play games, with scores in the upper 70s, or in the 80s, while losing. I believe you can at least sell something to fans, and recruits, by doing that.
Most of our bad teams have tried to keep the scores in the 50s. When you're good, like Virginia, you can get away with that (although it's still not my preferred style). Nothing is worse then watching a bad offensive team try and keep the score low. Bad offensive teams should be doing what we do, which is push the pace, and try to use the halfcourt sets as least often as possible.
If nothing else, we will have that covered this year, and it will make most of the games interesting, and exciting, IMO. Looking forward to it.
