Granted its just one game against a mid-major, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I love the fast pace on offense and the aggressive defense. Obviously both will be put to the test against better more athletic competition, but it is a fun style of play that will be attractive to recruits.

The defense was aggressive out top, but the recoveries and rotations were good.

Rutherford looks better than advertised. If Dunn is eligible, all of a sudden our guard play could become a major strength.

Caraher was aggressive - he defended well and took the ball to the hoop. Maybe we were wrong to think of his as only a driveway jump shooter?

I love that Anderson got Williams some minutes at the point. He needs to be able to play both guard spots to give us some flexibility and increase his minutes.

Champaigne looks like a keeper. A good all-around game.

The big questions is down low. Roberts looks better and stronger, but I think we will have a hard time with legit front lines until Steere can play.

And having two top tier players is a luxury that few teams can claim. Heron and Figgy are very good and they seem like leaders for the younger guys - I think both will have big years. I'm going to sit back and enjoy this team and get to used to Mike Anderson basketball.

Thoroughly enjoyed last night. Regarding analysis, I think most everything has been mentioned.

Needless to say, Mike Anderson has brought a breath of fresh air and I look forward to watching the program progress.

Good e-mail. Not at all directed at you but one question (completely rhetorical), why would anyone have assumed Caraher was a driveway jump shooter before seeing him play? Talk about stereotyping........

I didn't see the game but was surprised to see his line.
I liked what I saw from him in the scrimmage and figured he would be able to snag a few boards and toss in a put back or two.
Also really liked what he showed in the scrimmage. We’ll need him.
Agree with you both, he will help, last nights game was just one of those things IMO.
He looks like he can be good but just needs something positive to happen. Didn’t look happy in the exhibition after getting a quick hook nor last night when he was called back while waiting to check in.

Great effort, not much more to say. We got a break with their best player being out and we took it to them. Not a fan of the new PA announcer, his 3 point call was brutal. That’s my only criticism.
besides the awful crowd showing, this was my other major problem...WTF was that?!?! I heard him do it the first time and I was like what the hell....guys behind me also didn't like it and then he kept doing it. Where did that come from? he has never announced a 3 like that....HATE IT
Almost like he was trying to create SJ’s version of “sooey!”

Marketing free games to students needs a facelift. Need barkers to flush them out of the dorms. That said, a 6:30 game is a killer to working fans and season ticket holders. They have more important responsibilities than getting to such an early game. It was obvious that the stands didn't begin filling up until after 7 PM. It was a perfect opportunity to get all the local kiddie teams and their parents to the game with freebie promotions. Get vets, cops and firefighters there for free or discounted for games like these. Just seems more can be done in preseason games to support the team with people in the stands.

Very pleased w the game. Coaching, player development, team play, discipline and conditioning, what a novel idea.:) Earlington and Roberts were unbelievable relative to last year. Also like the idea that we were looking for easy baskets.Rutherford also looked very good. Entertaining team like CMA promised.

Liked the way the team played last night so much I am watching it again right now.

The passing off rebounds and the speed getting the ball out after made baskets is something else. I assume practices are a track meet. I would venture to guess that lots of drills were run perfecting the outlet pass. It must have worked because most of the passes were on the money. I imagine teams will game plan for us by trying to disrupt the outlet passes. Mercer did not seem prepared for what they saw. I also noticed some of the SJU players huffing and puffing. And they are in great shape. We will give deliberate teams fits.

IMO, the key to getting students to CA games I’d to have activities/events to bridge the time between the end of classes and game time. If commuter students leave campus, they are not returning. Resident students also need something to get them to leave the dorms and go to the game.

As noted on the assumption of Caraher not hitting the 3's and thus being a "disappointment". A look at his one year at Houston Baptist as a freshman has him as leading scorer, playing 31 minutes a game. Overall he shot 46% but this was a result of his shooting 50% inside the line and 36% from 3 PT range, less than Mustapha and LJ last year. Ergo, his game does not show that his is a 3PT gunner, but judiciously chooses his shots. Give him a chance and don't expect him to do that which is not the primary part of his game.
Also, looking forward to Steere's eligibility and to see if he and David have on court chemistry from their high school/AAU days as teammates.

I thought Sears looked good in exhibition against Queens and can give us some good defense and rebounding inside. I'd take his quick 5 fouls last night as just one of those things unless it's proven otherwise by subsequent games. He made one very nice block that I thought was a tough foul call. Looking to see him bounce back Saturday and get some productive minutes.

Caraher was pretty much a power forward at Houston Baptist. He has long arms and can score inside. He can also make shots but he isn’t a shooter just because he’s white. Agree it is a stereotype. Kid is a versatile player and will help us a bunch off the bench. Let’s remember he came from a significant level below Mercer college and had 12/8 on them so he can hang. He won’t be a starter but in this system he will be valuable for our depth at the forward spots.

Those expecting Caraher to be a 3 point specialist may be doing some racial stereotyping...

Can he hit 80 percent of his free throws though?
Thanks for enlightening us Was under the belief he was a 3point specialist
Thanks for the surprisingly coherent and rare on topic post

If I am high on that list you don't read too many people's posts
Ok John Wooden thanks for lesson on sports
And again if there were a baseball forum when I was in college and I did something on the field that looked ridiculous I would have been fine with people joking about it
Just to clarify your position:
Criticizing 18-22 year old young men for their past play = Acceptable
Criticizing former coaches/grown men who were grossly overpaid to under perform = Unacceptable.

Nope
Joking about a jump shot that hits the side of the backboard with a 120 mph exit velo during or after the game is just commenting on something that just happened.
Posting over and over that the greatest player in school history should "quit" is a bit tedious. And he is gone now so what is the point?
When Earlington leaves I am not going to blame the next kid poor shot selection or incredible exit velo on his shot on Earlington's past shots.
Mase jr was one of my least favorite players. How about I just blame him for everything would that make you feel better?

"...Shot every time touched ball last year. Some of his threes were comical what with the exit velo and all..."

Nope... and that's a horrible straw man argument on your part.

You've clearly stated that in your opinion its NOT acceptable behavior to discuss last years staff on this site, yet you are fine discussing last years production from a player. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of what you are saying and what you are doing. I'm not assigning blame.

If you really want to be consistent, and still hold the absurd position that we shouldn't discuss previous staff's, their results, or how they compare to the current staff, then you should feel the same way about players. However, if you want to remain a complete hypocrite on the subject, then please carry on...

I wouldn't expect anything different from him.
