Didnt see the game but the one think strikes cord. Every year in years past we would hear rumors of a player blowing up in practice who wasn't one of the main stars. People like Dixon comes to mind and then I'd get my hopes up and just be disappointed.

Last year I remember Panther telling me first time he say Fig he told me watch out this kid is going to be a player. Literally he was the first one way before anyone else.

This summer hearing Caraher went from no way was he going to be able to get his shot off in the Big East to this summer he loses 20 pounds which is huge and could really grow as a role player with us. Then hearing staff LOVED Earlington work ethic and now he has gone from an afterthought to who knows what his end potential will be

Then Champagnie gaining something like 15 pounds of muscle over the summer and all the sudden he looks like a guy who can really grow over the next 4 years

None were stars recruited but it looks like they all now have serious potential to grow over their time here

To me that's the most exciting thing and really looking forward to CMA being our coach

Good start but these are games where there the opponent doesn't have a single major conference caliber player.

You play these games to pad your record and also to give your team game experience playing with each other in a coach's system.

Nice start, but CMA is still figuring out who will earn major minutes after the top guys. On this team it's wide open so it will be interesting to watch who consistently steps up and will help in the big east season.

If I were Mullin I would completely disassociate myself from the school, if he hasn't already.
You mean like he did for the 15 years before taking the job ?
Mullin has nobody but himself to blame for what anyone writes about his tenure as coach.
My biggest takeaway is that Nick Rutherford must’ve pissed in King Rice’s Cheerios last year.
Uh, Nick Rutherford last night played almost EXACTLY the same minutes he averaged last year for Monmouth. He had an excellent game last night, he had those types of games for Monmouth and Coach Rice. He is a disciplined, intelligent player, a true PG. A really good pickup by the staff regardless of the criticisms on this board when he came over.

I don’t remember all 5 of Sears fouls but two stood out as bogus. Tough for him. Would have loved for him to get more run in game like this.

I didn't see the game but was surprised to see his line.
I liked what I saw from him in the scrimmage and figured he would be able to snag a few boards and toss in a put back or two.

Last night was the first time in awhile that I really enjoyed watching the team play. I know the opponent wasn't the best but the effort was full throttle from start to finish and the game plan was noticeable. We might not win a ton this year but I have a feeling I won't be throwing any slippers at the TV this year... and that's a start :)

Also really liked what he showed in the scrimmage. We’ll need him.

Agree with you both, he will help, last nights game was just one of those things IMO.
Just back from game and only disappointment was crowd size. I guess a lot of non believers. This is an entertaining team.
Yup, i was at the game, got there 30 mins early, figured 630 pm start, late arriving after work crowd...nope...so many empty seats in the lower and upper sections, student section not full...it's the first game of the season for christ sake with a new head coach...

this was my gf's first game and even she noticed the sparse crowd, then when we got home and I turned on the Pitt v FSU game she saw the crowd in the Oakland Zoo and said "why do they have so many fans at their game" I just sighed.
Great effort, not much more to say. We got a break with their best player being out and we took it to them. Not a fan of the new PA announcer, his 3 point call was brutal. That’s my only criticism.
besides the awful crowd showing, this was my other major problem...WTF was that?!?! I heard him do it the first time and I was like what the hell....guys behind me also didn't like it and then he kept doing it. Where did that come from? he has never announced a 3 like that....HATE IT

Could not have said it better Happy. Wife: “No foul language tonight watching your Johnnies?”

Regarding the crowd, I've been to Acquista's with some administration and recommended some different approaches e.g. waiting until the end of the game to give out giveaways, incorporating more high-value things like replica jerseys to the first ___ amount of students, allowing fans to shoot around on the court before the game, winning Acquista's giftcards, etc. We discussed some good ideas, however unfortunately they were never really attempted. Also discussed having designated student representatives at MSG and CA actively scouting out the loudest fans and rewarding them with seat upgrades, theoretically all in the same area to get a Cameron Crazy vibe or at least make it look better on TV.

Going to get killed on the boards against good teams and our style will lead to getting really blown out on occasion.
With that being said is a really fun style of play. Probably most fun since Elite 8 team.
When Anderson gets some athletes and quality depth we are going to be a dangerous team.

I thought we rebounded pretty well and a ton better than Mullin teams. We seem to value rebounds more. Steere should help that as well.

I had no idea what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised last night. I realize this was an inferior opponent but some things can’t be ignored. The ball movement was excellent. I thought shot selection was good. Even with the attack style of play, SJU didn’t turn it over that often. It was fun to watch and refreshing.

Of course a few things to worry about also are out there. This team would get a huge boost when/if Steere and Dunn become eligible. Sears was in immediate foul trouble. Against bigger/stronger teams those fouls will be needed. I thought Rutherford played a solid game. However, in this style no PG can play 35 or 40 minutes a night. Getting Dunn eligible is a must.

I still think we struggle against better teams but looks like we will have a chance to pick off some of them. Looking forward to watching this team grow.

Last night's game showed what a real coaching staff can do. Roberts and Earlington could barely sniff the floor last year and even against low D1 opponents. 6 months with Coach Mike and he has turned them into contributors. i understand it is Mercer but a very promising start for them in comparison to not playing last year.

I agree my only criticism is the PA announcer. His 3 point calls were absolutely terrible. That needs to be stopped.

Maybe the 3 point announcer is a way to dissuade dumb 3's like we became so used to the past few years.:silly:
