St. John's 88, Marquette 86: Despite a rally, the Eagles ended the regular season with another collapse
NEW YORK – Another year, another collapse to end the regular season for Marquette.
The Golden Eagles put up a fight in the second half, but they fell to St. John’s, 88-86, on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York.
MU (18-12, 8-10 Big East) lost six of seven to end the regular season. The Golden Eagles also lost six of seven, including the postseason, a year ago.
The game started on the wrong foot for MU, with St. John’s scoring the first 12 points as the Golden Eagles had five turnovers over the first 3:30.
MU inserted Jamal Cain, Greg Elliott and Jayce Johnson off the bench and the Golden Eagles responded with a 12-0 run of their own.
But that was the only stretch of good play for MU in the first 20 minutes.
The pressure defense from St. John’s gave MU fits with the Golden Eagles turning the ball over 14 times in the first half.
MU’s defense couldn’t get stops and St. John’s made eight straight field goals to take a 40-24 lead.
The Red Storm’s biggest lead in the opening 20 minutes came at 47-26.
MU switched up its lineup to start the second half, with Cain, Elliott and Johnson in place of Koby McEwen, Brendan Bailey and Theo John.
The Golden Eagles got the deficit down to 55-43 on a three-pointer by Sacar Anim with 15:50 left.
St. John’s hit back with a 7-0 run. But soon MU scored seven unanswered to get within 64-52 with 12:20 left.
The Golden Eagles finally reached a single-digit deficit at 71-62 with just under eight minutes left.
A three-pointer from Markus Howard made it 74-67, but St. John’s guard Nick Rutherford answered with a three-point play.
MU would get within 77-71, but Howard missed a shot and Anim turned the ball over. A few minutes later, Howard hit a three to make it 78-74.
A layup from Howard made in 83-80, but St. John’s made back-to-back layups.
A three-point play from Anim made it 88-86 with 44 seconds left. MU got a stop, but Howard turned the ball over and the Golden Eagles’ hopes ended.
