(POST GAME) Marquette, Sat., Mar. 7, Noon, NY 9 & FSN / 970AM

Last offensive possession up 2 why is Rutherford going one on one (not his game) and hoisting up a long 3 when a 2 point basket ices the game? Gave up 60 points in second half and never changed up defense.

St. John's closes regular season with two wins in three games. NIT remains very possible after holding off Marquette. Young players continue to grow. Greg Williams Jr. and Julian Champagne were really good

In light of the publicity about playing less games at the Garden , what was the Attendance today ? Allowing for a 12 noon start , Corona Virus, etc .

What a great way for Rutherford to close out his senior season. 3 Rebounds 5 Assists 19 points

Rutherford final year is special, whatever happens in post season.

Was convinced they were going to blow it the entire second half. SOOOOO HAPPY TO BE WRONG !!!

Rutherod aside from the missed ft's excellent game and Champ oh man what a heady play with that knock away at the end. What a player he is going to be for us

Champagnie and Williams certainly playing like the future! Great stuff! I also think it’s wonderful that Mike Anderson kept his zero losing season streak alive. It’s a big thing for him and a rare stay. We aren’t done playing yet and are playing decent ball now. Let’s take it to Georgetown at our home and keep winning.
If we lost to Gtown and then in the NIT wouldn't he finish 16-17? Let's get a W against Gtown and make it a sure .500 season
Yeah good point. I wasn’t factoring in potential post-season play. The simple fact that we are even talking about post-season play is amazing.

Agree 100%! At one point I yelled out “I hate that freaking floater!” Got a lot of nods of agreement from people sitting around me.

From where I was sitting, looked like a little less than half full.

I came here to post about Julian Champagnie, Greg Williams and the Duke. Of course I agree with what almost everyone has already said. The development of these kids is really the most important takeaway.

For some teams or in a different year for us the NIT usually means nothing. This time with these guys emerging as legitimate players, the extra games and playing time might actually be very beneficial. Let’s win a game or two in the BE Tourney so hopefully we can sneak into the NIT.

Wow. Lower than I thought.

I wasn’t able to attend or watch today’s game but being anything but happy about a win today is odd to me. CMA coached up a team with such little experience. What he did without Heron our best and far most experienced player having much impact was extraordinary. Champagnie is a Freshman, Dunn and Rutherford have experience but it is mostly at a very low Division 1 level. The only disappointment might be Figueroa who never adapted consistently to his role change. Of course we lost some close games at home and some were really difficult to watch but I think that was more a function of our talent or lack of then anything CMA did. Many coaches would never even been able to coach this team to leads. Georgetown is not going to be an easy game but it would be great to get a win. I agree with NC Johnnie that we need that one for an NIT bid. Big game Wednesday night.

Didn’t somebody on JJ say Champagnie was only a mid major player. Thank God Van Macon was not listening to him. Lol

I don’t think Wojo feels that way at this moment.

Champ is future all Big East player

St. John's 88, Marquette 86: Despite a rally, the Eagles ended the regular season with another collapse

NEW YORK – Another year, another collapse to end the regular season for Marquette.
The Golden Eagles put up a fight in the second half, but they fell to St. John’s, 88-86, on Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York.
MU (18-12, 8-10 Big East) lost six of seven to end the regular season. The Golden Eagles also lost six of seven, including the postseason, a year ago.
The game started on the wrong foot for MU, with St. John’s scoring the first 12 points as the Golden Eagles had five turnovers over the first 3:30.
MU inserted Jamal Cain, Greg Elliott and Jayce Johnson off the bench and the Golden Eagles responded with a 12-0 run of their own.
But that was the only stretch of good play for MU in the first 20 minutes.
The pressure defense from St. John’s gave MU fits with the Golden Eagles turning the ball over 14 times in the first half.

MU’s defense couldn’t get stops and St. John’s made eight straight field goals to take a 40-24 lead.
The Red Storm’s biggest lead in the opening 20 minutes came at 47-26.
MU switched up its lineup to start the second half, with Cain, Elliott and Johnson in place of Koby McEwen, Brendan Bailey and Theo John.
The Golden Eagles got the deficit down to 55-43 on a three-pointer by Sacar Anim with 15:50 left.

St. John’s hit back with a 7-0 run. But soon MU scored seven unanswered to get within 64-52 with 12:20 left.
The Golden Eagles finally reached a single-digit deficit at 71-62 with just under eight minutes left.

A three-pointer from Markus Howard made it 74-67, but St. John’s guard Nick Rutherford answered with a three-point play.
MU would get within 77-71, but Howard missed a shot and Anim turned the ball over. A few minutes later, Howard hit a three to make it 78-74.
A layup from Howard made in 83-80, but St. John’s made back-to-back layups.
A three-point play from Anim made it 88-86 with 44 seconds left. MU got a stop, but Howard turned the ball over and the Golden Eagles’ hopes ended.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wojo out after this season. Their fan base isn’t very happy with him.

I'd like to see all of Champ, Greg, Earlington, Dunn, Roberts & yes Caraher back next year. Those 6 plus 5 new guys (counting McGriff) gives us a lot to look forward to. Let's add at least 1 (hopefully 2) real big(s) to that mix. With improved three point shooting of Williams & Champ to go with Cole, I see big(s) as our real open need.

He’s been solid but I don’t feel that his teams are tough like Wojo was when he played. His teams for some reason end up being finesse teams a bit too much. Not sure what that’s all about.

Probably not a barometer of assessing the future for us and MSG for a lot of reasons . Also too, there have been a couple of Sunday games at MSG which probably doesn’t help either . I would think if the team is ever a legitimate BE contender , attendance would double or more . The Virus factor may have also been a impediment .

Plus 4 of 9 from FT line...don’t see that we take a step back if he decides to leave...CMA has created a next man up culture and we have competed, outside of 2-3 games, in spite of LJ. Kudos to the kids...Don’t think I have ever been this optimistic after a 16-15 season.

Only issue I have is late game strategy and execution. Under no circumstance should Rutherford be dribbling down the clock in a tight game
