(POST-GAME) @Duke, Sat. Feb. 2, Noon, ESPN / 570AM

We played a team that started five first round NBA picks, on their home court. We might have a couple of second round picks. Those teams Fran recruited had first round picks, so we were very competitive with Duke then.
We beat them last year!
Not the same Duke team
True, different players, but Duke came into that game at 19-3 and ranked 9th in the nation. We were 10-13, and 0-11 in the Big East with an 11 game losing streak. We were a very different team too. Actually, a lot worse.

Duke did not have a player last year as dominant as Zion on their team. They had Bagley and Carter but those guys are nowhere near as dominant as Zion.

This Duke squad is also much better defensively than last year’s version.

We switch every game on the opposition's guards driving to the basket and get burnt by their easy handoffs that result in dunks, yet we don't see Ponds or Heron doing that instead they often get stuffed.

And their best player (Bagley) was in foul trouble and on the bench for most of the game.

Was at the watch party in Bayside which was very well run. Had a good time in that regard. We played with them for 1 half and then they just made seemingly 80% and it felt like we went forever without scoring. Believe they went on a 30-3 run and that was all she wrote. We have no answer for dominant bigs who know how to finish. I figured we'd lose, but not by 30. We shot as bad as we possibly could in the 2nd. That's what happens when you play some of your worst against clearly the best team in the nation by far. You lose by 30. Surprised they didn't put 100 on us honestly. I can't stand Duke fans...90% are front runners and they act like they have it bad when they make the Sweet 16 then lose.

Ponds looked completely lost. He was just shown what playing in the NBA will be like at a minimum and he failed the test badly. Can't see Ponds drafted after being exposed that badly. Sick and tired of seeing Zion's stupid dunk clips...most aren't even that impressive honestly. Last year it was Trae Young and now we will hear about every breath Zion takes with Dickie V screaming OMG! HE TOOK A BREATH BABY! WOW!

We need to take care of our home court. Otherwise we are in very poor position. This game was meaningless but we played awful no matter the team.
Last year no one hammered Ponds when he put up 33 against Duke at the Garden. Today he had a bad game but I don't believe that his entire professional career was riding on this one outing. He will be judged by scouts on his entire body of work.

Duke's game plan was focused on shutting him down. Jones played great defense on him, no doubt, but they also doubled and tripled Ponds every time he had the ball and also closed off the passing lanes. They played great defense on him and that had as much to with his poor effort as anything.

FYI Kentucky was blown out by Duke just as badly as we were and no one is saying their players NBA hopes are done. Chalk it up for what it was, a good old fashioned butt kicking. It happens!

On to Marquetts and trying to finish in the top three in the conference and bigger things beyond.
Jones shut Ponds down by himself--and badly. He was too quick for Ponds. I don't think Ponds was doubled and tripled like you claim. They went for steals when he turned his back and converged when he drove. That's pretty standard.

Nobody said the UK guys weren't NBA players because they are just freshmen and their physical talent is undeniable. Ponds is only 6'0/6'1 with short arms and only average athletic ability. His BADLY missed dunk at the exemplifies what this game meant to scouts, and it's one of those unfair plays that come to define a player's shortcomings to scouts and GMs who have to evaluate hundreds of players a year. He is second to none in skill. I feel bad for him, by this is a pattern. Look at how he faired against Khyri last year and how he faked against McKnight this year.

I think he believed he could just turn it on today...I thought he could too.

The biggest difference between this year, and last year, was MSG vs. Cameron Indoor.

Yes, I know that Duke brings a lot of fans to MSG, but it's not the same.

So maybe we lose by 20 @MSG?

Duke got the top three players coming out of high school last year, are ranked #2, had a far more experienced coaching staff and were on their own court. I felt we could cover the 17.5 spread, but I never thought we could win.

Zion is a freak. The kid is going #1 in the draft. Yes, his head is rim level when he jams.
There is not much you could do. Bad match-up. I think Zion and any 3 on his team could beat us 4 on 5. They had size and speed and strength at every position. Problem for rest of season is Simon's complete lack of confidence in his shot. From anywhere. His handle is gone too. As a coach, what can you do. You need him for other reasons. Very big disadvantage to have a guard that can't make a basket beyond an uncontested dunk. He is given open looks, and it takes away from his drives which everyone overplays.
Remember if Ponds is our point guard then Simon is the shooting guard. God help us!

I also think we forgot to mention, they have won for 19 straight years at home but the way we lost hurts.....

To be fair, that's against non ACC opponents. We are the last team to beat them, Bootsy!

Boards is there any chance he changes his mind about maybe coming back for his senior year? Probably not
Probably not. He sees himself as a pro. He will play in the G League if necessary.
How does that make any sense. The G League will still be available to him after his SR year, no?
He’s made it pretty clear he doesn’t wanna go to school anymore and wants to make money playing ball. He’s as good as gone
Thank you. Obviously Drama can’t comprehend this.

I won't dispute anybody's perceptions of what they saw out there. I totally agree with you that Jones was very very tough on Ponds defensively, but what I also saw was that multiple players were converging on Ponds to get the ball out of his hands as quickly as possible. This seemed to be their game plan and it worked well. I don't believe I was the only one who saw this, because Tarik Turner made the same point on the post-game radio broadcast. That said Ponds did not adjust well to their strategy or Jones superior defense.

However while it was a national TV game, winning against Marquette is probably more important. A sweep against a Top fifteen team would go a long way to us getting to the tournament.

BTW Justin Simon totally shut down Markus Howard the last time we played Marquette, but that has not stopped Hioward from bouncing back. I am hoping Ponds does the same Tuesday.

We lose to Duke by 30 score @ 60 points . NC St loses to VT by 23 and scores 24 pointsin the whole game .

The scouts have seen Ponds plenty. They already know his game. Among other things, he has been the leader since he was a freshman and has been part of big losing streaks and late game disasters. Another knock is that and he is just a so so shooter. He can do magic at times but is undersized and prone to injury and consistency issues. NBA dream was probably just that before this game, but this may have just confirmed what was already known.

After 4 yrs we should have had size ,speed and strength at all position, maybe not at the talent level of DUKE BUT WE SHOULD HAVE HAD A DECENT CENTER which would have helped since we got killed on the boards coached saw what was going on with ponds and did not correct it immediately guess there are a bunch of this we can look at and done better bottom line it was just a much better team. What I did not expect was how PONDS did so poorly. Think most people would say he is not ready for the NBA ,maybe he and Heron should come back next yr that would throw a monkey wrench into our recruiting
