(POST-GAME) @Duke, Sat. Feb. 2, Noon, ESPN / 570AM
played decent for 15 minutes then complete and total mental collapse and shots stopped falling. Didn't expect a win and I don't care about Ponds lack of scoring if he is controlling the game but the lack of poise from our starting 5 was unexpected.
There was no way we were going to win this game because we know our team and they have to play a perfect game with all 5 starters to have a chance against superior players.
Two players influenced the game. Zion and Ponds. He could have scored 40 if Duke went to him more.
Ponds was outplayed by a freshman Tre Jones. He tried to play schoolyard 1 on 1 with him and it was like an Ali rope a dope strategy by Jones and Duke. Ponds fell for it every possession. He proved he could never be a lead guard in the NBA. Period.
Finally, the result had nothing to do with coaching and all to do with talent. When one or two of our starting 5 can't compete we become a mid major team talent wise. Thus a 30 point blow out with Duke emptying its bench.

Boards is there any chance he changes his mind about maybe coming back for his senior year? Probably not
Definitive nope
If his back can't hold up in B.E. play, how will it hold up in the NBA?
It is not about what’s right, it is about what the player and family think is best decision. Also, if a kid wants to earn some money somewhere, that most often trumps the unknown of returning. Staff don’t expect either he or Heron back is my impression.
Unless you're projected as a definite 1st round pick, what is the benefit of leaving as a JR? Doesn't make sense to me.

He is allowed to hire an agent, give it his all at the combine (if invited), and return to school if he goes undrafted (if he was invited to the combine).

After today he will not be picked. He just got OWNED by a late first round/early second round freshman with less than 20 games of college experience as a junior. He got owned by McKinght of SH. For kids like him and Heron, the NBA wants finished products.

The answer at this point is clear, but we know better than most fans that what a kid should do and what a kid actually does are two very different things.

I love Clark but he has to be one of the dumbest defenders ever. How does he not know that his fouls are far more important than any layup? When he's out we can't beat many teams.

His 4th foul was just ridiculous. The man had the ball inches from the basket, completely squared up and ready to dunk. Clark had a full second to think about while timing the potential block and still went for it.

Same can be said for Ponds calling TOs to avoid a jump ball at the point in the game where he did.

Dukie V said it best Shamorie had an opportunity to impress scouts today being a 6 foot player and i think he failed, great college player, but he's not a pro.

Do you know that the other players told Ponds to cut out the childish dribbling and not the coaches?
I was hoping even if it took into the second half that perhaps it was the coaches...one of which had woken to see it.

If it’s possible to play yourself out of the draft in one game Ponds did it today. What a brutal game in every aspect. Looked completely overmatched and made Jones look like the worlds greatest ever defender. On the bright side he should consider playing his senior season

It's a shame because had he played more cerebral this year it may have helped him but he is just not an instinctive leader on the court. Tendency is to go 1 on 1 and that kills team ball. No longer BE player of the year candidate imo.

Felipe was the #1 recruit in the nation and stayed 4 years and made the NBA. Pretty sure he didn't expect to stick around that long.
We played a team that started five first round NBA picks, on their home court. We might have a couple of second round picks. Those teams Fran recruited had first round picks, so we were very competitive with Duke then.
We beat them last year!

Men over boys today. Won't be watching the replay.
It took Mullin a whole half to have Simon bring up the ball -brilliant.
Started the first half passing and cutting followed in the second half with three pointers.
Our low post defense was horrible, lack of boxing out led to easy dunks.
Outrebounded 48 to 30.
Thought Keita should have played more in the second half, didn't see playing time until there was eight minutes remaining.
Talk about regression. Where has Simon gone?
Clark is obviously playing out of position guarding the opposition's big man but he continues to commit stupid fouls.
I believe this blowout will motivate us against Marquette. .

For a kid Ponds size he has to show NBA scouts that he can either score like a guy like Allen Iverson or manage a game and be a lead guard in the manner of a Chris Paul. He did neither today. He didn’t even come close. I’m very surprised actually. I thought Ponds would be the least of our problems today and he turned out to be our main problem. Amazing!

Not the same Duke team

Players with Ponds position in the upcoming draft, mid second round at best almost always drop out of the following years draft because they very seldom improve their skills in their senior year.
Because of his size he is probably headed to Europe and should consider making money overseas or another year at SJU.
He probably has people telling him he is guaranteed to make an NBA roster so he will roll the dice. Heron will also have to decide between Europe and SJU. I don't think either would be interested in the G league.

Last year no one hammered Ponds when he put up 33 against Duke at the Garden. Today he had a bad game but I don't believe that his entire professional career was riding on this one outing. He will be judged by scouts on his entire body of work.

Duke's game plan was focused on shutting him down. Jones played great defense on him, no doubt, but they also doubled and tripled Ponds every time he had the ball and also closed off the passing lanes. They played great defense on him and that had as much to with his poor effort as anything.

FYI Kentucky was blown out by Duke just as badly as we were and no one is saying their players NBA hopes are done. Chalk it up for what it was, a good old fashioned butt kicking. It happens!

On to Marquetts and trying to finish in the top three in the conference and bigger things beyond.

It doesn't make sense. The G league is not the way to go.

The base salary of g league players is $35,000. Two-way players make $77,000 base with more for time spent on NBA rosters.

The probkem is the league is full of former first and second round picks. Nick Johnson, the 2014 2nd round round pick from Arizona is 50th in the league in scoring.

#94 in former #1 overall pick Anthony Bennett. #92 is Billy Garrett from DePaul.

Ponds was embarrassed by a freshmen who is an exceptional defender, however Mullin should not have waited until the second half to have Simon bring up the ball..

Didn't expect a win but was hoping we could at least hang around on national TV, we got ranked then lost 4 of 5, had a chance to show the world we could play and failed at both. im a a die hard fan like you all and just hurt when we had a chance to be relevant AGAIN! Was hoping for the best this year, but no NCAA's and it could be long time before we get the chance again.........
