Who would have thought a month ago that most on this board would be hoping Wheeler can come back for another year?
Anderson appears to have the old school mentality of the bench being a great motivator for a guy to play well (personally, I think it's a motivation for guys to transfer).  Early in the year, Wheeler make one or two mistakes (of aggression), and coach would pull him.

With Wheeler, that might not have been the wisest course of action.  Some guys just have to play through their mistakes.

On the radio (streaming) postgame, Cleveland did not sound confidant about Posh, at least in the short term.  If he's gone long-term, it's a shame, because we just had our best character win on the year.  As much as I feel the UCONN loss demoralized this team, winning this game the way we did could have the opposite effect, although with two good teams coming into MSG, it's going to be tough, even with this team starting to grow up.
If gillispe is out, sit posh regardless.  Nova has no bench and we should beat them easily w/o gillispie.

Next practice... please attempt some 3-pointers as well. Thanks.
How about some time on defending against them?

A road win at Hinkle worth of praise especially down stretch without Posh. well done guys & staff. On latter give MA credit for game plan of driving ball, positioning JC down low & drawing fouls in process
Excellent point re:strategy. Valuing high % 2 point shots is critical when 3s not going down. Add to your points, the decision to go zone which cut down on the wide open (and I mean wide open) 3s that they were getting.

That might be nice too.  Though, I don't want to be greedy.

Coach did some good coaching today both offensively (whole game) and defensively going to the zone in the 2nd half. Credit where credit is due.
A win Tuesday against Nova in the Garden would be beyond huge.

Really applaud Soriano for how he’s developing
Very important. If he continues to develop, staff can leverage in recruiting efforts for other bigs - an area of recruiting where we always struggled.

I thought it was Coburn's best all-around game.  Took the right shots, played better defensively, moved the ball really well.

Glad everyone loves Wheeler now (especially Monte, of course). Have yet to see anyone give Anderson any credit for having patience and bringing him along until he was ready to be a contributor, and then expanding his role from there.

There are a lot of pieces to coaching. I have my issues with some aspects of Anderson's coaching toolkit, but when you look at the development of Champ, Posh, Wusu, now Wheeler, the slowly increasing use of Coburn you can certainly see where some of his strengths lie.

And Soriano who has now hit his last 12 shots.

He did, except Anderson should have threatened any player who takes a three without getting the ball inside first would be running suicides until the plane leaves.

Agree with both of these points.  This was CMA's best game of the season.

Damn, I really hope Posh can play as Nova will be vulnerable without Gillespie.  Obviously don’t want to do anything to jeopardize the long term health of Posh so staff needs to be conservative.  Not a good sign that he couldn’t finish the game out down the stretch.  Hopefully at worst, this keeps him out a game or two.

So is Anderson a good coach now or should we still be looking to move on? Does our team still suck, or do they have the ability to go on a little bit of a run? Do our players have Big East level talent or not? I understand that sports are a very reactionary business, so I am just trying to figure out the consensus of this board.

Yes, this was a welcomed, gritty win and I would never sneeze at a conference road win.  But, there is still a lot to work on.  I did not think we played well enough to beat any Big East team currently over .500 in conference.

I’m still very disappointed with the season to date, but am pleased that we appear to be playing better.  I think it is extremely unlikely we make the tournament this year which for me is the definition of success.

With the exception of a frustrated outburst during the Providence game, I’ve consistently been in the camp that Anderson should be given one more year after this to make the tournament.

As one who bitches constantly about SJ poor BE road record every year, they have three now w nods over SH, GT & Butler. Let’s build on that

Why even go in this direction. As you mentioned, sports are reactionary, that is why “hot takes” are so popular.

But since you did ask, here is my not-ao-reactionary opinion. The team’s record should be better, and it still has a hill to climb to get in the NCAA tournament. That falls on the coach. I will wait until after the season to judge if he deserves to come back, and that depends on making the NCAA tournament. Just get in.

You could see in the replay that he rolled that ankle. I don't think that he's going to be ready for the Nova game. We just have to figure out a way to win without him. I think that this situation will fill the team with some resolve and other players will step up.
My starting lineup without Posh would be Champ, Wheel, Soriano, Coburn and Stanly. Let Stanley distribute the ball but not shoot. Get it to the bigger guys and let them put it in. Stay with our strength. At least Stanley can take care of the ball most of the time

One of my favorite John Wooden quotes is "timeouts are a sign of weakness".

Without those 2 timeouts to spare at the end, we probably would be crying now.
However not calling a TO up 3 and the ball with less than a minute left, could have avoided Wusu to continue to dribble in traffic and coughing it up. The whole possession had a bad look from the start. You’ve two TO’s in your pocket. Use one to get your team composed.

As far as I'm concerned, Wusu didn't lose composure.   He just made a bonehead decision to try to dribble through 3 defenders at the foul line.    He made a preprogrammed decision to split those 3 guys for a layup.    To me, that's where instinct comes in and not so much coaching.   I'm sure they will work on this in practice.

St. John's leader in plus/minus? Tareq Coburn. Plus-11 in 10 minutes. Hit two massive free throws late. #sjubb

Does spread the floor as perimeter threat
Mathis should be coming off the bench giving us 10 minutes a game.  Coburn should be starting and giving is 25 minutes a game.
Anderson's biggest weakness, and I've said it before, is that he is in love with defense, a little too much (maybe a lot too much).

Mathis can defend, plays all out, and is a hard worker.  It shows when he's on the court.  However, he has very little, if any, offensive skill set.  Coburn is obviously a hard worker too (especially off the court), but he's not nearly as good as Mathis defensively.

Same with Wusu getting significant minutes, since he is constantly on the move (he's a bit better offensively, though he should never be handling the ball).

Coach obviously likes to set the tone with defense, which is understandable.  IMO however, he has tried to do that too much at the expense of the offense this year.

Maybe he's starting to get it, but most of us were on this a month ago, if not back in December.  I hope it's not too late.  Of course, if Posh is out for any length of time, it might not matter.
