Possible Coaching Candidates

In Today’s post Zach wrote big article on Claxton. Next to a small blurb about ST John’s game from AP
Speedy's sister played basketball for St. John's but that's where the connection ends.
He loves Hofstra. He even donated big bucks to build the arena where he now coaches. He's a wealthy multimillionaire and salary is just an ego factor just as it is with Rick Pitino.
I have no doubt St. John's will have him on their radar along a very short list of candidates, all of whom are current D1 coaches.
I doubt we will know much until the NCAA tournament is close to over and players place their names in the transfer portal.
It's going to be a very interesting April Fools Day!

CMA's track record pre-SJU --which was only 4 years ago!--was solid. Three NCAA Tourney appearances in the 5 years immediately preceding his time here. We would have killed for that. He was Big East COY 2 years ago. I just don't believe his ability to succeed has somehow evaporated.
Good track record? Apparently the administration at Arkansas didn’t think so and with their success since then did the right thing by firing him. Unfortunately St. John’s took the “never had a losing season” bait and brought him in and fell for all the BS he spewed like his 40 minutes of hell mantra and how he was going to take the team to a National Championship level.

I imagine you believe that CMA has used these last 4 years as a foundational building block for what's in store for year 5. He's just waiting to unleash his true coaching genius which he obviously could not have exposed in his first 4 years...
He was Big East Coach of the Year in 2021.

Persistence redfazed. I give you that.

I liked the coach Anderson hire. But open your eyes a bit more. Barring a big east tourney championship. It’s time to move on. It’s ok to admit failure. He wanted ncaa championships upon being hired. An ncaa tourney appearance isn’t even happening. It’s time to move on and it’s ok for you to admit and agree with it.

The Arena was completed in January, 2000, during Speedy's senior year of Hofstra. Speedy played for me in AAU so I was at his Senior Day in the new Arena.
Yes, you are correct. I misspoke because my close friend who has had Hofstra season tickets for years always used to call the Hofstra Arena(Mack) "the house that Speedy built". It is almost ingrained in my head.
BTW, I follow Molloy track and field because a nephew runs there and I saw you at a meet last year cheering on your granddaughter B. I haven't see you this year nor B.
Hope all is well.
As for Speedy, he's a very reserved coach on the sidelines and involves his assistants well during games.
One day you can share with us how a St. John's man let his star AAU guard go to Hofstra and make Jay Wright the celebrity coach he became. If not for Speedy, Wright never goes to Villanova!!!!!

Appreciate your inquiring about my granddaughter. She fractured two bones in her right ankle during cross country practice in September. She just started running again last week. Hopefully she will be ready for Outdoor season.

Fran expressed interest in Speedy, but never offered him a scholarship. Fran was hoping to get Shaheen Holloway. Speedy's Mom saw Fran on television at the McDonalds All American game chasing after Shaheen. The family realized that Speedy was not a priority for Fran and contacted Joe Jones who was the lead recruiter for Speedy and committed to Hofstra. The rest is history.

They call the Arena "The House That Speedy Built" because Speedy is responsible for reviving a once dormant program. He generated interest which lead to more funding.

He was COY in a season where the Big East was the weakest it’s ever been and the amount of disruptions to team play due to COVID were many. St. John’s finished 4th in conference and still didn’t get a Dance invite. When was the last time a 4th place finish in the BE didn’t get an invite? So to judge a COY on that sample was just asinine. Add to that about 9 players left the team and one has to wonder what Cragg was thinking (if at all) when he game CMA an extension.

Everyone seems to be assuming that CMA is, to coin a phrase, "irredeemable" at this point. I'm not so sure. I am, on the other hand, 99.9% sure that his buyout will cause the admin to go with a mid-major "up and comer" whom the odds say will not ultimately materialize into a successful high-major coach - and in any event, will involve another lengthy rebuild. I'll take my chances with one more year of CMA.
If we ain’t hiring a slam dunk I agree we should stay with CMA. There are worse coaches than him to have. But I’ll say it again had we not run Lavin out of town we would be competitive every year.
